Besides how fun the Sorcerers Secret room was, I was so impressed by how helpful and accommodating the staff were when i needed to reschedule. My kids were freaked out by the idea of being locked in a room (!?!) so I postponed until they were ready. I'm grateful that the manager was willing to change my date with enough advance notice.They ended up having so much fun and it was a great time bonding as a family! Highly recommended for a couples date night, family time or birthday party. Easy to get to off of the highway and there are some restaurants nearby to stop at afterwards. It was challenging enough to make us think, but not so hard that we felt like giving up. We got out with three minutes to spare! We will be back to try one of the 3 other rooms. read more

I booked a room for myself and my two teens. We showed up abut 15 minutes early (on time). They gave us a great pre-brief with an overview of the various locks. They also give you a tablet that is specific to the room that allows you to control when you get certain clues and keep track of how many you get. It was just the three of us for the room so I was about nervous about being able to complete it. There were plenty of challenges to keep us busy, lots of different locks and lots of different types of puzzles. We were able to escape and it was a great time! I came here for a Yelp event and now I can't stop talking about it. It's in the basement of a "WE BUY GOLD" store. but do not let that deter you. The waiting area is clean and well thought out. Once inside your room the hour will fly buy. They give some tools such as a writing board and iPad to work through the clues. But your team has to work together to escape. They also watch you on video and listen to your conversations if you are extremely close on a clue they just might give some assistance. FYI We didn't even come close to escaping. My friends and I had a blast at Mastermind Escape Games! We had been hoping to do an escape room to celebrate one of my friend's birthdays but everything seemed to be out of our price range. I came across Mastermind and noticed a 20% discount which made the room much more affordable. It's way out there (in reference to downtown Kansas City) at 151st and 69 Highway, but it was worth it. When you enter you walk down what seem like some questionable stairs and enter into a very well lit and fun room. From there you fill out your forms and off you go! The setup of the room was great and we ended up making it out with 7 minutes to spare. The employee watching us gave us some helpful hints when we were stuck but not too many that we couldn't say we did it on our own. Very friendly people and a fun environment! read more

Mastermind Escape Games is so much fun! We went for the first time almost a year ago for my birthday and we went back around the holidays because my parents were visiting and they have never done an escape room before. The first time we went, we did the room called "outbreak" where we had to find a cure for a medical disease. That one has about a 30% passing rate and we completed it without any help or hints and had 15 minutes left. This time we did the "bank heist" room which has about a 20% passing rate. It was definitely a lot more challenging. The person watching us gave us a bit more help than we had hoped for. We like a good challenge. The first time we went the person didn't give us any clues at all. We used all of our clues and completed it with 4 minutes left. I've been to several escape rooms, including in other states. This is mediocre. We had a party of 6, and still had 3 others join us in a very small room. The game itself was fun, and we were able to complete it. There was one step were we thought we may have to screw in the lightbulb to make it work. We were not being destructive or disrespectful to property. We immediately hear over the intercom "any further tampering will result in ejection of the game. Just leave it alone." Unnecessary and rude. You lack communication skills my dear. A simple "please do not touch the lamp, that is not how it turns on" would have worked. There was also an older gentleman, in the group of three that joined us, that simply asked if there was something missing. (He thought there should be one more item than there was displayed). This same employee in a very condescending and irritated tone replies "Nope. It's intentional." All I can think is that this employee was already having a bad day well before we showed up, because the level of attitude we received was ridiculous. This was my first time doing an escape room, and I had alot of fun! We chose the easiest room, called "lost in time". You get an iPad and a little notepad to take with you into the room, the iPad has clues on it that you can use your points to pay for the clues! You have 60 minutes to get out of the room, but if you think that is plenty of time you're wrong! We had a group of 5 people and we did not get out within the time frame. You have to think fast and make a team effort to get to the next step, because some of them require more than one person. Overall the room we were on was pretty decent, it's set up like an western old saloon. The employee was very informative and when we didn't make it out, he came in and showed us the remaining steps it took to get out. The only reason I am not giving 5 stars, is because some of the props inside the room seemed kind of torn up, or like they may need to be made a little better. Some of the things on the wall looked like maybe another customer had tried getting into them or something, when they shouldn't have been yanked on/open, etc. Other than that though it was a great time and I'm excited to try a different room another time! read more

This place is a hidden gem in Overland Park. The building is deceiving, as it shares rent with a gold buyer, and the doors to both places are shared. Once you enter you go through the Mastermind door and head downstairs into the spacious basement! You'll walk out into the lobby where you will be pleasantly greeted for your adventure. We opted to do Lost in Time and had a large enough group (9) that we purchased the private event. It was a lot of fun, and I won't spoil any surprises but they have some options to make it easier - like QR codes you can scan to get hints and a helpful "liaison" watching you from cameras in the room who will offer guidance as necessary should your group get severely stuck. Unfortunately a key element in our puzzle was inadvertently misplaced which caused a huge challenge for us to finish solving the clues. Many of them are dependent on you solving other mysteries, so in this case we couldn't actually escape the room (we solved half of the challenge). They were very apologetic about the situation and made up for it which all of us greatly appreciated. We still had a lot of fun and I'd definitely recommend this to anyone who likes puzzles. We had younger kids in the group - 11 and 12. I wouldn't go too young if you want any help out of them, being able to read is a big plus! read more

Mastermind is in the basement of a cash for gold place, which initially was a little concerning to me. We had a coupon, and decided to go for it. We ended up having a ton of fun with Sorcerer's Secret, and went back and did Bank Heist as well. Both rooms were good, but I think I liked Sorcerer's Secret a bit better. The Bank Heist is in a room designed to look like... a bank (duh)... and it just felt a little plain to us. Overall our group enjoyed both rooms, and we will be going back to finish the other two rooms they have at some point. read more

A group of 12 of us were celebrating a friend's birthday and tackled the "Bank Heist" Escape Room and escaped in the nick of time! When we drove into the lot at night, we were a little apprehensive because you enter through a door with "We Buy Gold" decal all over. There is a second door inside for Mastermind which is downstairs. The waiting area is pretty fun because they have a wall with some locks for your groups to tackle as you wait and some brainteaser toys to play with. (Remember to use the sanitizer!) In terms of the room, there were a mixture of puzzle mechanisms that made it fun but felt like some puzzles could not be solved without the hint. Utilize the hints! It doesn't count against your time. We were a bit upset because the room wasn't "reset" correctly and the door just kind of latched open to the second segment of the game so the game master had to stop us and fix it. Also, they allow up to 12 people into the room but wow, it was crowded!!!! Plus, there's not enough things to interact with so some people had to sit on the sides and watch at times which is not fun. I think the ideal number will be 8 if I had to do it again. read more

I went at night time to do the Lost in time game. It said moderate difficulty. I've done two other escape rooms and I am up for a challenge. The staff wasn't very helpful or available and the instructions were very awkwardly delivered and a bit unclear. The staff walked out of the room and turned out the light for some reason. We stood in the dark wondering what was going on. The room itself was okay. It was super hot, but well decorated. I have done other escape rooms and found them better organized. The game clues seemed very discombobulated and it was very unclear for some of the instructions. The stuff we discovered seemed out of order and the clues on this one area were so tiny that it was impossible to see in the dim lighting. The locks got stuck so needless to say, we lost the game. When we lost, the staff came in and was like, times up. And just gave away the rest of it and rushed us out of there. The other place I went to we got to finish the puzzles with hints even though we went over time so we still felt fulfilled. For as much as it costs per person it was very disappointing that they didn't let us finish the game with the staff in there to guide. They should have also given away several free clues instead of discounting 5 minutes off each time you scanned a QR code. Overall it was eh. Tick Tock escape games that I went to was better. This place might be more enjoyable at an earlier time and in a larger group to solve the amount of puzzles in there.
