I love this place. If there was one in Glasgow I would visit all the time. In fact there should be one in Glasgow, but this ain't the place to campaign for that! So what is it? Is a huge food and drinks warehouse/hall selling some amazing quality produce at all sorts of mini stalls/cafes/pop ups. It's like a market but in doors and it's ace. Some of the highlights are - Hello good pie - the most amazing dessert pies you will ever try..... Like ever. Savoury ones are good to. Hop yard - awesome and friendly craft beer bar, great range and lovely decor/location. Such a cool place for a pint. Altier Asian tapas - on a Sunday they do pho as well. It was some of the tastiest I had ever tried. So good and authentic. These were my three favourite spots, but there was tonnes of others. Everything from sandwich shops to coffee places, tapas to seafood. Get yourself along and try it! read more

I really wanted to love Mathallen but I just like it. As an American I love the food court style of dinning. Mathallen is so so expensive though! Great quality products and the concept is excellent so I´ll be back but it´s not a frequent stop for me. read more

Mathallen is awesome! I have no idea why anyone would bother going to the grocery with this place in existence. The hubby and I have ate and drank here a few times and done our grocery shopping. There's produce, an amazing butcher, seafood, meats, cheeses, chocolates, dry goods, pasta, beer and the list goes on. I love that you can buy some food to eat and then sit at a table in the middle and chill and eat and socialize. There is a bar in the middle where you can order drinks too which is great! The definite stops to make in here at the very minimum are Ma Poule, Hopyard and Hello Good Pie. read more

I hate that I didn't love this place, because it had all the marking of success. My favourite thing is the Mathallen building itself: beautiful brick and a fine repurposed use of space. However: the buzz around Mathallen oversold, and the reality underdelivered. It hardly felt like the "center for Norwegian food culture"; quite a few of the products were ones that either originated, or can be easily found in, the UK. Divine Chocolates, for instance, are delicious, but coming from the USA hardly give a sense for small locally-produced support. There are food stalls (like in a more traditional farmer's market) as well as permanent restaurants around the perimeter. Some are also a mix of sit-and-eat and take to go, such as the pie shop (separate review coming). A nice fishmonger. A place for Spanish tapas. It's pleasant to walk through but the vibe is really 'try-hard'; like the people behind Mathallen were wanting to take aspects from a traditional market but then make it more exclusive thereby alienating many would-be shoppers? To end on a high note: I had some amazing brie at the cheesemonger that tasted like buttery cauliflower (seriously), and was also introduced to Norwegian brown cheese by a very well-informed stall owner. Yelp note: I recognise this review might read harshly, but also concede that Mathallen might just not have hit its stride just yet. Right now it's trying to be too much to too many...striking the balance that they are attempting to (cold but warm! modern but traditional! accessible but exclusive! local but global!) could take time if it even has a chance of success. read more

Overall this is a great concept and a great place to sample a variety of food. We had good sushi, mussels, tea and pastries. Just be aware that the hours listed for each vendor on the hall's website are not accurate. Half the shops that were supposed to open at 10 opened at 11, and shops that were supposed to close at 19 closed at 17 or 18. Frustrating if you're trying to plan a busy day. Planning to be there early afternoon is the safest bet. read more

Overrated: It's a medium-sized building with about 20-30 ultra-high too sterile, modernly designed seafood, meat, cheese, chocolate and wine shops. It's designed so high-end, the byproduct is an air of pretentiousness that makes Whole Foods seem down-to-earth. This means that if you're a visitor, you can't afford anything, especially local goods. I'd skip it if I came back. read more

This might be like swearing at church, but this place is a lot smaller then i expected it to be. I was here on a saturday, and thats like just working against the crowd. It was packed here!! Not in a good way. First off i really did not get the feel of this place. Is a huge restaurant or is it a huge marked place. it supposed to be both. But its obvious that the restaurant part is really important, most of the space is for dining and not shopping. It seems to me that they want to to come, stay there all day and drink. And a lot of people did just that, but the turn-over on the tables where slow. We ended up just walking around, getting some stuff and then just walk back home to prepare our food. My hopes might effect my rating, but i really had hoped for something amazing and where people went around, buying their lunch, sitting down at a table to prepare it and enjoy and then get moving again. But there are some amazing stores here and thats whats saves my experience and the food that we did get was really good! read more

A lot of variety food from about twenty restaurants on two floors, located in an old factory by the picturesque Akerselva river that runs through the middle of the capital and into the calm Oslofjord. The best one is Mashmans, an absolutely five star restaurant and delicatessen that have several outlets and branches throughout Oslo city. I chose seafood...fresh oysters that shone like pearls inside and tasted deliciously with a glass of icy French Mouet & Chandon champagne. Mashmans have fresh, natural local Norwegian, Scandinavian and French natural first class gourmet food with many interesting and original typical European dishes to choose from. One specialty to recommend is the rare, fresh North Sea crayfish, that tastes heavenly sauteed in butter and garlic, and tastes very juicy and looks like a breed between Atlantic lobster and sea shrimp. It is caught outside the island of Froya in northern Trondelag. Mashmans is worth a visit and also a couple of the others which I will definitely return to test out during the summer of 2018. Mathallen is a very cool foodhall but we made the wrong choice... we went to the chinese noodles stand to order bao burgers with a fried rice. The bao burgers were ok, but the hoisin sauce was a bit too heavy. The fried rice was tasteless... And the staff not that friendly. I couldn't find the name of the stand on Mathallen's website, maybe it is closed? I still give 4 stars because Mathallen is cool! read more

Too much good, fresh food to tempt me! While I considered it a tad pricey, figure it's normal for Norway. Plenty of choices, great for a meal / snack / gifts! Big props to Den Blind Ku. A very nice and helpful young woman explained several of the traditional Norwegian cheeses to me, giving me big samples to nibble, and finally selling me on their clove/nutmeg Gouda, which was so creamy and warm. The one with fenugreek was very tasty as well. Also, to the man at Gutta Pa Haugen for going over the different types of cured meats and showing me the best lamb prosciutto I've ever eaten. Now if only I can find something comparable in the states! read more

Great to visit here during weekends lots of choices for food and you get to see it all. Prices are a little high as is all of Oslo. However a very nice experience to walk around and take a look, or relax there with the ambiance. read more

Very good location and place in Oslo. Lots of farmer sourced food and options. My favorite places here are the pizza place, the cheese from Den Blinden Ku and the small stands. I am not a huge fan of the Asian places here. The noodle bar is just OK compared to what you get in Asia. Hitchhiker has some fantastic options but more fusion, and very expensive for street food:) read more

Travel anywhere else outside Oslo, in Norway, and you´ll see city centers filled with urban planners trying to make something to emulate this project, pitifully. Slick marketing, shiny packaging and sign boards, attracting high end snobbery to the max. Executed poorly, this is like bourgeois paradise. Executed fairly well, as Mathallen is, then at least on paper succeeds - filled with nice artisanal goods, local produce, variation, locale. The connection to the farmers market is probably the best thing about the place. The opening hours, few redundant vendors and lame business folk -- is not. read more

Great little market with tons of different things. From groceries, desserts and bread and coffee to restaurants, etc. We tried two things form the market from different places (can't remember which ones though). One was like a duck sandwich and the other I think was some type of chicken salad sandwich. They were truthfully just okay, nothing special to me. Though expensive to me, norway is general is expensive for people coming from the US though and used to prices being 50% lower for food lol. I paid basically 15-20 bucks for a basic sandwich that in the US you probably would pay max 10-15 bucks. I liked the market, super cute and fun, but not the prices, and not the food i tried. Next time I go Im gonna find out what to try first on yelp so its worth the money lol. read more

Great small places to eat there. Can get surprisingly expensive but there is an excellent pizza and noodle place there that offers super tasty food. Good buZz if you manage to hit it at the right time. Can get uncomfortably busy and strangely quiet too. Totally recommend it as it'll have something for everyone. read more

Nice work, Oslo! Amazing place for great food and people watching and hanging out inside or out for whatever beverage you could desire. It's expensive but don't forget you're in the most expensive city in Europe. Very friendly folks throughout. Take a stroll up or down the river to find more spots for sipping and people watching. From what I have seen in Oslo, I would probably spend a lot of time here. You can find those kind of food courts in a lot of cities but I was very pleased with that one. The building itself is very nice, industrial style. Inside it looks nice too, very clean. You can find food from all over the world and each little shop has its own style. It takes forever to decide what to eat because everything looks great. I thought I should have local food while being there so I opted for meatballs in a gravy sauce with mashed potatoes and some berries. The cool thing is that you can take away food from anywhere and eat it in the middle. There is a nice bar where you are allowed to sit as long as you order some drinks. I enjoyed my meal a lot. It was exactly what I needed to warm up. I wish I would have had more time to come back! read more

Hyped up place. Some of the stalls are quality, but alot are just mediocre and for the most part overpriced. Average bakery, good coffee shop, quality butcher/deli and vegi-shop Pretty sure that there will be some changes to get the right mix. Pretty cool place to try some different types of food. There are several Spanish themed tapas bar, a sushi place, some tea and coffee shops, cheese counter and meat and seafood counters and a whole bunch of other stuff I am missing. We stopped by one of the tapas places and had a drink and some bicadillos - San Sebastián style. Then we headed to the seafood place in the back and had some awesome pepper grilled king crab. The sauce was very flavorful and the meat melt in your mouth. One of the other travelers had mussels that he said were the best he'd ever had. Good place to stop by for a quick bite at a food counter. Not the best if you are looking for a full service sit down restaurant. read more

An amazing food hall. Come here to buy your fresh meat or fish for dinner, stock up on speciality food items or grab a coffee and piece of pie. The smell of the paella, coffee and duck confit makes you hungry as you enter. We stopped at Havana Coffee and had the best coffee in Oslo. Sadly no seafood paella that day so we wandered past the pulled pork and duck confit stands and dived into dessert. 'Only the good pie young' had the THE most amazing desserts. We died and went to pie heaven. Lemon meringue pie and chocolate & peanut butter pie. We licked the paper! Great cheese stall where we sampled Brie and Gouda and the nice lady opened a wrapped brown cheese for us to try. The local speciality. Didn't take for 2 of us even if it is a big thing on hot buttered waffles. We will stick with strawberries! read more

This is the oldest food hall in Oslo, in the new area called Vulkan, which is right across the river from Grünerløkka. Inside there are many choices for food, including tapas, pretzels, chicken fish and more. We tried the tapas place and it was amazing. My favorite were the foie gras and then the tortilla. Then we went to the pretzel place to have a pretzel partially dipped in chocolate. This is not as big as the Östermalms Saluhall in Stockholm but is certainly worth a visit. Mathallen is one of my favorite places in Oslo. I can't really put my finger on exactly what it is that makes it so special but I can go there as often as I can and have a completely different experience every visit. Some of my fav places within Mathallen: the cheese place where I can taste their amazing selection, hello good-pie, Oslo cupcakes stand that comes every Sunday, and this champagneria in a corner that has delish cava for only 46 kr. read more

A retrofitted indoor market with an excellent variety of food and drink, etc. We had an amazing chicken noodle bowl from... Noodles, and tried whale steak for the first time at Obento Box, which was delicious. Stop by Solberg & Hansen for some good black coffee. Went to several places here, varied and reasonably priced food. The noodle place was good but used a bit too much sauce for my taste. Hello good pie had yummy mini pies, the chocolate peanut butter one was quite rich, tasted like mousse. Barramon was my favourite place, lots of yummy tapas set on little pieces of bread. I had 3 types, topped with mushrooms, chorizo, and ham. All were fantastic, I could have easier eaten several more. read more

Very crowded and tight .It's very clear that they have a target costumer , it's not come all.. . Service was my biggest disappointment , the guy that "helped" me was rude , and pretentious...I was shocked to be honest.Work in service myself, and if they think arrogance is going to make them look more prestigious , they are very wrong. I had an incredible time at Mathallan!! Mathallan seems to fall in the trend of food halls that has been popping up around the world in the past few years, but definitely had everything you could want. There are a huge variety of food options and types ranging from coffee to Latin American street food! I personally was excited by the amount of cheese and chocolate options and made a point to walk around to all over the vendors at least once. I came around lunch time and got an adorable mini quiche and some amazing gelato and some cheese for later. One of my friends got an incredible looking croque monsieur that she claimed was the best she had ever had. The prices were reasonable (I think I paid around 60kr for my mini quiche) for Oslo. They also host fun events like taco and tequila night if you want to visit an event. Overall, I would definitely recommend stopping by and checking it out. read more
