I promised myself that I'd take the time to write a review for Matgatan 22 if our entrees were as delicious as the "Herring with bread" we started with.... They were! The Bouillabaisse, fish soup with saffron was delightful with lots of salmon, mussels, shrimp, peppers, served with a thin baguette. We also enjoyed the salad with marinated salmon - no skimping on the salmon with a hard boiled egg, and potatoes served on mixed greens. Service was friendly and these dishes were satisfying for the two of us. Happy to recommend this restaurant in Gamla Stan.

Quick and friendly service in a very nice atmosphere in Stockholms Old town The Food was very delicious but only a little more side dish potatoes would have Been fantastic Its our first day in Stockholm so i am Not Sure about the Price Level but Yelp Rates this Restaurant with 1 $ - a Main dish here is around 18 to 20 Euros ... probably more $$, even in expensive Sweden;)

    Pretzel with dips!!!

On a budget so chose the $ price filter and this place popped up. Read about the pretzel with the dips as an appetizer and went for it. Opted to wait to see if it serving was too big before I decided on whether to get an item from lunch menu. When I saw the pretzel and the size of dips I decided to just have that. There were 6-7 dips to choose 3 from and I chose cream cheese, pate with lingonberry (liver spread) and pesto roso with chilliflakes. By far more than enough and very tasty. 85kr pretzel + 25kr coffee + 24kr tip= 134kr total. Not bad for good service and people watching if you're lucky to catch an outside table.

    Pulled pork with salad

My friend and I visiting from Chicago both ordered the pulled pork. I have to say, I'm astonished at the entire meal. I started with the side salad that comes with the sandwich. I don't think I've ever had fresher produce - especially the peppers and tomatoes. Moving onto the pulled pork sandwich itself, the pork was succulent with excellent sauce as well. It was hard to resist scarfing the whole thing down. Possibly the best part of this whole experience was the cost - 99:-, or roughly $12. For such a new place (apparently only 3 weeks old!), they've sure got some great stuff going for them. Also noteworthy is the owner works in the restaurant and goes to the market every morning before opening to ensure freshness of the ingredients - really makes a difference!

Got the usual, the herring with mashed potatoes, three sides, and a piece of rye crisp. We had the pickled cucumber, lingonberries and cremefreche salad. Nice serving but I wanted more. IT IS SO GOOD. But we are here for a month so I WILL be back. I meant to take pictures of the food but I was too anxious to eat. Friendly service as always. Nicely packed to go. We have been coming here for years and I highly recommend.

It's pretty much a one person show from what I could see. The owner attended to me efficiently and without the slightest hesitation. I'm sorry to say that I don't speak Swedish (I wish I did I can tell you) but he was able to communicate with me and for that I will always be grateful. My plate had, if I recall correctly, four breaded and fried herring fillets. It had a coleslaw (which I found a surprising addition, creamy mashed potatoes, pickled cucumbers, red onions, and a little wedge of crispbread. I loved every bite. It was a generous plate. I particularly enjoyed eating a combination of the potatoes, cuke, onion, and fish on a corner of the crispbread as I munched away. There are a few nearby picnic type tables. So there was a place I could sit and enjoy this meal overlooking the water and a corner of the old town. If you find yourself in Stockholm, do yourself a favor and go to here. Even if you think you don't like herring, try it this way. I bet you'd be surprised.

Felt a bit like a college frat party. Almost skipped it, based on that underwhelming evening, but had to give it another shot late upon an icy and still midnight clear in January. Just amazing...Perfect soundtrack. Sat at the bar to watch the crew, which builds drinks with a bit of panache & showmanship. Started with their Whisky for the Holy Ghost and it was in fact a religious experience: Ghost bourbon, amaretto, Maurin Quina, bitters, salt and served in a chilled corked flask topped with smoke that lingered and really added to the ceremony & taste. My fellow penitents had tasty espresso drinks. It was the second round, however, that was truly memorable. I asked the mad genius behind the bar to concoct an extemporaneous "riff on a Sazerac." Maybe lost in translation, and ended up with more a riff on a vieux carre, but what a riff it was! Michters Rye, calvados in lieu of cognac, a healthy dose of some kind of floral bitters, a few other bitters and a sazeracky absinthe spritz. Guy said he had no idea how it would be, but it was freaking perfection! Skål, indeed.
