Called ahead to make an appointment for drop off, was quickly pushed off the phone and told I didn't need one. Five minutes later, I walk in with items only to be confronted by the same rude person that I spoke to on the phone. She tells me that I need an appointment and insists that I said I only needed to drop off one item on the phone (...when I clearly said I had to drop off about 20 items). Without even offering to schedule an appointment, she shoo-ed me and my arms full of clothing out of the store. When in Maine, it's time to acquire woodsy looks, right? I learned I could get inexpensive flannel at Renys Department Store nearby, but I was looking for well-built classics. I found a cute Pendleton Lodge Shirt for about ten bucks more (if only money weren't an object!) at Portland Flea-For-All down the road, but held out until I came here. And, yay!, I found the same type of shirt in scratchy wool and colors that my friends liked more for even less. Sold! read more

I'm in Portland about 6 or 8 times a year, and MO is always a destination for me. The bounty is incredible, and the buyers have got their game on. Well-edited consignments that include great current fashion (Prairie Underground! and others), as well as vintage, but also a section of clothing from local designers of repurposed/upcycled pieces that include denim jackets and sweaters to die for, and other things that would easily insert into a casual wardrobe. Do not miss their shoe and boot section, as well as jewelry and accessories. Honestly, I'm glad I'm not in Portland more often, as I'd be broke from shopping at this store. read more

I like this place for the fact that I got 5 brand name shirts and sweaters for 50 bucks when if I had bought them in a store, at least one of them would have cost that much. I've also put stuff on consignment there and received a moderate check after. The vintage stuff is fun to look at, though my fat ass doesn't make it into a retro size 12. The new stuff is cute and hip but over-priced, though I attest that to the fact that it's all indie labels and whatnot. The staff is hit or miss. More bitchy than nice but whatever, I'm not there to be bff's with them. They are a tad over-priced for some of their vintage stuff but it's worth it to take the time and flip through everything. All in all not a bad place if you don't feel like dealing with the classiness of the Goodwill. read more

I remember coming here for the first time around 15 years ago when I was visiting friends and scoring some great jeans back then, and have been coming back ever since. Now that I live here, it's great to be able to peek in and see what's new. I have scored some awesome stuff like a pair of designer clogs, newer stuff from some of my favorite indie designers, and nice vintage sweaters. I think the prices are typically very fair, considering it's curated second-hand stuff. Still a fan after all these years! read more

The dresses (especially the pattern) caught my eye as I walked past window as I took my first steps in Portland. I was suppose to be sight seeing, but I just wanted to look. I wasn't even in shopping mode. I just thought I would go in and walk out with nothing. But damn, was I wrong. I walked out with three cute tops (one was new only $14), a dress and two beautiful accessories. I found functional pieces and great outfits that will have me ready for summer. There were so many pretty patterns that I'm sure I would have found more but my family was waiting outside. The one dress had the right amount of vintage and hippie chic that I love. I also found a gorgeous brooch and a very unique looking stretchy ring with black stones. The prices were reasonable and well worth every penny. Hands down, Material Objects has the best selection of contemporary and vintage clothing, in the area. The vintage is unique and sometimes name brand and the contemporary pieces can at times be quite unique (depending on what you see as unique of course). I've gotten some great and unique pieces here over the years. It truly is a good staple in Portland. There's a lot of vintage out there nowadays but the owner at Material Objects has a great eye and a fair pricing system. They also always have great music on the speakers. If you're more of a vintage DVF + new Vince kinda gal (myself as of late) then you'll love Material Objects. My most recent score was a petite gold necklace with a very tiny fortune cookie charm! My family and I were in Portland for a few hours. My daughters, ages 12 and 13 love to thrift. This was our first thrift stop and the best one. We found lots of cute clothes and ended up getting overalls, a skirt that was a real find, and a few fun T-shirts. I think if we had more time we would've found some other treasures to buy. What I love about Material Objects is that it is not your average consignment store; it seems pieces are picked to be for sale to fit the stores vintage/trendy image. It is very well organized and moderately priced. Today I picked up a vintage silk scarf for $10 and a knee-length cotton green trench coat for $16. How can you beat that? There was a also a beautiful 100% wool coat for $36 that I just couldn't bring myself to buy. They also have everything from vintage white leather ladies gloves ($8), sun hats, a vest your grandmother would wear with cats on it, fancy dresses you could wear to a wedding, cozy GAP sweaters, leather motorcycle jackets, shoes galore, hand made jewelry, sunglasses and jeans. You could leave with a whole new interesting wardrobe! read more

Store was great. Organized well, good selection of bags, clothes, jewelry. I left with cute skirt and nice vintage top. Fun to poke around in, and the girl working was really nice and helpful. The guy working on Saturday 4/25 was kinda icky. I wasn't going to even write a review but when we left my sister mentioned he wasn't nice to her either, so figured I would. Everyone has off days, but he gave us dirty looks pretty much the whole time we were there and looked down on us like he was Bergdorf Goodman himself. This is my first stop when I come to Portland (from NYC). A great selection of stuff, very well organized and fairly priced. I've scored some great finds here, including a fabulous leather tote. Of particular note is the Maine-y stalwart items, including barely worn boots and Pendleton and LLBean. Also, they have a great selection of men's stuff as well. read more

Material Objects has been in business for decades and always is stocked with a great selection of curated vintage clothing, jewelry, purses, accessories shoes, etc. They also sell current items. Shop for either men's or women's . It's always affordable and a woman owned business, so I love to support it. read more

From a seller's prospective I can give only two stars; and here's why: Snobby, rude Sales-chicks! First, let's back up to my shopping/closet purging philosophy. I like to shop (a lot, okay?) and I soothe any guilty feelings by keeping the tags on my finer items until I take them out of the closet to wear. If something isn't worn for a year or two I consign them or sell them on eBay. That said, every time I go in here with a boatload of designer clothes with tags and mull around until they've gone through my offerings to decide what they want to sell and what they don't, I can hear them poking fun at the tags and volume of stuff I've brought. I want to walk over and say; "Hey, what the.......isn't this what you want? Nice clothes in perfect condition"? Hello. It's so rude and it happens every time! Otherwise, on the plus side the consignment prices are fair and I haven't had trouble getting checks. So if you don't mind putting up with stray snide remarks from the sales staff- go for it. read more

I love you so very much. Please don't ever change. This is my FAVORITE consignment shop ever. I try to limit my visits to once every couple of months because I can get a bit crazy. And by a bit crazy, I mean a lot crazy. There are always new items arriving and I always manage to find some gems. My most recent trip involved me trying on a pile of clothes and walking out with two awesome skirts and a couple of summery shirts. The variety is always there and I think there is something for everyone. The staff have always been super helpful, nice and patient. The store is fairly small and jammed with stuff. When it's busy, you'll know it because it's hard to maneuver around. The prices are really decent and I feel like I get a lot for my money. I feel like a thief buying expensive brands for $5-$10 but it's so worth it to give this place a try. read more

Eh there is better consignment shops around. I've been to a better on in Portland but was stupid enough to forget the name. Thought I'd give this one a chance during my last visit but it was just okay. Everything was really neat and tidy though which is great for browsing the problem is I browsed and browsed and found nothing. Also, for residents of the city, it is a great place to recycle old clothes and make some money. They also do a fabulous job support local artisans. Lots of neat Maine made jewelry pieces. This place is amazing! I love the on-trend, brand-conscious edit of this consignment boutique. They also have a small, quality vintage collection and men's section. The staff are amazing. They were patient with me-- I tried on half the store and only selected two pieces, though everything I tried on was really nice, too. They also recognized me when I returned later in the day. Plenty of dressing rooms. Went to two other similar shops in town, but Material Objects had the best selection, space, and staff. read more

I have better luck finding new threads here than any of the other consignment shops in Portland. The women are nice, the clothes seem to rotate through regularly, and the selection is pretty diverse. The one drawback is that the clothes are arranged by color, rather than size... so it takes more rifling through the racks to find something that will work. You'll definitely find treasure here to spruce up your wardrobe. read more

My favourite thrift store around. Has something for everybody- my mom, sister, and I can all find something here. I really like how there is a full range, vintage all the way through brand new. Great selection of Frye boots. I've bought atleast 3 pair at this store- all fairly priced. The one thing preventing this place from receiving 5 stars is their hesitance to take my trades. It can be a bit discouraging when they have so many items in the store, and how much inventory moves daily. read more

I was lucky enough to stop by when they were having their 25% off sale. The shop has a great mixture of vintage and contemporary clothing. There is a good selection of menswear which is nice too. They do a good job at curating the clothing so that it has a hip vibe. Price are reasonable even without the discount. I walked out of the store with a winter coat, a brand new/never worn pair of shoes, a pair of jeans and two blazers (one of which was new with tags) for around $85 total. I live in Boston but next time I'm in Portland this will be a must stop destination. read more

Kind of pricey for consignment. And they clearly dont look over the clothing for quality. I made the mistake of buying a pants. After 5 minutes of wear the seam has come undone. They weren't tight. I called to ask what they could do...nothing. i think id rather steer clear of garbage clothes and money down the drain. read more

My husband and I were both able to walk out with a few items each - its not everyday you find a consignment shop that has a good men's AND women's selection. I got this awesome little vintage dress for $20 and two tops for $8 each. The racks are organized by either size or color, making it really easy to browse. It's a really cute place and the lady who checked us out was really friendly :) Would definitely come back in the future! read more
