I thought the puzzles were shockingly hard, I would be surprised if someone can get out of them the first time with zero hints! We have done every escape room there is to do in K.C. this one as soon as you walk in, you can tell the staff doesn't want to be there and that it isn't going to be a fun experience. The lobby is filled with all of the anticipation of a dentist's office. Entering the room, there's barely any story or starter video to put you into the experience. You're barely allowed to touch anything; the entire room is covered in Do Not Touch stickers leaving you feeling unsure whether any action is going to break the room. Several of the puzzles needed someone to be tall enough to reach up high, which would have made it impossible for kids or shorter people to complete. The puzzles feel random and arbitrary. If anything, the clues you're presented with in the room actively steer you away from the answer. If you ask for a hint, they basically just give you the next code outright. Even after asking the attendant for an explanation of the last puzzle, we were left feeling like there was no way anybody would work that out on their own. read more

Escape Rooms are always reliable fun, but I recommend that Escape Room KC do a refresh and upgrade. My friends and I did the "A Dream" escape room, and it felt like it'd seen better days. Some of the puzzle pieces and clues were worn and nearly broken, or dirty and grimy. I wasn't a huge fan of some of the puzzles either - there was one clue that felt like quite a stretch - and not in a good way. We did ultimately escape but had to rely quite a bit on the clues. On another occasion, I had done 221B Baker St., and that one was a bit higher quality. I'd definitely recommend 221B Baker St. over A Dream. Staff was nice and helpful. No complaints there. Pricing is redonk - but I guess that is what the going rate is these days. It is insult to injury to pay for the parking garage. Overall, I've had better experiences in Escape Rooms at the Breakout franchise. But Escape Room KC is a fine way to spend an afternoon, especially if you want to be in the downtown area. You can easily hop on the street car for a meal or other entertainment in the area. read more

So first and foremost I've been to other Escape Games in other states. Now we did the Sherlock Homes one and this is the first one that we have done at this facility and possibly the last. This escape game room and probably the other rooms has some slight concerns when you are doing a comparison. First it's missing immersion - when the game-master just speed-talks through the scenario, I honestly didn't even know what my motive was. Other Escape Rooms have you watch something with a high production value to give you the scenario of who, what, why of your situation. The walls were bland and empty in the room. Definitely missing that 'it' factor. Also they need to redo the intercom system - everyone shouldn't have to be quiet or run to the intercom to hear the game-master. There should be numerous speakers in the ceiling - like a PA system - like a 'higher being' is watching you. When it came to the puzzles - in the back room - where there is black light, unfortunately there is an red emergency exit light that has nothing to do with the game that overpowers the black light and the writing that it is trying to light up. No bueno. Not only that - one of the puzzles is math word problem. Like one of those 6 sentence math problems that you had to complete in 8th grade. There is nothing that kills a vibe more than going from frantically running around to everyone sitting down and watching someone with a pen and paper try to complete a math problem. I can't say that we won't be back, but we will definitely check out the other Escape Rooms in the immediate area before we do. read more

Gave this place a try late Sunday evening. I was surprised to find them open inside Union Station when everything else in the area was closed. We did "A Dream" as a team of four. The room we started in was spacious enough that even a group of six or more can move and not feel crowded. The props in the room seemed average until you realize that the room is flipped over and you are (for the story line) walking on the ceiling. We had 60 minutes to awake from the craziness or else.... There were actually two different formats for clues which moved us along. The first was a tablet that automatically updated every five minutes to give a brief, not too helpful, hint that basically let you know where you should be in the process of solving the room. Sort of letting you know you are ahead of behind. Then there was the standard 3 clues with the walkie talkie. Most of the puzzles seemed to flow easily into the next one. There were still a few where the stress of the moment cost us from thinking straight. All-in-all it was a good puzzle that would probably challenge some beginners and seem easy for experts. read more

Everyone brings a different point of view to the table when you are trying to solve the mystery. I did the Secret Agent room with my family. I have done several other escape rooms before and this one was in the bottom 3 for me. The rooms you're in wasn't air conditioned so they have a fan going for you but... what is a fan? It blows the same air already in there. Get a swamp cooler or something. The rooms itself was a little lacking in decor and I think it needs to be more elaborate-looking, cleaned up, and honestly...they should play some music while you're in there. I will say that most of the rooms I have really liked have been SUPER decorated so it feels like you're really in another world and they've all played a little background music in the room to help set the mood. I booked an escape room for my son's joint birthday party. Then we found out both my parents and one of my sons had Covid. The staff offered me a credit which seemed fine since I go to escape rooms alot. Three weeks later my dad died from Covid-19 so it took us a while to rebook and by then the river market location was closed and they couldn't find my credit. They told me to send them my email proving I had a credit but they gave me the wrong email. I looked up the right email address and forwarded the credit. I was told I'd hear back soon. I didn't hear anything for days so I called again. The person I spoke with said he still hadn't heard from his manager but that he got my email. He gave me my room options and then I picked Sherlock Holmes room because I'm a big fan. I have his complete works and have read them all. Then he gave me my time options. We choose this week to use the credit because it was my birthday and so we had a big day of fun stuff lined up for the whole family. When we got to the escape room they showed us into a room that looked nothing like Sherlock theme. The staff refused to admit they had made a mistake. They offered for us to return at 9 pm or to roll the dice and try booking again with our credit. The staff called the manager and said he agreed to speak to me but immediately after he hung up they gave me his number and he refused to answer. Most of the time I was there the staff set there staring at me and the one who would speak to us refused to even apologize. The only option is a store credit to go back to a place that has already screwed up and not taken any responsibility and treated my family of 6 like shit. Avoid this place like the plague if you don't want your events ruined. read more

The room's designs enabled the clues to be well hidden and although their group chose the easy level it still was very exciting and challenging. It took them 45 min. to escape! Called and spoke directly to a team member who explained the red shaded booking times were not available. Green shaded times indicated open spots. Parking is along the street. Lighting in that neighborhood is limited. A designated parking lot would be a plus for groups arriving separately. Facility is well lit and clean. Reception area is spacious enough for several small groups waiting for event rooms. Scott provided a clear description and guidance as we prepared for our event room. Perfect event for my 50th birthday party! The reason? I wanted to do something that people from 8 to 78 could equally enjoy, and this was the exact thing! My 78-year-old mother got to play with her great-grandchildren and all the rest and, while she had to sit through it, she STILL thought it was one of the best things ever! With so many people, we had two separate rooms (Da Vinci and Baker Street). We split up spouses and siblings, which was great as then, everyone could compare experiences! Had a large group of people (32) and wanted to go out for something other than bowling. We were able to reserve all the rooms for the same time. So, on top of the thrill of escaping, there was an element of competition. It was fantastic. Groups got out at different times so the smack talk was fun too (my group got done fastest :-) ). While a group needs to call ahead, it would be fun to drop in also to see if there's openings for less than 10 people. The workers were EXTREMELY nice and helpful. It was great walking through and asking about different elements in the room. I would highly recommend it and can't wait to go back. We went today and had so much fun! My husband and I had never tried an escape room before so we thought we'd give it a go. We did a little research at lunch, popped in after, and they had immediate availability at 4pm on a Wednesday. They gave us a brief description of the rooms and discussed success rates and difficulty levels we us. After talking it over with then they got us all set for Vinci room. We were told it's the easiest but still only held a 50% success rate. After giving us the rundown and the explaining in more detail how some things worked, our timer was started! It was probably pretty obvious that we were beginners because we got stuck hard a few times, but they came in over the intercom with vague hints that were just enough to make something click in our heads. Unfortunately we didn't beat it, but we were on the last clue so close they let us finish. We "escaped" in 60 minutes and 43 seconds. We will absolutely be back! read more

It was the first escape room for 2/3 of our group. We really enjoyed it. The girls at the front desk were great. The room we tried was the dream room at the union station location. We had a very difficult time understanding what was being said over the walkie talkie though. We asked for the last clue to be repeated and gave up trying to understand what was being said. The admission price was right around what other escape room charge and they offer 3 rooms ( easy, medium, and hard) We chose the easiest room since it was the kids first time (their all 14 yrs old) they were able to escape with 1 second to spare and they had a blast. They enjoyed the puzzles and I enjoyed it not being packed or having to wait in line ;) will return. read more

I have done multiple rooms here both for a team building event from work and as a family. All groups enjoyed and I would recommend probably 8th Graders and above for being alone in a room. Went for a work team building event, using two different rooms; Prison Break and Secret Agent. It was an absolute freakin' blast! I was in the latter room. We were not successful. The other group was! It was really fun to solve the puzzles and see how bizarrely everything came together. I won't give any spoilers, but will tell you things are not always as they appear. I rated 4/5 stars due to their cost claim. They say "for the price of a movie" do this instead. So what one hour movie costs $23 for one ticket? Seems a paltry thing to say after talking about how fun it was, but business is business. read more

What a great experience! Had my family in town and decided to book the Da Vinci room, since they love history and mystery, haha. Staff were super-friendly and explained everything about how it all works. The room itself was very authentic to the theme and certainly very puzzling. A screen on the wall gives you hints every 5 minutes (and 2 extra hints during your hour) if you need them...which we did. Sadly, we did not solve the room and it left us feeling very "defeated" for a large portion of the day. The member of staff came in at the hour and explained the unsolved puzzles for the room- the collective moment where we all kick ourselves as it seemed so obvious. The ONLY issue I had was with one of the intricate puzzles. Obviously no spoilers here, but they told us beforehand not to force anything that clearly could break the elements of the room. However one of the mini-puzzles had me use excessive force to complete it. And after checking in twice with the "hint intercom", they said it was OK. (Hopefully people don't read this and go destroy the rooms now, haha!) All being said, we will be back. Part of me wishes they would give us the option of providing the answer(s), so we could come back another time and try to complete it. Ah well. Another room it is. Thanks Escape room! read more

Challenging but extremely fun. Went down with a group of friends and checked out the Mad Scientist room. They really make you think and check everything attention to detail and noticing coincidences are definitely helpful. The assistant will call in if they think you're stuck and the clues they offered were helpful. We got out juuuuuust before the allotted time and apparently there are rooms even harder than this.
