My truck broke down suddenly down the street from the Master Wrench last week. We had it towed there, and they began working on it within a few days. After much testing and driving around, etc., the mechanic said he could not find a reason for the problem. He definitely could've charged us for the diagnostic work that he put in, but he said he would not charge because he could not diagnose the problem. That's amazing service, especially these days! I give Master Wrench a point for their billboard that reads "Hate creates a lot of problems It never solves them." It's a worthy message and I applaud them for displaying it, but other than their sign their performance deserves only one star. I have a Ford F150 that I bought used a couple months ago. When I called to make an appointment I said 1. the dashboard lights don't work and I would like them fixed, 2. there is a noise underneath when the truck starts rolling - I don't know if it's suspension or drive train but I would like a mechanic's opinion and 3. I don't know when it last had a tuneup, so check the spark plugs and whatever else goes into a tuneup. When I arrived with the truck the very rude guy at the counter said "so, you want an end to end inspection." I repeated what I said when I made the appointment and the guy argued with me. "You didn't say that. I took the call and I would have written it down" he said. OK, can you fix the dashboard lights? "Oh no, that takes hours and I didn't budget that much time." What about the noise? "The inspection includes a drive, so we will figure that out." When I came to pick up the truck I was told by a different guy at the counter that the noise was the differential and I should have it looked at right away because it might just be bearings but if I let it go too long it would have to be completely rebuilt. What about the spark plugs? They hadn't looked at them but replacing them would cost $750, and he gave me the name of a transmission shop they recommend for the differential. Wow! I then took the truck to Dane Motors on SE Powell for a second opinion. They found that there was nothing wrong with the differential. The noise was coming from a driveshaft bearing that would be expensive to replace and posed no safety issue. They recommended checking it again in another 30,000 miles or so. However, they also found that the front end had safety issues. The ball joints and one of the control arms were completely worn out to the point of being dangerous. I told them to fix it. They did and they showed me one of the ball joints they replaced. Even to a non-mechanic it was obviously shot. They threw in an alignment for free and when I asked "you didn't get to the dashboard lights did you?" David said "we took care of that as a courtesy." I asked what they did and he said they cleaned some electrical connections and added that it is a common problem with that model truck. So... I gave Master Wrench $150 for rude treatment, a misdiagnosis, and they did not see, in their end to end inspection, a dangerously worn out front end. I will not go there again. read more

I took my car in here after a horrible situation with a Honda dealer. They were incredibly nice to me even rotating the tires on the house as I had supposedly paid for that with my dealer service. I told them how much I appreciated that and that I would be back. I went back this week. I called to make an appointment for an oil change. The guy answering the phone said well we really don't make appointments but bring it in around 8 AM and we'll work around it. I said OK sounds good. Fast forward to Friday. I arrange to get someone to pick me up and I arrive a few minutes before 8 AM. There are at least three guys I can see through the window. They will not answer the door or the phone. They made me stand outside in the rain until it was 8:01 AM. I didn't say anything about it lest they take it out on my car. Then when I pick it up it was over $93 for a synthetic oil change. You've got to do better than this. I think I'll try someone else next time. They must have changed hands. read more

I was just in for a tail light replacement, I had been at one of the very large oil change companies that usually also changes out lights but they were not able to change my tail light. So I hopped over to this amazing local business and they took care of me lickity split. I much prefer going to local business over a large chain any day so I pretty much decided this is where I'll be doing all my car care in the future even oil changes. No fuss, no muss, very pleased with the service. Getting the spark plugs changed on a 2012 Versa is expensive at a dealer. The intake manifold has to be removed. They didn't find it, as the issue is intermittent and hard to replicate, but they were as honest as can be and despite not charging me a cent for the trouble, they spent real time trying to figure it out. I came in this morning looking for a quote to change out my engine coils and have my fuel injection system flushed. The rude, unkempt man sitting behind the desk seemed annoyed that his internet browsing had been interrupted. The first thing out of his mouth was, "we'll have to charge you to run a diagnosis." I told him I'd already had it diagnosed and just need a quote. "No one is going to give you a quote without charging for a diagnosis," he gruffly replied. Since I'd already gotten 2 this morning, I simply said, "that's not true" and walked out. I drove across the street to Mario's little shop and Mario himself came out and looked at & listened to my engine (old school). He told me what was wrong in 3 minutes (confirming what other shops had diagnosed) without plugging it into diagnostics. He then gave me a quote + timeframe & shook my hand. read more

I pulled over, parked in a seemingly empty lot and called my mom to teach me how to change a tire. While sprawled out on the ground next to my car, a man pulled up and asked if I needed help. I DEFINITELY needed help. It turns out the shop two stores down, Master Wrench, belonged to him. He very kindly took care of my flat tire without making me feel silly for having no clue as to what I was doing. I thanked him and he responded by telling me that it's his hope that if his daughter was in the same situation someone would help her too. A few years ago, I used Master Wrench for some of my car repairs. Since they were located so close to my home, it was a convenient place to take them. After a couple of repairs that seemed a bit out of line on cost, and even results, I parted ways with them and found another option. Recently, after stopping there for what I believed was a quick fix for a squeaky wheel sound, Cory took but a short time to solve the problem and I am not sure there was even a charge! After that experience, I thought I might give them another opportunity regarding the old "check engine light" on my 2001 truck. While given a quote for the problem, which seemed rather high, the job was still completed. The bill was paid, but I questioned the mark up on the parts, which after research, was found to be rather extreme! I registered my concerns with the office clerk, who said he would have the owner, Kurt Raz, call me. He did the next day and we spoke for nearly 30 minutes. He was kind, calm and understanding of my issues, while at the same time, explaining the matrixes he used to keep his business profitable. He showed a sense of concern for his clientele and wanted to see if there was some sort of compromise. He offered a refund on the 'added cost' from the business and even offered to consider my own new parts to be used in the future, if I wished to use his shop. The check was waiting for me later that day, where we met personally. I simply wanted an even playing field, and he was willing to go half way in making that happen. At that point, I mentioned a separate issue with my truck window wiper spray system and decided to give it another go. When I came to pick up the truck the next morning, as promised, the office clerk came out with my key, said, "Merry Christmas" and went back inside! Fixed the issue, which was a 30 minute job, and then refilled the wiper fluid! No charge!! That's a shop I can do business with in the future! The oil change ran about $5 more than other places, which I didn't really mind. I love that they didn't call me while my car was still there to pressure me into buying overpriced parts for my car. They addressed some problems when I came to pick up my car, and made some suggestions. Prices seem fair, so far. Chuck is so kind that he actually sent me to the dealer for a job he felt was out of his league. Helped arrange a pick up with a body shop when I was out of town and was willing to hold my car for as long as I needed. I've gone back multiple times and all have been as great as the first. One of the jobs he did ended up failing 6 months later due to a shotty part and he fixed it again for free. read more

I like the staff, now Brian since Chuck has retired. They have integrity with the continuing philosophy of honesty. If there is something they do not specialize in, they will tell you. They continue to work on my 2001 CRV for scheduled maintenance where I do not trust others like Valvoline, they beat Valvoline's prices, and I am confident that they use the make-specific fluids rather than something generic recommended by Valvoline at the same price. With the rare repair issues that are needed, they have done a good job! Their hourly rate was $95/hr last I checked. They don't go crazy on their time. read more

I've taken my car here before but never again. This morning my wife and infant daughter had to turn around in traffic and accidentally turned through their driveway. A Very angry man came out and pounded on her hood and would not let her turn around going so far as to put a cone in front of her car while screaming at her. My wife apologized profusely and said she didn't know the area and didn't realize she was turning through their parking lot. He continued screaming at her and refused to let her leave. I would never ever take my car there again. I took my car for an inspection in the morning and by the afternoon it was still not done. I was told that they were very busy and that they could not finish it. My husband called at 1 pm and they had just started inspecting it. It is very hard to leave a car for the whole day (arranging car rides, dropping off kids, and what not) but for them not to do the job or even call us ahead of time to give us an update is unacceptable. I do not recommend this place. We will be going to MetroCare (around the corner from Master Wrench, on Capitol Hwy) who do know about customer service, responsibility, and professionalism. read more

They were able to see us within 15 minutes and told us that they thought we had a less serious air flow issue. They suggested we get it done for free under warranty at the dealership and even offered to review any quotes the dealership gave us if it ended up not being covered by the warranty. These guys are the best mechanics in Portland metro. 1.Most importantly, they're honest and that should be the #1 thing that people should consider when choosing a repair shop. 2. They don't do even the smallest thing without making sure you OK it first, that's a big way that many mechanics make their money, by adding extra stuff. 3. For some reason they really try to get you the lowest price and really try to find out what you don't really need. This is great and builds good customer loyalty. 4. I needed a new mechanic and this place came recommended. I went in for a new timing belt and they did the work for a reasonable price. They also informed me of a transmission leak that had been overlooked by the dealer a few months prior, and sent me to Lake Oswego Transmission to get it taken care of. I was very glad that they caught that, because it explained why my transmission had been shifting funny for so long (I bought it used and didn't realize it wasn't "normal" for that car). I've taken my truck here 3 times. They didn't fix the problem of the truck overheating any of those 3 times. In fact, after getting my truck worked on a third time, I drove to DEQ to get the truck serviced. I didn't even get halfway before my truck died again, on 99w in hectic traffic. It seemed as though they were trying to nickel and dime me out of my money. I need my vehicle to work and I'll pay a fair price to have it done right. My family and the Raz's have known each other for almost 100 years, and I've always found Kurt Raz to be a straight up guy, so it's kind of painful to write this review. I think the problem is that Kurt has stepped back from the day to day operations and whoever's managing it is doing a terrible job. First, and I've always found this to be indicative of the quality of service a business offers, the exterior has completely gone to hell. There are random pieces of plywood where some of the facade has fallen off, the paint looks like shit, and the letters for the inspirational quote they are famous for are all askew, with a few missing. That's just lazy and sloppy. I booked an appointment for a transmission filter change for which I was quoted about $275 (I should have shopped around). When I showed up the next morning there was no record of my appointment. No big deal, except the guy checking in the car was the same one I'd made the appointment with and he didn't remember making the appointment. I asked that they also check for the source of a noise and vibration coming form my front end. A little over three hours later I get the call the car is done. Great! That's why the two stars instead of just one. When I pick the car up I ask about the noise and vibration. The guy at the counter tells me they didn't hear/feel anything on the test drive. I knew right then they didn't test drive it because you'd have to be deaf and paralyzed not to hear/feel it. What pissed me off was that instead of copping to the totally minor error, and offering to check it out, the guy lied. Turns out the car needed front wheel hubs and tie rod ends. A few days later as I'm filing the receipt away, I check the pricing. $10 a quart for ATF ($5 to $6 a quart at any auto parts store) and $68 for the filter and gasket ($20 to $25 at any auto parts store). When I'm at another mechanic getting the noise/vibration in the front end checked out, I ask them how much to change a tranny filter. $175. Done with Master Wrench. read more

Master Wrench is Amazing! My car had the check engine line on and I stopped by first thing in the morning on the way to taking my kids to school. I told them that the check engine light was on. At first he told me that their fist available appointment was Thursday, but then he said let me just get pull the code. So he got his computer and connected it to my car and it turns out I was out of oil! I couldn't believe that because I just had an oil change about 2 month prior! He was so kind and put synthetic oil in, and not only that he checked to make sure it wasn't leaking and sure enough it was! He immediately took my car back to see what was going on and sure enough the place i took it to didn't actually change my oil filter! Apparently, the place that "did" my oil change, couldn't get it the filter out and instead had actually punctured it causing all my oil to leak out!
