Sage Educators was a fantastic organization to use for our teen at their in person offices before covid, and we continue to successfully use their services on line through zoom during isolation! Their employees are fantastic and we trust that this family run, local marin owned biz has done their due diligence regarding background checks and hiring the best tutors in the business. I was desperate for an algebra tutor & was referred to Sage Educators by a friend. I contacted Sage and connected with Madison who offered everything I needed - someone familiar with the curriculum at Tam, that could access the teachers website to see what was being taught, and could work with my daughter twice a week to help her catch up. I really appreciated the feedback I received after each tutoring session; whether my daughter came prepared, what they worked on, if she was able to grasp the concepts, what she still needed to complete at home, etc. My daughter has been resistant to help from teachers outside of class, of peer tutors, tutors for hire, but really connected with Madison who was always positive and able to tackle math from different perspectives in order to explain it to my daughter in a way she could comprehend. Sage was able to accommodate us when we needed to re-schedule due to illness or other conflicts. We've had two great experiences with Sage. The first occurred a few years ago when my son was 8 years old and his teacher said his reading comprehension skills were under par. The teacher was concerned that there was an underlying issue. We took our son to Sage and after a few assessments, we learned that he was right on track. Sage didn't push us into additional testing or tutoring and gave us tips for improving our son's reading comprehension from home. Recently our 8th grade daughter has worked with Noel for 1:1 SSAT prep. Noel has tailored the tutoring to our daughter's needs and has really improved her confidence. Two words that are now uttered with absolute adoration in our house: STORM GLOVER. Our daughter, Madeline Tara, is a wonderfully dedicated freshman at Marin Catholic high school and takes her academics very seriously. When she came to me before her final exam, and said - "Mom...I feel I am not grasping algebra the way I should be...I'm scared....", I said, "Sweetheart, you're a talented artistic girl who thinks in rainbow hues...all we need is to find someone who can interpret math for you in your language..." As soon as I saw Storm, I knew he was the one. Looking more like a Renaissance poet - than a math genius (he's an absolute math genius extraordinaire) he ushered Madeline into his study room with a warm smile. Maddie came home from her very first tutoring session aglow; "I get it Mom....it's making sense..." she said, eyes sparkling. Only very special teachers can do this. I know, I'm a writer, my forté is spinning saucy sentences...but add numbers? Gulp; where's my calculator. We went into the algebra final with strength, aprés several Storm sessions... (love the metaphor there) and Maddie felt good. Well - we got an A. On the final. Yep. Nailed it...like an outta the ballpark Babe Ruth home run. Really really poor instruction. Paid for my son to take a writing class but the instructor did not read one of his papers because she did not want to embarrass him. Am I paying for a therapist or writing instruction?? This is a tutoring service. Expect that the kids taking the class require help. By analogy, isn't this like taking a driving class where you learn the rules of the road, but don't ever get behind the wheel to be critiqued? Complained to the management that I wanted a full or even partial refund but she was inflexible. Only remedy she offered was to review my son's paper after I complained. Inadequate restitution. I find this remedy insulting and myopic because this is the course of action that should've been taken in the first place and an admission that they failed and dropped the ball. Scary....if this is a SAT prep center, hate to know how they prepare their clientele, "Oh yeah, we forgot...." There are better places. Stay Away. read more

This was a while back, but my child took SAT tutoring here. They said feel free to stop by and take practice tests and they can answer questions outside of class time if they're unsure about something for free. My kid was reviewing their test and asked their teacher something about their practice test and it was either they were confused about the tutor's explanation/ the tutor took longer/ was struggling to explain it. Anyways, they ended up charging for half an hour of private tutoring for literally confusion on one question. So you can't even ask your teachers a question outside of class without being worried how long it's going to take?? Because if they had asked this in class, I doubt they would be charged. I think in the future, they should warn their students yes you can pop by and ask questions, but be warned if we feel it's taking too much of our time we will charge you for private tutoring. They didn't advertise this to us I think because it sounds stingy... since it is. The fact that they don't tell you that before and just spring that cost on you, on an already expensive test company, I felt was pretty scummy. I get that this is Marin, but it felt like we were getting nickel and dimed. For reference, my kid took a class with the Berkeley review and all the teachers were happy to arrange office hours and stay late with no extra charge because they genuinely want the students to succeed. I realize not all test companies can do that, but again, this test company/the tutors felt like they cared more about money than helping their students improve. I just want to warn people in the future so they won't be surprised if this happens to them. I would not recommend this company / return back here for tutoring, sorry. The tutoring was also mediocre and not worth the cost. read more

I must admit I was a little dubious about spending so much money for the SSAT Prep Course. It was well worth the investment. Our child worked with Keeley White at the San Anselmo location and he really enjoyed the classes. Yup - a 14 year old who looked forward to spending a couple of hours studying. Why? Because Keeley made learning fun. His SSAT score improved and so did his grades in school (bonus!). read more

Best Tutoring in Marin My son and daughter have been tutored at Sage for high school level Math classes - for both public and private school courses since 2011. Every Sage tutor knows the material, can present it in a way that makes it easy to understand and helped with preparation for tests and quizes. All the tutors are fantastic! The staff at Sage is also very helpful from finding time for additional sessions before finals, or rescheduling sessions. Each Sage representative is professional, polite and helpful. (had poor experiences with more expensive tutors who were not accommodating and down right rutde) The pricing is also reasonable. I highly recommend Sage. In his sophomore year of high school, our son asked to go to Sage. He stayed with it all the way through graduation, and the folks at Sage helped him succeed in high school and get into college. They made sure he understood his assignments, helped as needed with home work, led SAT test prep, edited his college application essays, and more. Sage is more than a tutoring program. Really great experience here! I will definitely use them again if we need to! My daughter, Sage, took their SSAT prep course and really enjoyed it. It was super organized, very structured, and they were given homework each week and quizzes each week. They went over material as well as test-taking skills. Bill was Sage's teacher and he was super nice. I got an individualized report every Sunday evening letting me know how the day's session went and what needed to be done during the week. I also had many questions which were answered promptly, thoroughly and courteously. The staff at Sage are incredibly friendly but still super efficient. No wishy-washy here! I really felt like they KNOW what they do and they know how to do it well. They start off with a diagnostic test first. Sage scored a 96 on that and was really happy but wanted to take the class anyway just in case the real test was a lot different. Her first test was Dec 13, 2014 and she unfortunately had a fever and a sore throat. She took the test anyway and managed to pull off a 94 but knew that her math score was going to be low because she said, "Mommy, my head was literally buzzing during the math section." When we got her score back, her math score was indeed the lowest but she knew she could ace the math section (one of her strongest subjects) so she wanted to take it again despite being pretty happy with her initial score. She took the second test on Jan 10 2015 (and for you private school application parents -they turn the scores around in about 5 days for this test so you don't have to worry about getting everything in on time for the 1/15 deadline) and she scored a 96 with a 97th percentile score in math. Her range for math was 754-800, I think... She probably would have score a 97 overall but that her verbal score came down just a tiny bit and I'm guessing that was because she didn't study at all for the second test (since we were happy with the first scores I think she just wanted to prove to herself that she could ace the math - conjecture on my part but I think this is true. So if you take the course be sure to sign up for a test date that corresponds with the completion of the class. Vocabulary, as with any language, goes quickly away unless practiced regularly. Her reading score was EXACTLY the same. We ended up sending the second set of scores since they got them back so quickly. A note about the test: The reading portion is way harder than the practice exams or anything they saw in class. I talked to some of the kids after the test and they all agreed that the reading section was just crazy. Really esoteric and random...One kid stumbled out of the room saying, "My GOD! I got Shakespeare and Geometry." Which I thought was hilarious because if he indeed recognized a passage as specifically Shakespeare them I'm certain he did just fine. And, the scores are scaled for gender and grade. The physical space is great - it's comfortable and very kid/teen oriented with helpful educational hints all over the place. Things like common grammar pitfalls, common math pitfalls, etc. There are small rooms separated about so it's very quiet too. The Staff all seem young and very full of energy. All-inl-all Sage (my daughter not the company) had a great experience there and we will use them again if the need arises. read more

The tutors at Sage have an amazing ability to relate to teenagers and kids. My daughter started ssat tutoring with Jaime in eighth grade. Although initially she was unsure about tutoring, after the first few sessions she was asking for more hours. She felt like the tutoring really helped her understand the ssat and learn how to handle the test, and more than that she just really connected with the tutors and felt comfortable asking them for help with all of her school work. Since then she's worked with several of the other tutors such as Bill and Maggie and did her college essay with Lindsey. Over the years, the Sage tutors gave me lots of feedback. They really seem to "get" my daughter and care about her. I don't even know how many times William stayed late at night just to help her finish a big assignment or study for a last minute test. She just graduated from high school last year and is off to college, and I feel confident knowing she is very well prepared. My son used sage for his 4 years in high school. The tutors are smart, and very connected to the high school. They have access to the individual class curriculum and where very helpful working with my son on executing his homework, studying for tests, and even supporting him in writing his college essay. The tutors develop a relationship with the kids and if there are issues they are open to switch things up. My son really relied on Sage and I thank them for helping him get through HS and into the college of his choice. The team at Sage was open to feedback and also gave feedback on my sons effort, and progress.My only feedback would be teaching study and organization skills so that by the time my son graduated he was more prepared to work independently. I'm not sure why there are negative reviews about Sage. I have never had a bad experience like carole g's. I started going here three years ago and my grades in math have improved drastically. My h.s. freshman son has been going to Sage for more than a year, and although he wouldn't choose to do it on his own, he finds it extremely helpful. He worked weekly with a tutor in 8th grade and had several one-on-one sessions over the summer as a bridge to h.s. and is now working weekly in 9th grade. It helps him stay organized and focused. He brings in a variety of school work and gets help where needed. I am able to pull material from teachers' web sites and forward to his tutor to assist in keeping my son on track. They have also begun working with him to strengthen his vocabulary, incorporating good resource material that they have on had. My daughter went to Sage in Mill Valley to prep for her SAT's. I always picked her up with great anticipation of learning how she did that day. For instance, did she learn test taking techniques? Did her incorrect answers get explained? Did she feel like she received what she needed to get to the next level of testing? The answer for all of the above was basically NO. Perhaps it was that most of the kids were from Tam and not Redwood High. I wasn't there so I can only go on her word. However, when I got her a private tutor in the areas where she was lacking, she improved 100 fold. My advice is to spend your money wisely and selectively. I have been "partnering" with Sage for the last 3 years to help support my son, a Redwood senior, with math -- which has always been a struggle. I credit his Sage tutors with helping to identify the areas where he needed to focus the most, and working to build his confidence. With their help, he has learned how to work through the challenges that his various math classes have presented. His current tutor, Lissa has been a true partner, not only in working with my son, but in keeping me posted on his progress. She has gone above and beyond in her suggestions, and proactive scheduling and I have appreciated the genuine interest and pride she shows in ensuring his success. If there are areas he is having an extra hard time, she recommends additional time; if there is not much work on a given tutor day she does other work with him; Their time together is always constructive and valuable -- (Side note: he has an A in statistics right now!!). Simply put ... we love Sage. They are our true partners in parenting. Both of our children have used Sage. Because we were a bit over anxious, our son attended three different SSAT prep programs. He said that Sage was the most engaging and most effective of all three. We couldn't be happier with the improvement in his score. Our daughter had equally impressive improvements with her score. Our daughter also works with a Sage tutor after school for homework/organizational help.
