I called the United Health Care pre-authorization line after my wife took our son in and tried to…read moreconfirm that Mat-Su Regional Urgent Care is ok. After talking to three people (who never talked to each other) they said it is ok, but that I should check with the Urgent Care facility directly just in case. So I contacted Mat-Su Regional Urgent Care directly. They didn't know, but to their credit they called me back in an hour, albeit confused about what I needed and somewhat exasperated with me that I'd even ask. But I did learn something. Evidently though the Palmer Mat-Su Regional clinic is part of the Mat-Su Regional Hospital network, that particular Mat-Su Regional urgent care facility bills under its own TIN because God hates me. I don't really mean that; it's just how I felt. My point is, it's still not clear if the care will be in network or not. This Mat-Su Regional clinic has to bill under its own distinct TIN as like "Mat-Su Regional Urgent Care Palmer Campus" or something. So am I covered? They don't know. United Health Care doesn't know. Nobody knows. It's not fair that people have to live like this, and I know the clinics hate it too. But my frustration and immense dissatisfaction with the Mat-Su Regional Palmer urgent care clinic itself stems from this: I don't understand why they would brand as the same company, would have the same name, the same logo, would be the same company operationally but then possibly not be the same company for insurance and accounting purposes except to make enormously stressful and costly situations worse. For fun. It's not fair and it's not right. This is nothing about quality of care; I wasn't there, but I hope they took good care of him. This is an administrative issue, a very serious criticism relative to ownership and management. It is however not at all intended as a referendum on the actual medical and customer service staff, people who likely work in medicine to actually take care of people (and God bless them for that!).

Our experience with Mat-Su Midwifery was extremely disappointing, and ultimately we chose to…read moretransfer our care elsewhere. Throughout the pregnancy, we felt that important concerns were not handled appropriately. We were repeatedly pressured toward interventions and a hospital birth that my wife did not want, despite her wishes being clearly communicated. Rather than feeling supported, we felt that fear and worst-case scenarios were emphasized without taking the time to fully evaluate her individual situation. One of our biggest frustrations involved the referral to a dietitian for gestational diabetes management. We were told the referral had been sent, but when I contacted the dietitian directly, they confirmed they had never received it. Only after I followed up with the midwifery office again was the referral actually sent. Once we were able to meet with the dietitian, my wife was placed on a continuous glucose monitor, and her gestational diabetes has been exceptionally well managed, with readings consistently within normal ranges. That experience reinforced for us the importance of obtaining a second opinion. We were also concerned that recommendations were being made without a physician ever physically examining my wife. We felt decisions were being made based on incomplete information rather than an individualized assessment. After switching providers, we immediately noticed a significant difference in the quality of care. We felt listened to, respected, and included in decisions about my wife's pregnancy instead of being treated like just another patient. This was our experience, and I would strongly encourage anyone receiving care here to advocate for themselves, ask questions, and seek a second opinion if something doesn't feel right. I went to Alaska Sleep Clinic, which from what I understand, is a double-joint: one section has the independent doctor's office (whom ASC routinely works with, regarding referrals and what not) and then the sleep clinic. So, if you walk up to reception and change an appointment or have to do billing, they have to call someone else in the doctor's office for you to speak to. Somewhat confusing. Anyway, I was waiting to see the doc. And waiting. And waiting. It had been 30 minutes since my appointment time. I asked the woman at the desk what was up, and she dialed me through another secretary. I urgently let her know I had to be somewhere, and I wanted to know what was going on. She said that if I didn't get seen within 15 minutes, to reschedule. Oooookay. There were all of three people in the waiting room, and I had been one waiting the longest? What's the point of an appointment? Finally, the door popped open and a man called out my name, and almost immediately disappeared. I was flustered. Did he see me? Was he waiting for me? Usually medical folk will make eye contact or acknowledge that you heard them. I stood at the door for at least a couple minutes, wondering if I had to wait for him. The receptionist told me to walk through, and I let myself in. Dr. Krehlik was in the hallway, looking impatient. He didn't introduce himself, did none of that brief, professional formality. All he had me do was follow him into a tiny room, told me to get on the scale and call out my weight to him. Had me sit down, and he filled out the *exact* same pre-survey that I had received in the mail. He was frenetic, and he was firing out questions in rapid succession, scribbling all over the paper. I felt extremely stressed, like I had the audacity to waste his time. I said as much as I could, as fast as I could, in order to make sure I could cover all my symptoms in the short time I feel I was allocated. I literally saw him for less than seven minutes, and got the diagnosis I needed. A couple months later, I've received my doctor's visit bill. I owe my co-pay, but then I saw what my insurance covered. The entire appointment was $330. If I had to pay that much out of pocket, for a disinterested, outright rude and snarky doctor that I barely had time to even voice all of my concerns to, I would be more furious than I already am. I can't believe that the office charges such outrageous prices to insurances. I am so disgusted and horrified by his (lack of) service, and insurance-sapping service charge, I have yet to fulfill my appointment at ACS. I don't know if I want to go to a place that is affiliated with this man.
