This was my first escape room and I had a ton of fun! We did the Sorcerer's Secret, which was challenging! I totally don't remember the name of our game master, but I felt that she wasn't really watching what we were doing, because when we asked for clues, she mentioned things that we already did at first. Also we had to take a few minutes to explain why a clue wasn't working, which ate into our time. Despite that, we still escaped with 10 minutes to spare! My friends and I came here for "the shed" escape room and had so much fun. The room had our hearts pounding because we were locked in a shed of a murderer! Our game master, Jenna, did a really great job of redirecting us with clues if we were super far off and we escaped within one hour. The room was so well put together and each of the clues built off of each other. You'll have to be prepared to navigate through smaller spaces though. Definitely recommend coming here with your friends for celebrations and events. It ends up being about $35 per person and the room can have about 10 people. There's plenty of parking in the area. Outbreak It was fun. I've been to several different escape rooms companies / locations, and they're all different escape ideas. Being each game is somewhat unique, it's hard to say it was good or bad. Our game was called Outbreak in which we were in a lab setting and clues were in the Periodic table and beakers. The location here is a bit off the main area (Golf Road) but it's a decent facility. I'd recommend giving it a try. read more

Went to Mastermind on a team building event. We did the Sorcerer's secret. The host was totally in character so that's always fun. I thought it was a challenging good time. We had a pretty good team and the mysterious voice did give us some clues and help - but not too much to discourage us in game play. We did have some issues with the count down clock stopping partly into the game (but - hey... unofficially* we might not have escaped if it were not for that). I thought it was adequately challenging and the elements were unique as we tried to figure out how to get out. Very good variation. Was pleased we escaped with only a minute remaining. I did think that finding the actual master mind business location is challenging from my nav - as it's located in a semi-industrial office park. **Please note that the Mastermind is the 2nd level so take the stairs up, and do not disturb the business that's on the first level. read more

CODEBREAKER You'll need agile fingers and a quick wit to conquer this Schaumburg escape room. Per a suggestion from Jason K, we booked a fun double date at Mastermind on the afternoon of 2/24/19. It was my second time doing a time-sensitive room, so I was eager to see what sort of puzzles they'd have up their sleeve. Finding this place was tricky. It's buried in an industrial part of town, far from the popular restaurants and shops of Woodfield. You'll definitely need G-Maps to find it, as signage isn't very prominent and the entrance -- a side door -- is tucked away from the street. We arrived a bit late (someone told me it's fashionable) but entered the "Find the Cure"/laboratory room shortly after the 60:00 countdown timer started. Our fearsome foursome joined another quartet, and we got down to business. With 8 people frantically opening drawers and punching in keycode combinations, things got a bit hectic but the stress levels never reached a boiling point. The rando's we got matched up with were nice people (and pretty helpful too), so that didn't bother us at all. Photos aren't allowed in the rooms themselves, but I can say that "Outbreak" is a hodgepodge of science and does more to test your patience of spinning tumblers, than it does knowledge of chemistry or biology. Having a high school diploma does help, however. There's periodic tables, glass beakers, chemical formulas written on the wall (that may or may not be a red herring) and various other pieces of lab equipment strewn around the room. A large TV monitor displays the time remaining and any hints the game master provides. Though I liked the usage of different types of locks (including a really cool directional push lock I've NEVER seen before), there were far too many possible 4-digit combinations and 6-digit keypads. Which one to use? "F*ck if I know, try 'em all." The clues fed to us were mostly puns with a tiny hint, but as the countdown clock crept closer to 00:00, the hints became less clever and more to-the-point. Right around the 2-minute warning, they literally typed out "USE THIS CODE: ____", which was hilarious. I really appreciated that they added more time to the clock in an effort to let us solve more riddles, instead of just letting it run out and leave everyone (more) disappointed. At the end, the gamemaster explained where we went wrong and how to unlock the missing pieces. In terms of an immersive escape room experience, Mastermind is a step below Fox in the Box but it also costs a bit less at $28 per person (compared to FitB's $35pp). This place currently has 4 unique rooms, and I'd definitely want to return to try again! * TL;DR * When all's said and done, I thought the sheer number of locks was excessive and the story too non-linear. Even for a total math nerd like myself, getting to the end goal was a wee bit frustrating. I don't feel too bad, since only 20% of folks successfully escape the Laboratory room (1 in 5). I'd recommend Mastermind, especially for group dates, birthday parties, or work outings. It's a lot of fun and they really put your critical thinking skills to the test. Be sure to warm up those fast fingers beforehand..... you'll need to be on top of your game! read more

My daughter kept asking me if they could come back and try it again. Booked the "Bank Heist" on a Saturday night which they said was probably the most difficult of the 4 escape room themes. I was the parent sitting in the lobby and I could hear them screaming and laughing through the walls the whole time, always a good sign. Easy-to-navigate website, clear instructions. This place is such an awesome time! There are five different rooms here that you can choose from, and they have different difficulty levels. When you walk in, they have some locks and riddles/hints right when you walk into the lobby so that you can practice them and get a taste for how the locks will be in the room. I came here with my cousins, my boyfriend, and my aunt and uncle a few months ago, and we did the Bank Heist escape room. My boyfriend and I never did an escape room before, but everyone else did, so we were the newbies. My cousin picked this room because it is the hardest one here apparently... Anyways, there were some times we got stuck, but honestly, we did so well. We were in the last part of the room but just couldn't figure it out before the hour was up. The rooms accommodate 10 people, and we had 7, but it was still loads of fun. It seriously gets your adrenaline pumping and it will make you so angry and confused at times. There was this one part of our room where we had to detonate a "bomb" and we had specific instructions to follow, and when it "blew up" I freaked out because there was that much adrenaline in my system. Of course, nothing really even happened, but in my imagination it did! The funny thing about this room was that we didn't even find some of the clues, but we were guessing certain passcodes because you can tell which numbers were pressed and worn down. Honestly, you learn a lot about each other in those 60 minutes. I want to try going with my boyfriend one day so we can be with a bunch of strangers. I think that would be loads of fun, too. Although we didn't make it all the way through, the girl who was watching us the whole time came out and showed us what we missed or what we were doing wrong. That is another cool thing about this place because if the worker who watches you knows that your group is having a very hard time finding something and it is taking a long time, the worker will flash a hint on the tvs in the room to guide you. Then, when our hour was up, they give you signs that either said you made it or you didn't so they can take your picture... I will be back very soon! read more

Locked in a room with some strangers for 60 mins, yeah anything can happen! It was a trip and lots of fun. Loads to solve, unlock, puzzles, riddles, buttons, secret doors, switches, and more. We tried the lost in time room. In the beginning it was like every man for themselves running moving all over the room, until we got into the second room which was the future, where we started to be more cohesive and work as a team together. At the end, with 2 minutes to spare TADA we figured it out and solved the puzzle. We were no long lost in time! Fun times for all, good bonding event for everyone. Tip for beginners, checkout the level of difficultly before selecting a room. We were lucky being our first time, we had someone in the group with experience as the leader. read more

And based on her demeanor you could tell she was having a bad day or she was possibly just rude. And everybody has to start somewhere, so we were patient; however it was evident from her clue delivery and dialogue that she was just very rude/condescending... which is not fun for an escape room which was really disheartening because we have continuously supported Mastermind and gone to all their rooms. read more

Mastermind Escape Games are hard!!! They told us the success rate is 8-15% -- My goodness! We booked four rooms for our company party and none of us escaped from our rooms. I was in the Bank Heist room and it honestly sounded like we had the coolest concept after talking to the other groups. I don't want to ruin things for you but this may be the room to book! You won't break out though...well I guess you may...but man, is it hard! We all had a fun time and I would love to do an escape room at Masterminds again. I guess they only downfall in booking is you have to set he number of people when you book the rooms. We had no idea how many people would RSVP when we booked so did our max number of 40 and sadly had to pay for 40 even though only 28 showed up, ah well. Nothing you can really do about that I suppose. Other than that, the booking process was fairly smooth and the staff was fairly good, as well. The only bad aspect of the experience was after going, they couldn't find the photos of our group when we finished. They didn't reply to my emails for awhile, passed me from person to person, then finally said they had too many photos & have been too busy. Um...what?! We escaped from the Outbreak room! Was a fun experience, though it seems like all escape rooms are generally pretty similar. Nothing too special and unique, but nothing disappointed either. Can't say too much about the the actual room itself or I'll ruin the surprise for others. The people who designed the rooms and clues itself are pretty creative. Staff here was nice and patient with us. The building itself is a little eerie. Our wives said they were a little scared walking through the hallways to find the women's bathroom and had a little trouble finding their way back, ha. Now, finding the building itself...first task to defeating the escape games. We had a lot of trouble finding the place. Google maps didn't bring us to the right place. They sent a map via email beforehand (which shows that lots of people probably have trouble finding them), but we were still a bit lost and had to call them. read more

My coworkers and I came here this afternoon for our annual holiday party. None of us had ever been to an escape room before, so we didn't really know what to expect. The five of us were a little slow to start, but got into a groove about 20 minutes into the game. The game Master (is that what he/she is called?) has the ability to feed you more and more clues on the tv screens in the rooms. They're watching (and listening to :) you the entire time through the security cameras. If you get stumped they can assist. At the beginning of the game we also opted to read several bonus hints afforded to us on the tablet they give you (should you need assistance). Even with the extra clues from the tablets our 60 minute timer ran out. We had a lot of fun. I highly recommend Mastermind. There are multiple rooms with different levels of difficulty. You never have to escape the same room twice. Staff were super helpful and friendly; Kristen, Johnathan & Will. Mastermind is located in an industrial part of Schaumburg, so you might miss it if you aren't paying attention. Crazy parking when the place is super crowded. read more

Room: Bank Heist # people: 6 adults Escape: successful at 55 minutes Pros: easy to find, great scenarios, realistic environment, fun technology and locks, challenging but reasonable puzzles. Cons: no elevator for those that are handicapped Price: Approximately $20-$35/person depending on total number and/or coupons. We researched many escape rooms in the area and selected this one after finding a coupon on Groupon. Our group consisted of 6 adults and we selected the Bank Heist scenario. It was listed on the website as "very challenging" with only a 17% success rate. We all love puzzles and wanted the challenge. The room had 10 slots, but we only reserved 6, so there was a possibility of the other 4 slots being filled by strangers. However, when we arrived we were told that we had the room to ourselves! The location was easy to find and the building was marked with a large orange sign "Mastermind". There are plenty of signs to help guide pedestrians after parking. It is located on the second floor and there are no elevators. The lobby area is where the customers wait for their session to begin. This is where the employees will provide a briefing about the rules of the game. All customers are required to sign a consent form agreeing to the video recording within the rooms. The security camera footage is monitored while you solve the puzzles so that the game masters can provide clues/hints and ensure players abide by the rules. There are restrooms. The Bank Heist was challenging, but not in a frustrating way.... there was plenty for us 6 to do all at the same time without getting in each others way. We were great at communicating and working as a team to solve the puzzles. In the end, we escaped from the room with only 5 minutes to spare!! They told us the success rate was actually only 13%, but we completed it victoriously!!!! In conclusion, we had a really fun time and loved the environment, storyline, technology used, special effects, and puzzles. We will definitely come back to try out the other rooms! read more

My family and friends and I had a blast! It was our first 1 hour escape room (hubs and I did a 20 minute room at Stratford Mall), so we were all pretty psyched. When you walk in, they have fun music playing and some ganes to play while you wait. They explained the rules well, and explained our room's theme. They don't give you much to start with, so we were all walking around the room for a bit, searching for anything that could point us to something helpful. But once we got started, we blazed right through. We chose "Lost in Time," which had a fun old saloon feel, but then also a futuristic feel as well. You'll see what I mean. It took us 35 minutes to complete. They said we were one of the fastest groups to go through that one! So now we're all itching to try the "Bank Heist," since it is more difficult and we love a good challenge! They gave us $10 off coupons, to come back again, for posting our "we made it" group photo to Facebook and "checking in" at their location. Great way to get repeat customers! We would have done another room that same night if one were available! So, a few in our group had to settle with playing with the sample clues/tiny locked doors in the waiting room. Nice touch! This place was a big disappointment, not once, but twice. We were here in January for a visit and we're unable to complete the clues because as it turns out, there was an intrical tool that wasn't left in the room and other important clues had been painted over. After discussing our inability to complete the tasks, the staff pointed out to us why that was. Graciously they invited us to return and go through a different room on the house. Alas this time, on our return visit there were malfunctioning equipment in the room that inhibited us from completing the maze yet again. Even the staff were unable to get the equipment to function properly and make the room apparatuses function as needed in order to experience the full effects. Rubbing salt in the wound when this was all brought to light afterwards they told us that they'd mark us down in the system as "completing the mission". Who cares? The rooms appear to be well thought out and much time and creativity was employed by the builders, but maintenance isn't something that's high on their priorities list. read more
