I rarely review small retail businesses on Yelp as I know how greatly it may affect their…read morereputation. However, I had such an abysmal experience in Twigs that I felt that it needed to be shared. My besties (all brown girls) and I came in on a rainy Thursday while we were waiting for a table at the nearby Pickle Jar. When we entered this apparently darling shop, there was already a Caucasian customer who was attentively being served and catered to quite meticulously. We roamed around for a little while, discovering all the adorable knick knacks, artworks, and offerings. One of my girls decided to purchase a little plush animal for a friend's baby, and a unique vase. She came to the counter before the customer who was being helped had finished browsing, yet the attendant told her to wait until she had completed her transaction with the Caucasian customer. After ringing said customer up, and while checking out the items for my friend, she didn't make eye contact. She didn't thank her for her purchase, and she didn't tell us to come again. In fact, in retrospect, she didn't attend to us or greet us at all - fairly odd for a small business in a small space. When we left, we felt unwelcome and my friend regretted her purchase. Now every time she looks at that vase, she won't think of the creativity of the Cape Cod artist or how much fun we had on our trip, she'll think about how the attendant made her feel uncomfortable because of her skin color. The woman in the shop should feel ashamed of herself - and not operate a business that is unable to welcome anyone - in spite of their creed, color, or orientation.

I went in here just planning on browsing but walked out with a few items for my house and a few…read moregifts. I wasn't expected to find such a well thought out selection. Most of the items had a coastal theme and the pricing did tend towards higher, but that is to be expected on Main Street in Falmouth. In addition to items for the home, there is jewelry and a few bath items. It's definitely worth a look if you are in the area.

BLUF: Lovely kitchen and home store featuring higher end items and gifts…read more LeRoux Kitchen is a stunning, inspiring store packed with high-end kitchen gear, fun gadgets, gourmet foods, and more. Like a better version of Williams-Sonoma or Sur La Table, it offers small-business charm and greater variety. From cookbooks and aprons to chocolate, glassware, and cutting boards, they have everything for the kitchen and tabletop, beautifully displayed with a well-stocked inventory. The Martha's Vineyard store is one of several locations in the New England area.

This store is VITAL to the kitchens of Martha's Vineyard! It's been here for many, many years, and…read morefor a reason: They carry the best, most complete and affordable selection of kitchenwares on the island! You can both get a $5 mug here and an expensive Le Creuset French Oven here, with everything in between. The selection includes a lot of white dishware, Le Creuset cooking items, lobster-themed dishes and serverware, a huge selection of coffee mugs with very reasonable price tags on them, cooking utensils, kitchen appliances, napkins, tablecloths, you name it! The one (major) drawback to this store is that they are NOT WHEELCHAIR-ACCESSIBLE and have a large front step, as well as a tall flight of stairs inside. It would be nice if they put a doorbell by their entrance so that someone in a wheelchair requiring assistance could let the people at the register know to come to the front door. Even nicer would be if they got an inexpensive, foldable metal ramp off of Amazon to put out in order to accommodate their wheelchair-using would-be customers. However, they WILL help someone out at the front door if they notice you there. I give them a little more leeway than I would for a business off-island, because on Martha's Vineyard, there just aren't a lot of options for well-stocked, affordable kitchenware stores. There's not much else to say, other than the usual Martha's Vineyard caveat: call ahead to double-check their hours, especially in the off-season. This is an excellent store, and I recommend it to anyone looking for kitchenware or a little island kitsch on the Vineyard!

Another friend tried to get in touch with the person who bought the Corgi to find out where it came from, but never received a response. Since I live on the South Shore, I decided to take a trip down the Cape to try to track the stuffed Corgis down myself. I made a list of potential stores and took a drive down. The first place I tried, The Uptown Dog, had a lot of dog things, but no stuffed animals. The second place, Twigs, was on Main Street and, while there were a lot of souvenirs, no stuffed animals. I decided to take a look at some of the other stores to see if I had any success. I found a place two doors down from Twigs, the Homespun Garden. I walked in and looked and I immediately found what I was looking for. The Cape Cod Corgis were in a basket across from the register. I picked out three: One for myself, one for a hostess gift, and one for a friend who asked me if I would send one to her. When I went to the register, I saw Cody, the store mascot and inspiration for the little Cape Cod Corgis. I talked Corgis with the owner, paid, and went home happy that my mission had been successful. Now all my Corgi-loving friends know where to stop if they happen to find themselves on the Cape. The Homespun Garden is a very nice little gift shop and you can find a lot there. They sell the Cape Cod driftwood signs, cutting boards, and other Cape Cod-related gifts. I think I might return very soon to do my Christmas shopping and try to find some nice items for my family and (non-corgi fan) friends.
