I contracted Mathis Home Improvement to install new leaf guard gutters on both the upper and lower sections of my home, and I couldn't be more pleased with their work. Initially, I planned to have Mathis handle only the upper-story gutters while I installed gutter guards on the lower section myself. After spending three days trying to complete the lower section, I realized the results neither looked right nor functioned properly. I decided to have Mathis finish the entire job, and it was absolutely the right decision. The workmanship was excellent, and the finished product both performs well and greatly enhances the appearance of my home. This year, Mathis returned to inspect the gutter seams, and I asked their technicians (Antonio and Abraham) if they could also trim a limb that was hanging over the roof. They took care of it promptly and professionally with no charge--another example of their outstanding customer service. I have always done most of my own home repairs, but at 72, I can no longer take the risks that working at those heights requires. It is reassuring to know that I can rely on a company like Mathis Home Improvement for quality work, attention to detail, trustworthy service and a fair price. I used Mathis many times over the past 10 years, but they have recently lost my business due to bad customer service and high prices. I will not use them or recommend them anymore. The list of work I've employed Mathis includes two gutter projects, a gutter repair, gutter cleaning and some roof work. I've also referred them numerous times. What I have noticed over the years as they've grown and expanded is that there is less of a personal customer service than before. The owner, John, used to do estimates and would even be onsite during projects, but more recently they are using "estimators", aka sales guys, to do all the quotes and interface with customers. I've also noticed a lag in response time between when a request or question is asked of the receptionist, and when they call you back. On one project, they subcontracted the crew, and there was so much miscommunication between the sales guy, the customer (me) and the crew, that mistakes were made, and the final invoice was marked up $300 more than the estimate. Cost wise, they are on the higher end for gutter and roofs. For example - i received 3 quotes for a job, and they came in the highest of the 3. When I mentioned this to the sales person, he immediately offered a cheaper price - $300 off the original estimate. While this is helpful, I'd rather have gotten the "real" price up front. This is the cost of having sales people working on commissions. The last project (last straw!) they quoted me went awry. The workers didn't show when they were supposed to, the sales guy stopped answering my calls, and they re-quoted the job twice in the span of a conversation to get me to employ them. It felt like I was negotiating a used car! I went elsewhere, and the exact same work ended up costing me $450 less than the final Mathis quote. Summary: Pros: full product offering, good products, established vendor. Cons: poor customer service, slow response times, pricey. No benefit of having been a loyal customer. I had continued to go with them out of familiarity, but the price increases and customer service have forced me to look for other vendors. read more

I had a window break during a heavy storm in autumn and two others that didn't close any longer due to age-related warping. I found Mathis via the phone book and went in person to get an appointment for an estimate. The receptionist was great, though she was the only one on site and was upfront about not knowing much about the windows they carried or offered. No problem; booked an estimate. The estimate guy was a salesman. He made condescending comments about my home, my belongings, and the equipment in my home for my hobbies. He constantly talked over me when I tried to say what I was wanting to be done and it was clear that he didn't listen to anything I said if it wasn't what he wanted to hear. I wanted 3 windows and a small portion of the house's gutters replaced. He kept trying to insist that it was cheaper to replace all 13 windows in my house and that it was cheaper to replace the entirety of my gutters, even though I stated plainly that I had no interest in doing so. Further, I was never shown or offered the option to choose what type of windows I wanted: he tried to dictate that choice for me and got confrontational and condescending when I asked about other window options. I don't know if it was because I'm noticeably disabled or if they treat everyone this abysmally, but I promptly looked elsewhere and had a most pleasant experience with another company within a week. That company had an estimate, inspection, final inspection, and my window order underway before the Mathis guy bothered to email me the quotes. AND THE QUOTES! Even though I clearly and repeatedly said I didn't want to replace everything, he included quotes for it anyway, trying to push the issue. I don't know what world they live in, but $8000 IS NOT cheaper than $2100. Further, it took several months after to get them to quit calling me about "when can we get a deposit so we can get started on your windows?" Don't call me, I'll (not) call you...ever, for anything. read more
