Phenomenal find! An incredible and memorable meal. A quick search for a place to eat lead us down the street, but so glad we decided not to wait and look for something else. This stop is a gem!!! Lots of locals + plenty of business travelers + tourists all dining with ample space, fantastic service, offering indoor and outdoor dining, and traditional Swedish dishes. Hopefully the pics do it some justice. Presentation was wonderful. Run don't walk, unless it's down the few steps if going to/from the palace. This place is definitely deserving of a repeat visit and lots of recommendations.
We had a great lunch at Tradition last week when we spent the day exploring Gamla Stan. I wouldn't have expected to find this restaurant so close to the touristy capital of the city (Gamla Stan has so many attractions and incredible architecture and charm, everyone simply has to go on a first visit to Stockholm), because it's so sophisticated and charming and gorgeous. But here it was. (We had a reservation, which I recommend, because it seemed popular for lunch even on a weekday). The lunch menu is small, just a few choices, but that's all you'll need. Our waiter recommended a dish to my husband (potato pancake with fried pork and lingonberries), which he loved. I got their fried fish dish (which they ran out of by the time we were leaving the restaurant), which I loved. The service was fantastic, too. And so was the glass of wine the waiter recommended from their wine list. So, all in all, just a delicious meal. I'd love to return for dinner if I return to Stockholm!
Staying in the historic Gamla Stan neighborhood of Stockholm, I'd expect most restaurants to cater to tourists. When this happens, quality tends to tumble while prices soar. Thankfully, this was not the case with Restaurang Tradition. I wanted to fit in some "traditional" Swedish cuisine on my first night of the trip and found this cozy, sleek spot on a side street near the harbour. I did a starter of the S.O.S. (Herring sampler) with an aquavit pairing, and an entree of meatballs. Once my order was in, a bread basket came to the table: small rolls of dark rye and a big crispbread, with whipped butter and a caviar spread. The caviar spread hit the right notes: smoky and fishy (in a good way) without overwhelming with salt. Each of the herrings in the sampler were tasty: a saffron sauce, a green onion and mustard sauce, and traditional dill pickled, served with two small boiled potatoes, chopped red onion, a piece of cheddar, and fresh mayo. The aquavits were a perfect match: apple and caraway (with the saffron), citrus and dill (with the green onion), and traditional caraway and dill (with the traditional pickled) The meatballs were phenomenal: tender and bathed in a brown stock + cream sauce with potato puree, crisp pickled cucumber, and bracingly tart lingonberries. An all around excellent meal
This restaurant was recommended by an employee of the Moderna Museet, and I am eternally grateful to that person, because Tradition DELIVERED! The venue itself is cute and quaint, dimly lit when I went on a rainy Wednesday afternoon. My friend and I were seated right away and had a very pleasant waitress. I ended up ordering the meatballs. So, I'm not sure what IKEA in the US has been serving, but the things they call meatballs have NADA on Swedish meatballs actually made in Sweden! Ooohweee, the meatballs at Tradition were amazeballs. The sauce was delicious and I made a point to dip every bit of those awesome mashed potatoes in it. I was a little skeptical of the lingonberries, but they were a perfect addition. Like cranberry sauce, they complimented the other food. Payment was a breeze and soon we were on our way, but I'll never forget how great that meal was. And I doubt I'll ever eat meatballs at IKEA again.

This place doesn't look inviting from the outside and it was hard to tell that it was open! We ordered a Swedish Martini and a pink gin and tonic and both were very good. We had scallops in cream sauce as a starter (4 scallops) with apple and shredded fennel. Delicious! And we thought we didn't like fennel! My entree was the mushroom dumpling and it was delicious. The meat dumpling was good too but I'd recommend the mushroom. We had a chocolate coconut ball for dessert- just enough for a few bites. Our waitress was very knowledgeable and always appeared at the right time. Have to go back for the herring appetizer! Highly recommend!
Both of my tour guides recommended Tradition and that's on top of some eating guides recommended. I was really looking forward to this dinner. We were early for our reservation at 5:00 and we were the only ones in the restaurant for the first half hour or so. The host was warm, welcoming and friendly. He seemed to sincerely appreciate our business this evening and that really helped. Great beer and wine list. I enjoyed a tasty local draft beer from Nynäshamns Ångbryggeri with dinner. For main course, I chose the pork dumplings. They were heavenly. A good portion of dumpling stuffed with chopped spiced pork and topped with lingonberries. It was amazing. My friend went straight traditional, getting the köttbullar (Swedish meatballs) with mashed potatoes, lingonberries and pickled cucumber. The meatballs were absolutely excellent and the potatoes were perfectly smooth. It was a big portion and we felt bad that we just couldn't finish it all because we left room for dessert. We shared a slice of chocolate cake topped with whipped cream. None of that canned stuff here. Light cake that was dense with chocolate dusted with sugar and served with a big dollop of cream and blueberries. It was amazing. This was a terrific meal. You won't be disappointed. The restaurant is situated in Gamla Stan (old town) and very close by the Royal Palace. It was my first time in Sweden, and we had just finished touring the palace. I was also desperate to check off Swedish meatballs off my list, so we ended up here after seeing all the reviews. You have to wait inside by the door to be seated--it took a while even when the restaurant wasn't full that we actually almost decided to leave! We ordered 3 main courses between the two of us to try: traditional Swedish meatballs (5/5), cod, and mushroom dumplings (4/5). The presentation of all the food was excellent. A small plate of complimentary bread and crackers and butters (includes a fish butter, which was neat) were provided. The portions for both the meatballs and cod were perfect. The meatballs left more to be desired and felt more like an appetizer. I was mostly surprised by the meatball dish as someone who doesn't really eat meat often. It was tasty and filling with all the different flavors and textures, highly recommended. The ambiance of the place felt soothing and calm, a nice contrast to the busy street outside at the time. The space was medium size, but still felt cozy. Our interaction with the staff was pretty minimal, but we had no problems with that. All in all, I would definitely come back mostly for the Swedish meatball dish!

Freaking fantastic. If you're looking to try traditional Swedish cuisine, you must come here. We started with the herring three ways paired with their aquavit recommendations. I was very skeptical of pickled herring but it was refreshing and delicious. There's complimentary bread that's also good. I got the Swedish meatballs and my boyfriend got the dumplings. Both were stellar. The texture of the dumplings were amazingly pillowy, and I'm still thinking of how they perfected it. The Swedish meatballs were everything and more. I wish I could have given that bowl a hug. Our waitress was very kind and helpful. I'd loveeee to come back.
Great location in Gamla Stan, great ambiance and fantastic food! We booked a 6 pm reservation and by the time we left the restaurant was full. We enjoyed the Midsommer and pink gin and tonic cocktails to start with the asparagus and scallops. Just delicious. The dumplings, cod and meatballs were so good. We finished with both the apple crumble and the chocolate cake. Would highly recommend.
Are you a tourist looking for authentic Swedish meatballs? Lucky for you THIS is the only review you need to read. Located in Gamla San (Stockholm Old Town), this place had the best Swedish meatballs in the area! I was recommended this place by locals. It's in an intimate part of Gamla San. The service was excellent! No queue to wait for us, we were seated immediately (probably depends on timing) but we were there on a Saturday and had no issue. Lovely little place to grab a bite in old town Stockholm. Probably the best Swedish meatballs you will find. Centrally located, with a friendly staff and an ample bar. Great for grabbing a casual bit after exploring the city. I went with the meatballs and was very happy. The mashed potatoes were a bit thick but tater finely. Also enjoyed the trio of herring!

This was some of the best food we've eaten. We quickly started to think about where we rank this in our favorite of all time. Sam the manager was really great to us, and many servers would come and check in frequently. We sat outside which was nice, and when it got a little chilly they had heat lamps above the whole patio. Overall great experience. We thought the Skaden was amazing and having tried many other meatballs, these were definitely the best ones we have had! read more
We joined two friends for dinner at this Scandinavian restaurant in Old Town and as others noted it is expen$ive for what you get ($2,000 swedish krona for our share ). What was ordered: arctic char, salted smoked salmon, Swedish meatballs, a bottle of wine and 2 desserts (carrot cake and cheesecake). Service is not attentive but ok. We did wait FOREVER for dessert because the server forgot to put the order in! The restaurant has a nice feel but does feel a bit crowded with adjoining tables being very close. All in all it was a fine meal but comparable food can be had for a lower price point outside the old town. read more
One of the best meals we've eaten in Stockholm, or perhaps Europe. Great ambience, warm and cozy, super friendly and open space too. The whole area has a nice vibe and the restaurant doesn't disappoint. Worth a visit to the city just to go here next time. read more

Excellent meal from beginning to end. Wait staff was friendly. The food was delicious. Ambience was perfect. Wait wasn't long. I ordered the flank steak and it was one of the best I've ever had. The apple crisp dessert was also apparently delicious, according to one of the girls in my party. Would 100% return! Highly recommend read more

Tradition is a great spot to dine if you're looking for traditional Swedish cuisine. It was recommended in my Phaidon Wallpaper Guide tour book for Stockholm and I typically trust their carefully selected restaurant picks. Prices were decent - expensive, but in line with most mid to upper tier restaurants in Sweden. As Stockholm has really become so cosmopolitan in terms of dining options, the first few times I visited, I wanted to try "traditional" Swedish cuisine, but really struggled to find good options. Tradition fills that void nicely and I'll definitely go back anytime I'm in the city. read more

The service was wonderful. The shrimp toast was amazing! The beef dish didn't looked simple but omg was so good! The beef was super super tender! The smoked reindeer hearts was interesting. The short ribs I would skip because it was not what we were used it. It was very salty. But everyone around us seemed to enjoy it so maybe it just didn't fit our taste. Recommended for a nice intimate dinner when in Stockholm! read more
I travel for the food. And when I went to Stockholm for the first time, I knew I wanted to try traditional Swedish food. I googled restaurants in Stockholm and boom! Tradition. Aptly named! The first thing I saw on their website was a line that said they serve traditional, home-cooked Swedish food. "Period." I was sold! In fact, it was a little eerie how perfectly it answered my criteria. I perused the menu (they have an entirely English website option) and knew what I was going to eat months in advance. When I finally got to Stockholm, I made a beeline for Tradition. It had been on my mind for months, and my body was ready for some great food. Their menu changes, so I don't believe what I had is still being served. They typically, however, keep the same theme with variations of flavors. The beef option was elk, and it was incredible. My fiancé actually ended up giving it to me, because I loved it so much! There were two thick strips of crispy bacon on top, and the whole thing was slathered in mushroom sauce. It was delectably rich, and I savored each bite as much as I could while simultaneously wanting to shove it all into my mouth gleefully. I had ordered some potato dumplings filled with pork for my entree. I'm usually a big fan of dumplings, and I don't think stuffing them with meat is ever a bad idea. These weren't my cup of tea, however. The dumplings were more glutinous and less fluffy than I like them (which made more sense to me after I tried palt, which I also didn't like). Also, the meat was seasoned with maybe nutmeg, which didn't sit right on either of our tongues. We tried our best, but we couldn't bring ourselves to even touch the third dumpling. A shame, really. The appetizers were much better. We ordered smoked reindeer and lox with toast and mustard sauce. Pretty sure I licked the plates. The restaurant was clean, inviting, and very cute inside. I really appreciated the English menus, even though my fiancé is Swedish and could translate everything if necessary. It is a little pricey. Two entrees, two appetizers, and one glass of milk ended up being a $70 lunch. Of course, I was fine with this, since I had planned it in advance. And it is Stockholm. Still, it's not the cheapest place. I would definitely say it's for splurging. Overall, I really enjoyed Tradition, and I would definitely go again. read more
We had a fantastic meal here at the larger communal table which was quite festively decorated for the holidays. Service was friendly and efficient by swedish standards. The menu was exclusively in Swedish perhaps to better align with the focus on traditional swedish food. I had the three course tasting menu with the ocean trout which was all beautifully presented and served. My three appetizers were massive and easy to share. My favorite was the tiny roe. The crumble dessert was fantastic. My two Swedish dining companions had Kroppkakor for the first time ever. A very traditional Swedish dish of potato bun surrounding pork and onions. Served in a butter sauce with lingonberries on the side. This was absolutely delicious to try and the bun had a unique flavor. The closest dish for an American might be a steamed pork bun (char sui) at dim sum but with a very different flavor profile. Well worth trying. The Kroppkakor serving was easily enough for 2! Make sure to get reservations. read more

Such a great meal that we stumbled upon! We were walking back to our hotel from the ABBA Museum. There was a wait but a very short one. We were seated at the bar which was much quieter than a traditional bar. Started with the vasterbotten cheese dip with crisp bread. Yum! It was a perfect snack as we drank our beers (both from Stockholm Brewing Co). With advice from the waitress, I ordered the fried mustard breaded Baltic herring with browned butter, lemon and potato purée. It was very good. As someone who is lactose intolerant, I was pleasantly surprised to see all of the dishes are lactose free! Loved our meal here and would recommend a stop there - make reservations! read more

One word: Toasts! Some more words: The toasts here are things of beauty, especially the smoked reindeer with whitefish roe and the gravlax with mustard sauce. We came here twice in four days during our vacation because they were so good. The main courses are also good, albeit a bit less memorable, in part because they're deconstructed in a way that makes eating somewhat cumbersome. Example: Swedish meatballs are served by themselves, and then you get three separate bowls for potatoes, lingonberries and cucumbers. It's a bit of a hassle. Overall a lovely spot with a thoughtful drink list, sophisticated ambiance and super-friendly people. read more
We found this place walking around Gamla Stan and decided to stop for dinner. It's a casual Swedish restaurant serving good basic Swedish food. I loved it :-) They have an outside terrace and seating for the warm days. The menu has a bunch of traditional Swedish dishes and some interesting starters. The lax was really good and I ordered the beef brisket for main. It was the best brisket I have had in a long time. Tender delicious and I licked my plate clean...yumm. Service was polite and friendly and the place was packed most of the time we were there. They did not rush us in any way and we really enjoyed our meal. The rhubarb crumble with a vanilla sauce was also delicious. I would definitely come back here again. It's good homely food served in a nice casual Scandinavian setting. read more
We were recommended Tradition by some local Swedish friends and decided to try it out for our last night in Stockholm. It's located in the old town of Gamla Stan but removed from the super touristy area. Nevertheless, it's definitely a popular place for tourists for some traditional Swedish food. It's a bit pricey, but their takes on the classics are pretty delicious. For appetizers, we tried the beet salad and toast skagen, the latter of which looked nothing like the traditional shrimp toast I saw everywhere in Sweden! Instead of a pile of little shrimps, Tradition finely minces theirs, mixes it with mayo, and carefully forms it onto a little toast. It's very rich but had great flavor, particularly with the roe on top. I went with the Swedish meatballs for my main, and I was actually a little disappointed; while the potatoes, lingonberries, and pickled cucumber were all fresh and delicious, the meatballs themselves were dry and tasted very beefy. We also tried the dumplings with pork which were MASSIVE. Each one was the size of a baseball, but really light and fluffy. It's definitely a hearty dish! Overall, I thought the food was very good and of very high quality, but I probably wouldn't seek Tradition out on my next trip. It's a great restaurant for a romantic date or special occasion though. Just be careful if you sit at one of their tables with hanging overhead lights though - I saw several people bang their heads when not paying attention! read more

Enjoying Gamla Stan, the Mr & I realized were were completely hungry. Yelp guided us to Tradition & it was a fantastic find! Offering vegetarian-friendly fare, we enjoyed: Chilled white asparagus soup and a white asparagus salad. Both were very light and refreshing! Main dishes were the veggie potato dumplings with porcini mushroom filling. Awesome traditional swedish food. I came here during maybe off peak hours, at like 3pm. So the restaurant looked closed from the outside but luckily I tried to enter and the door was open! I believe the chef was my waiter and he was so helpful. I liked the decor, just made me think of typical swedish simple design. I ate by myself, so I got 3 appetizers to get the most out of my meal. I ordered the lingonberry juice which was so tasty! the "sikaforsrora" which was the reindeer meat with fish roe. and it was an interesting dish! tasted like smoked sausage. I had to try the grav lax because on google it says its a traditional swedish food. I wasn't too impressed. just tasted like lox with mustard. however the salmon was very fresh. i also had the "lerpotta sill" which was the herring with egg and brown butter sauce. interesting combo. I like the flavor of brown butter sauce so I couldn't go wrong with this order. overall I had a wonderful experience here. food was amazing. it's a must try if you're in gamla stan!!! read more

We made a reservation at this restaurant at the end of July by telephone. However when we arrived there was no record of us. The place was fully booked. Despite that fact the maitre Bjorn, was extremely accommodating and found a table for us as long as we could vacate it in an hour and a half. We happily agreed to his terms. We both ordered the traditional Swedish meatballs with pickled cucumbers, lingonberry sauce, and mashed potatoes. Everything was cooked perfectly and the meatballs were soft and juicy. The only way to make them better would be to reduce the salt a little bit. Otherwise everything was great. Service was also attentive and friendly. The restaurant was attractive and well situated in Gamla Stan. read more

I'm not an expert on Swedish food but this strikes me to be the way I would expect my non existing Swedish grandma to prepare a Sunday dinner for the whole family. Interior is simple and clean. The staff was very friendly and helpful. read more
