The first impression of me with Japan, was the word and vision of real Tokyo Bay in Tokyo. In 2012, my first time visit Japan. Overlooking Japan from the plane, clearly heard the voice from flight attendant, "We are now flying over Tokyo Bay". Sunny blue took up my whole sight, and mind. After 3 years, that moment, came across Tokyo Bay, is still new in my heart. So when I came across this 'Tokyo Bay' in Takapuna, something attracted my emotion on the spot. Just walked in, hoping to revive that part of memory of my complex with Japan, and its exquisite cuisine. Yes, Tokyo Bay didn't let me down. Simple outlet, natural wooden wine shelves, stone attached into the war, specially-designed ceiling lamp shaping fish swimming in the ocean, intentionally set light, background music, the smile from waitress... There is something called zen floating in the atmosphere. Even during lunch time, business people might still make a little noise, you seem to have your focus in this Japanese cuisine experience and ignore the other. Menu keeps in the traditional way(way too good) Go straight to the set dish. One is Grilled Salmon, and Chicken Teriyaki. Remember, if you have no idea what to choose, choose the first dish on each item. It won't go wrong. Set came up clean and beautiful. The dishware added so much to this whole experience. That's part of the reason so many people are this into Japanese cuisine. You will find the wood spoon unique, the veggie salad was just right with the sauce, the Akaroa salmon tasted fresh, the chicken was cooked gently. What's more, the rice with miso soup is perfect. Then I can't help but wondering what to order from the dessert menu, as the lunch was so nice. Mocha mousse shouldn't go wrong. There it came. Light green in one glass, with cream on top and a drop of mint leaf. Beautiful. Dig through, the chestnut combing autumn flavor, was a real surprise for this season. One tiny detail, you will be amazed that this restaurant is authentic. Let alone every detail is just right. Tranquil blue sea was in my sight, from the window. Yes, Rangitoto is a catchy for the eyes. Suddenly, the moment of my acquaintance with shining Tokyo bay, became vivid in my mind.

Visiting my old stomping ground Takapuna always brings back high school memories. Back then, nothing appealed more than a green tea frappacino and a Jesters pie. Surprisingly, that part of Taka hasn't changed at all. Fast forward to 2016, the addition of Main Beach Takapuna really pumps Takapuna as the lifestyle capital of the shore. With the iconic beach view of Rangitoto on the horizon..there isn't anything quite like it in Auckland. Tokyo Bay is one of the three restaurants on the block, serving Japanese cuisine with a bit of fusion. The owners come from Soto Japanese Restaurant in St Mary's Bay and Tokyo Club in Ponsonby Central so it's no doubt where they get their upbeat flair from. When given the option on a sunny day on the shore, always pop dem sunnies on and bake outside. Sorry in advance for the sun glare on the photos..Vitamin D priorities.. For lunch, we ordered: - sashimi, sushi nigiri platter for two - duck dumplings shumai with Japanese hot mustard - eggplant mis0-yaki - eggplant flame grilled with a sweet miso sesame coating - wagyu croquettes korokke - fried panko potato croquettes with wagyu beef For the curious and adventurous, the small plates menu are ideal with a mixture of traditional and fusion dishes. My favourite was the eggplant miso-yaki which was creamy and deeeelicious. You might even be able to get those who don't like eggplant to give it a try! The duck dumpling shumai also deserves a mention, it was packed with flavour and would be satisfying for meatlovers. I don't usually like the traditional shumai for the pork, but the hot Japanese mustard gave it a good zing. For dessert, we tried: - green tea matcha tiramisu and coffee tiramisu -match mousse As a die-hard fan of matcha, I looked forward so much to taste the matcha-misu but I found that both the tiramisu bites were dusted so much that it was dry to the core. The red bean and matcha mousse was better but you can't go too wrong with the combination of those flavours. There are also bento box options for those who like a bit of everything but struggle with deciphering lengthy menu options. At $25-$28 (lunch) it's a great choice for those who want a little fanciness for lunch without going all out. The dinner menu looks even more exciting, I'd also want to try their extensive sake list, it's got everything from warm house sakes to chilled sakes, nigori (milky and sweet sake) to sake bombs. Bring it on!

In my opinion it is the best Japanese restaurant in Auckland. Great location, cozy and modern interior. Very polite and nice staff. And the food... the food is amazing. Sushi, sashimi- the fish is the freshest! Try their sashimi set for two - you won't be disappointed. If you more a meat lover try lunch set with meat, they have plenty of options. Great tea and good wine. Simply the best!

A great new addition to the takapuna seascape. The duck and mustard dumpling were delectable, the karaage chicken was crispily warm, the seven spice squid was succulently flavoursome and the baked eggplant was scoopingly scrumptious. Sake bombs caught my eye, but I was distracted by the wine list which included a few sexy french numbers. The decor deserves a mention too. A shoal of silver fish swirl above the restaurant giving the impression that one is not just by the sea but underwater. And the state of the art dyson taps in the bathrooms confirm that the future has arrived. The service is great and the view is lovely by day and by night. Worth the drive.

I have become a Japanese food lover from the Teriyaki chicken to the sashimi,Midori helped me fall in love. The restaurant is very cosy and welcoming with soft background music in the background. This creates a nice, relaxed and calm atmosphere perfect for a date, a catch up or even dinner for one. I had the teriyaki chicken with rice and a glass of their rice wine. The food was fresh and tasty, no bumpy or chewy bits in my rice! The chicken was succulent and well flavoured. I thoroughly enjoyed my meal and my only issue was the dessert menu, Midori could do with more dessert options.

There's a great view of the bay from the restaurant, making it a nice place to people watch or the perfect backdrop for a dinner date. My partner really enjoys the udon here and I usually go for the katsu or the one of the hot boxes- the hot boxes in particular are really good. Midori's sushi is pretty popular aswell, which you can order when you're dining in, or take to go- their California rolls are so tasty! I'd suggest trying out one of their entrees too, they've got a good selection at good prices and the portions aren't too big, so you'll still have room for your main meal. Next time you're in Mission Bay I'd try out Midori for a great-tasting meal and great service.

However its very popular and you must book on a Friday night. When you arrive a staff member asks you your name and then calls it out to the whole restaurant whilst banging a drum. I had a bunch of small things like Pork skewers which were succulent, the Yum Yum Prawns came in an eggy cream that I found quite yuck yuck. Takoyaki (octopus) balls were ok and Salmon Won tons were good. The choices around the table by my 6 other friends were much the same, good and ok. We were seated at low tables on cushions by a TV screen, conveniently booked by my friend so she could start up the Karaoke. Another group came and joined in also. One of the Japanese girls shook a tambourine and a guy danced around in a onesie. Very comical.

The location, right under the Berkely has not fared well in the past. The last restaurant that was in this location, Onion Johnny's, was popular for a while but died a slow death, possibly as not everyone likes onion. I am more hopeful for Sake Bar Nippon, as Takapuna desperately needs an amazing Japanese restaurant. However, so far, the place has not lived up to expectations set by Epsom. The staff need a bit of pep and perhaps the exec chef needs to come check the place over too. Hopefully just teething problems and this place will get better.
