The unwillingness of the store manager to accommodate a refund of an unopened toy with the original receipt because it was over 30 days feels very customer unfriendly. Mastermind is a good place to go if you're stuck getting a birthday or Christmas present for someone else's kid(s) and have no idea what's in right this minute, let alone what the kid might actually want. Finding quality, old fashioned (i.e., non-electric) toys is tough, and this expanded Mastermind will give you some options. It's probably best for kindergarten to grade 3 or so, since the toys are a little too convoluted and "educational" for toddlers, and a bit too lame for budding preteens. I suspect some of the toys here (like the enormous stuffed elephant in the storefront display costing hundreds of bucks) are more likely to spoil a child than smarten him up. And I doubt the educational value of a Transformers chess set. But most of the stock is suitably high-minded. read more

I LOVE Mastermind Toys. You can always find really great quality toys and activities here - rather than the sea of junk you'd get at toys r us. There's always plenty of staff around busily cleaning up and organizing. They tend not to approach and ask if you need help but are always helpful if you do ask them. I was trying to buy a pink and purple digibird for my daughter's 3rd birthday. She has been asking for one and definitely knows what it is. Problem is - she was with me. I told the young man at the counter and advised that she CANNOT see it. He grabbed it, hid it in his pocket as he walked past her and wrapped it up for me. Then he placed it in a shopping bag so she wouldn't be all "ooo, what's in the wrapping paper?" and taped the plastic bag. Awesome. I like these guys. read more

Customer service quite decent, prices pretty good, quality of products also very decent. Same goes for prices. I've been to this store a few times, and I've found the staff to be quite helpful, offering assistance if they see you might need a hand. They also appear to be rather knowledgeable on their products. Their prices are decent, and quality of products as well as product selection are quite good. This isn't a huge store by any means, but it definitely has a very good selection of children's toys. Like someone mentioned previously, the free gift wrapping is definitely a very nice touch that they have at this chain. All-in-all, I'll definitely be returning to Mastermind whenever I'm in need of some kiddie toys for my nephews :-) read more

I usually love this store but today when me and my boyfriend went in right away we were glared at by an employee (an older woman with glasses) who proceeded to follow us around the store, thinking it was coincidence I went to one end of the store by the puzzles and she followed staring back. But when I waked back over by the legos she followed and stood right behind me. That is when I told my boyfriend we are leaving and she laughed at us. Absolutely disgusting! I work retail also, I know when someone looks suspicious you discreetly watch them. This was not the case! We were looking for a present for our niece and talking. What a fantastic selection of quality toys! I was visiting from New York City and wanted to pick up some gifts for my Canadian friends' children. We have nothing like this in New York and I must say I am hugely jealous. I quickly found gifts for my friends' baby, their toddler, and their kindergartner, and the very helpful staff did a nice job wrapping them up. I just wish they'd open a store in Brooklyn! read more

I have so many great memories of coming to this store as a kid. They always had toys and games set up for kids to play with while their parents shop. This was always a go-to place for my family if we needed children's playthings. I've gone in a few times as an adult to buy gifts for younger members of my family, and the atmosphere hasn't really changed. They even stock a lot of the same toys, books, and games, which is great. Another cool thing is that they wrap up your purchase for free in their own gender-neutral mastermind gift wrap. Oh, and they do an awesome job. Sub-level customer service. Mastermind often advertise items that actually aren't in stock. For orders online Mastermind promise 2-3 days delivery-but never ever deliver it in time. I have never been offered apology, they just say how busy they are, as excuse. If Mastermind is so busy, I am not gonna bother them again. read more

Over time - Mastermind Toys has become rather predictable. They still have great selection but it's hard to get service at least in this particular story even though there are many staff standing at attention in many locations of the store. They are the first to tell you what they are selling but not that helpful when you need assistance and at the cash this location gave me the impression that they really don't care if you shop there at all. it's too bad as in the past this store was a go to location when stuck for a gift and not sure what to get. We always found something and likely you still will. Unfortunately they seem to have moved across the line of complacency and you the customer are not that important - just leave your money thank you. I realized today that maybe it's time to look for something new and a bit more cutting edge in the local vicinity. When you are the only person in line and there are three people working cash but they are all too busy to actually serve you, it gives you time to reflect. They don't say thank you and in one case explained that they were "doing paperwork". This particular cashier was pretty smug and I couldn't figure out if she felt entitled or just didn't care. So perhaps another Mastermind location would be better or maybe just trying a different source of toys altogether for fresh and new ideas. read more
