Musashi Japanese Cuisine - It is hot and stuffy. But the food is worth it. If you like Japanese cuisine, come here.

This place is pretty good. Pretty damn good in fact…read more Today I had a real hankering for Japanese and with only 30minutes to spare before my next meeting I popped in Musashi to pick up some takeaways. Whilst Musashi looks pretty inconspicuous from outside, inside it absolutely hums. The decor is pretty nondescript, black walls with wooden features and giant sake bottles sitting on shelves but the food, well, that is another story. Being in a rather indecisive mood, I decided to go for the chicken teriyaki bento box. It was delicious. The miso had a load of flavour and was clearly not of the packet variety, the edamame beans were perfectly salted, the salad of finely cut cabbage and japanese mayo was crunchy and fresh but the real star of the dish was most definitely the chicken. It was cooked to perfection and was unbelievably tender plus the teriyaki marinade was one of the best ever had. My only teensy tiny complaint was that serving size seemed small given the price. Regardless, that food was that good I will definitely be going back. ASAP.

The decor of the place is pretty standard. The walls, atbles and chairs are all dark, the table settings are immaculate, and there is a private room that you can hire out if you wish. Both the food and drinks are moderately priced, which makes it great for groups and couples. The service is awesome and you;re alwasy greeted by a smiling face. There is a handy 'most popular' board which lets you know the most commonly ordered dishes. I recommend ordering something off the board (even if it's just little), you never know, you might find your new favourite thing. It can be busy on Fridau and Staurday nights, but I think it makes the ambience cool. Pop in for lunch or dinner - you'll always leave satisfied.

However its very popular and you must book on a Friday night. When you arrive a staff member asks you your name and then calls it out to the whole restaurant whilst banging a drum. I had a bunch of small things like Pork skewers which were succulent, the Yum Yum Prawns came in an eggy cream that I found quite yuck yuck. Takoyaki (octopus) balls were ok and Salmon Won tons were good. The choices around the table by my 6 other friends were much the same, good and ok. We were seated at low tables on cushions by a TV screen, conveniently booked by my friend so she could start up the Karaoke. Another group came and joined in also. One of the Japanese girls shook a tambourine and a guy danced around in a onesie. Very comical.

The location, right under the Berkely has not fared well in the past. The last restaurant that was in this location, Onion Johnny's, was popular for a while but died a slow death, possibly as not everyone likes onion. I am more hopeful for Sake Bar Nippon, as Takapuna desperately needs an amazing Japanese restaurant. However, so far, the place has not lived up to expectations set by Epsom. The staff need a bit of pep and perhaps the exec chef needs to come check the place over too. Hopefully just teething problems and this place will get better.

I've been keen to try this place for awhile but I'm not always in Milford but today was the day! Sushi Milford has a number of different hot meals & sides, as well as their sushi, which can also be ordered as platters if you need an event catered. My first impression was a very well presented, clean and airy shop with cute plants & ornaments throughout. There is bench seating by the window and a couple of tables outside and magazines to keep you occupied while you wait. Upon entering, I was greeted by a very cheery girl whom promptly took my order & thanked me. I arrived back within ten minutes after picking up a prescription and my meal was packed and ready to go. I had the salmon sashimi donburi ($14) and the presentation was exactly as the photo suggested on the wall. A good amount of veggies and fresh succulent sashimi on top of delicately flavoured sushi rice (I ordered non spicy so I could share with my little one). I would have rated them 5 stars but there was an over abundance of sliced red onion on my don and more importantly, they use the little packets of wasabi instead of mixing it fresh themselves. Their sushi in the cabinet looked very tempting with an assortment of options, standard flavour combinations and their own varieties. Not the cheapest for sushi but the value of their donburi bowls definitely compensate for their sushi prices, in my own opinion anyways.

On the tray were spring rolls, gyoza, deep-fried prawns (shrimp? I'm one of those hillbillies that never knows the difference), sticky rice and delicious teriyaki chicken. There was also a pack of sushi (6 pieces I think) on the side, as well as a small salad with dressing. At $29 it struck me as a tad on the expensive side, as the amount of food wasn't stupendous... but then again sushi is generally an expensive option, relative to what you get.
