A somewhat underground phenomenon "escape rooms" are gaining traction as a family friendly and bonding experience unlike any other. The basic premise is you and a group enter into a room or series of rooms with little direction and you must find clues to solve puzzles in order to finish the adventure. The complexity and difficulty are explained to the participants before purchase allowing the experience to be customized based on comfort level. Now that we've established a groundwork of what an escape room is, I'll describe my experience. I flew in to Kansas City to see my 17 graduate and spend time with her and my 14 yr old. It's somewhat of a tradition of ours to do an escape room. My daughter did some searches and based on rating decided to give "The Exit Room" a shot. I'm not sure how prices stack up for other facilities and I thought they were a lot higher than others however it was worth it. The Exit Room's location is fairly easy to find, parking is plentiful and the location in a safe area. Walking in is pretty neat with several areas great for photo ops. The guide (sorry if that's not what the person is called) was pleasant greeting us and gave us a run down of all the things we needed to know. He guided us to our destination, wished us luck and shut the door. I don't want to give to much away but, in the room, there's a monitor in case you're in need of hints. You hold up a sign for help and the "guide" will assist via intercom. We did need one hint and I rather liked the ambiguity b/c it wasn't to the point of "press that button" rather, "look closely at the puzzle and notice the direction." The carefully crafted responses were given to not ruin the experience. The puzzles themselves varied in nature. A physical slide puzzle here, a series of puzzles with colors there and several puzzles that had clues fit into a larger puzzle. Basically, the rooms are meant to challenge both sides of the brain but patience is a virtue. After successfully completing a puzzle an audio/visual cue is given thus a small shot of dopamine hits the brain simulating reward. While not only indicating the current puzzle is complete, it reinvigorates hope and focuses your attention on the next obstacle. I can't recall exactly but I believe my 60-minute adventure had a total of 15 or so puzzles. The only small issue I had was with the final puzzle but I'm not going to divulge my irritation with the implementation of said puzzle. Overall, my girls and I enjoyed the experience. While I'm a very deep thinking my greatest experience came from letting my kids take ownership and watching my oldest child take over, demonstrating leadership, organization and analytical thinking. This is an interaction occasion not a sitting on the sofa type of atmosphere. The Exit Room provides the perfect adventure for those willing to challenge themselves and try something different. Such a fun escape room! We will definitely be back to do another! We did the FBI: alien themed escape room. It was ranked a 7/10 for level of experience. We got out with 6 minutes to spare and using one clue. My husband and I had done two escape rooms before which I think helped us have an idea of what to expect. They lock you in a room. You have an hour to get out. We did the Surgery room. We went in a group of six. They were a professional outfit and the place was decorated for the part. They lead off with a great story line then we worked feverishly to solve puzzles to get out. It was a lot of fun. I would do it again. BTW, we didn't get out. We made it to the last puzzle and got stuck. Suggestions for improvement: More theatrics. There needs to be sound effects or light changes when a puzzle is correctly solved. A lot of time is wasted between puzzles if you don't know if you've completed it correctly. Creepy effects would a huge bonus. Some of the puzzles were really obscure. A more clear relationship from puzzle to puzzle would still be challenging without being so tangential. Tip for future patrons: Use everything in the room. I mean everything. read more

We recently went to the Exit Room in Lee's Summit and did Midnight at Ravenloft. What we liked: the Exit Room really themes everything great starting in the lobby. The decorations and visuals are one of the best that we have seen. Review of Midnight at Ravenloft. This was a beautiful experience. Excellent theme and extremely immersive. This room was easy. Our group of 4 has done 14 escape rooms now, and this room was our easiest experience so far. The room is advertised with a 55 min avg escape time. We got out in 30 minutes. That was a little too short for the price of admission. This would be a fantastic room for beginners, but probably too light for experience escapers. read more

Highly recommend! My first time in a game room was at Breakout KC so I only have that for comparison. The Exit Room is by far superior! The overall game experience was much smoother which made for a more enjoyable experience. We were locked in Ravenloft. The clues were well played. The staff was welcoming and encouraging. I really felt like they cared about our time there. After we were through, they gave us a quick sneak peak at the other rooms. My family and I can't wait to come back! We want to try the Surgery room next. Their room fee is $150 + tax for 8 people, and you do have to book the entire room; we had 9 people so we paid extra. They won't take more people than that, but you wouldn't want to anyway. The room was a bit tight for 9 people - too many elbows - my face became a victim! I suggest 6 people as the ideal number. read more

We have tried several escape rooms in the Midwest and The Exit Room manages to stay fresh in an increasingly crowded industry. The staff was super friendly and we were digging on the steampunkish feel to the place. We did "The Surgeon," and managed to escape with roughly 8 min left. The first thing I noticed was that I swore up and down the commentator for the video in the room was Bob Saget, only to be assured later by the owners it was one of their sons. The puzzles were all pretty clever, some of them more so than other escape rooms I've been to. There were multiple facets to the room as well, meaning you weren't all crammed into one small room. As you progressed through puzzles, different areas opened up, which was definitely nice. I appreciate that you have to request clues here and that they penalize your time when you receive one. I've been to other places where I sometimes feel like we're onto something and a random clue gets thrown out to help us along. The challenge of doing it ourselves is one reason I really enjoy these types of things. We visited with family (8 adults) for some post-holiday fun. Half our group had done an escape room-type experience before. The whole experience, from booking to the lobby to the staff to the room experience itself (The Grey Project), was fantastic. We all had a great time and the room itself was top-notch. I highly recommend it! We visited the Exit Room in July as a family outing and did the Heist. Our group had six total although you can have eight per room. Personally I think six is the perfect number for a group so you are not tripping over each other. The staff was super friendly and room monitor was great. You get time added each time you ask for a clue but you do get one free question first. We only took one question and got out in 56 minutes. The clues were well placed and some were easier than others. It was fun to see who took the leadership role in the group as well. Purchased "The Heist" room for a 30th birthday party, and we absolutely loved it. I've done puzzle rooms at other companies in KC, and found the Exit Room to have a larger variety of puzzles in each room, including lock combinations, keys, visual puzzles, codes, and lots of out-of-the-box thinking. I went with a group of 8 (which is the max number of people allowed). I believe we went with 8 mainly to keep the cost per person as low as possible. I would not recommend going with more than 6. We had a lot of fun, although I think it was a bit pricey. read more

I have done two rooms now at The Exit Room. Both experiences have been wonderful. The staff have been courteous and helpful while our game experience was very fun. I fully plan to go back and do the remaining rooms in the future. This is a great night out for families or friends, large groups or small ones(and they won't pair you with people you don't know). Even if you don't break out quickly it is still really fun and you'll be talking about it for weeks. I highly recommend this to anyone wanting to push their brain or just wanting to try something different for a night out. Great fun! read more
