Mast General Store is located in downtown Hendersonville. I had trouble finding it this visit as the trees were covering the sign but I found it. The store is fun to browse and see the higher quality items or find that perfect gift. I enjoy walking through the candy section and finding postcards as those aren't easy to find these days. But you can find clothing here, outdoorsy stuff, home goods, and toys. Some products are made in NC or the United States as well. Customer service is usually good here, too. read more

I think we've been to about four different Mast General Store locations now so we know what to expect. Each has a selection of clothing, gifts, toys, candy and food, outdoor gear, etc. On this particular visit my wife found a comfy t-shirt she liked and purchased. There were lots of kids running around so maybe some parents let their kids come here as a reward for enduring other more grownup stores. Always worth a peek, even if it's to see what's on sale. read more

My my my what a difference 140 years makes, I'm sure this place has evolved since 1883 not only in regards to the merchandise but also the service. I'm just glad I didn't have to pack a 50 lb. sack of salt and hard tack back to my covered wagon - by definition this is still a "general store" - which by definition is a rural or small-town store that carries a general line of merchandise but that's where it ends, this a ultra modern purveyor of reproductions, candies and souvenirs they also carries some pretty high end brands like a great selection of Yeti products, some of the finest selection of knives and camping gear, sodas from days gone by and just like the general store from the past a great selection of Birkenstock footwear. Okay it's not what I was expecting or hoping it would be - I wanted barrels of nails and pliers, canning jars, and barn hinges which aren't for sale here but still it's a pretty cool place and probably one of the better places to buy souvenirs memorializing your trip to Hendersonville. This store is very clean and organized and the staff allows you to roam at your own pace without any personal oversight, I'm sure there's electronic surveillance but aren't we always on camera anyways these days, which is totally acceptable in today's society and definitely not a deal breaker, "it makes us safer" any hoot I enjoyed my visit which is sort of a stroll through a reproduction of a time long gone - this is somewhat of a hands-on educational tool for your kids and grandkids, it's a touchy-feely experience that's much better than the old black and white photographs collecting dust in your attic the only difference is the old penny candy we use to enjoy is sold by the pound... read more

I visited Mast General Store in Asheville a few years ago, and when I found a location walking downtown in Hendersonville, my husband and I stopped in. This is a great place to buy souvenirs from Hendersonville or Western NC, or as I like to buy here, snacks for the road trip home. I love the $9.99/lb candy section because I can try new-to-me and unique candies that gas stations and grocery stores don't carry. I always fill a bag when I visit a store that offers this, and I like that Mast General Store has a scale where you can weigh your candy. The cost can add up, but the variety is worth it. If you forget your hat or gloves for hiking in colder temperatures, you can buy high-quality cold weather gear at Mast General. They even have a sale rack, and my husband found a Columbia two-in-one coat here for 40% off. Like a true general store, the service was "general". The workers left us alone to shop, which we were fine with, but were cordial when we checked out. read more

Mast General Store on Main Street in downtown Hendersonville is a twice-yearly favorite when visiting the area. A nostalgic shopping adventure in a circa 1905 building, I stop in when dropping off/picking up my kids at summer camp I nearby Flat Rock. Old-timey merchandise, outdoor and travel apparel and gear, traditional clothing and footwear, along with so much more. Decent prices and many favorites you cannot find elsewhere, I usually drop in for the old-fashioned candy. With that said, I was a bit disappointed on my most recent visit. Walking through an almost empty store, not a single staff member greeted me or inquired whether I needed assistance. And I walked by several of them in search of something to purchase. Continuing my stroll, I picked out a few specialty coffee mugs, a shirt and two bags of candy. I made my way to the check-out counter after about 20 minutes. At the check out counter, I was greeted by a polite female clerk who put her smartphone down to complete my transaction. Upon weighing my candy and given the price, I jokingly said, "that's some heavy candy - what's the weight?" The response was "one pound, 36 ounces." Looking at the scale myself, it read 1.36 pounds. This was my first trip to Hendersonville, but I'd been to the Mast General Store in Asheville a handful of times on prior trips. Needless to say, I was still a BIG FAN! General Stores are such a beautiful reminder of days gone by; the variety of a big box, 'one-stop shop' like Wal-Mart with all the charm of a mom-and-pop. They have a fantastic spread of everything from candy to games, jewelry to clothing, housewares to pantry items and kitchen essentials, gifts, decor, and more. You name it! Their clearance was especially good right after Christmas, and even though it seems like a lot of 'stuff' in a little space, they actually have a second floor, so everything is really well-distributed and not at all crowded. Buyer beware: We easily spent over an hour and it felt like 10 minutes. Always a great way to end a trip to the mountains! read more

I have a love for Mast General Stores. I have visited many different ones including the original- and this location I have been to several times over the years. I love grabbing a new t-shirt when we stop in and this time was no different- except I didn't realize I bought a long sleeve until I got home- booger! lol, I also always raid the cold soda case for some flavor I can't readily get- usually Sarsaparilla or Birch Beer and again- one went into my cooler for the long drive home. The staff is consistently friendly- every single time I step foot inside. The selection of anything and everything you could think of is reminiscent of old general stores- I know, that's the whole point! Prices can be a bit higher for some of the merchandise- it is more touristy. Regardless- it is a pleasure to walk through! read more

I first discovered Mast General Store when I was in school at ASU in Boone, NC. There are two MGSs in the Asheville area and I went to this one in Hendersonville when I last visited my BFF. I love MGS for many reasons, chief among them their veritable plethora of shoes and sandals -- namely Keen, Teva, Chaco and Merrill. In Boone, I lived in a glorious pair of Merrill hikers all year long. I have since discovered Chaco sandals and Teva flip flops, the most awesome pair of flip flops to grace my feet. MGS also has tons of other interesting items, like loose candy by the pound, hiking/camping gear, postcards, books, a selection of children's toys and books, cookbooks, some clothes, local western NC/mountain stuff, Burt's Bees, and a bazillion touristy trinkets and tchotchkes. Parking for this location is the main street in Hendersonville -- we got lucking with a spot across from the front door...but on a busy day, finding parking will be an adventure. read more

While the brands, styles, and products have changed over the years, Mast's has continually filled every available space with any and everything that you can imagine. For the young at heart, the back of the store is the place to satisfy your sugar fix. The barrel of candies are just waiting to be scooped up and placed into your basket and weighted for purchase. If your looking for outdoor gear, including camping, shoes , clothing , and more, then you should make your way up to the second floor. In terms of prices, yes, some may find the prices a bit high; however, you have to keep in mind the quality of what you are purchasing and the location of you where you are. If you find yourself in the area, it is a must stop to at least grab a cold drink and cool down while searching the shelves. Tip: + Main Street parking is somewhat limited during peak times. There is a public small lot off of Fourth Street; however, make sure to bring quarters to pay for your parking ticket. read more

This is a chain of stores in the area (possibly outside the area too) and how cute is it to go to a general store! They have everything-hiking clothes to jams to cat bonnets (and yes we bought one that we put on our cat-and he liked it!). They have all kinds of fun old fashioned candy and soda too. My MIL bought our Christmas gifts (cat pajamas with a cat mask, scarves, warm socks, slippers, and LOTS of nuts/candy/food) here and it's absolutely that type of place-something for everyone. They have a lot of hiking/camping items too given the area. I loved coming in here just because it's so quaint and cute. This is a great store with friendly staff and a nice selection. Like all Mast stores, they have clothing, shoes, jewelry, kitchenware, camping and hiking gear, and candy. We brought our labradoodle with us, and the staff were very welcoming. While their prices are higher than a Target, they are on par with REI or similar stores. We'll definitely be back! read more

I love the unique items as well as the access to a variety of hiking gear. My only issue are the limited store hours. If you're in need of replacement boots for your hiking journey you'll have to wait until 11:00am to get in to purchase them. This is an old time General Store. On the left side they have men and women's clothing, mostly hiking and outdoor apparel. On the right side, the front has general merchandise and "stuff". The back has candy barrels full of every type candy you can imagine. You fill your bag and pay by the pound. For those who can remember, there is Teaberry and Clove gum, Dr. Smiths cough drops, Necco's and those little wax coke bottles filled with red or green sweet liquid. read more

WONDERFUL customer service! Get your outdoor equipment here!! Got a brand new pair of Merrell Siren boots here & went straight to a hike. Within minutes on the hike I'd found the top lace hooks on one of the boots had come off (luckily the laces are long ended ugh I was able to tie them around the boot). After the hike we went back & two wonderful women called the Asheville location and put the same boots in my size on hold for me. Mast caters quite well to both to the tourist and the local. It's right on the main drag of downtown Hendersonville and has the aesthetic of a dry goods store from over a century ago. If you're in town for a leisurely visit, there's a mega variety of souvenirs, from apparel and crafts, to books and edibles specific to the Southeast and Western NC. You can find chow chow, apple butter, dilly beans, and apple salsa (the latter, I cannot vouch for... yet) along with throwback candy such as Squirrel Nut Zippers and Violet Mints. For the kids, there's plenty of toys to amuse and teach and for the ladies (and the gentler of men folk) there's bath and beauty products. For the local and for those in town for some outdoorsy adventures, there's an entire floor upstairs dedicated to getting you outfitted for the mountainous environs. Hiking packs, boots, and clothing for man, woman, and child along with guide books and supplies to keep you happy and healthy along the way. Downstairs, there's lots more clothing which ranges from super comfy to even somewhat chic! They're also good citizens of the mountains and help to support preserving the natural beauty of the area. What a fun store!! We had heard from family that this would be a fun stop and it really was! Upstairs there is a wonderful selection of North Face, Keen, and similar companies at reasonable prices. The candy selection is amazing and the toys were super fun and took me down memory lane with the vintage selection of both. The Mast General Store should be a required stop in any trip to Hendersonville. The store is located in the quaint downtown area, right on Main Street. There is usually plenty of street parking, with the exception of holidays and festivals, then you may have to park off one of the side streets. The general store is two stories and has two front entrances. The entrance on the left leads to an area for clothing (mostly winter wear when I have visited... in the winter). The entrance to the right is mostly home decor and household stuff. Behind all of the home goods is the main attraction: old-fashioned candy in barrels (you purchase by weight) and old-fashioned toys. They also sell fresh popcorn for 50 cents a bag. If nothing else we always end up buying a bag of candy here. Upstairs you will find merchandise geared more towards hiking and backpacking. There is also more clothing located upstairs, including a small selection of children's jackets. I have found some great deals at this store. Last spring when I was in the area I had failed to pack properly for the cold weather. I was able to pick up a nice quilted coat for $20 from the outside sale rack. It's awesome! And now I have a coat for my NC trips. This is also one of my favorite spots to pick up souvenirs. Be sure to pick up a Mast sticker from the register before you leave. =) read more

There is so much stuff in this store, packing two stories, that you'll find yourself pausing to take it all in. I'm a big fan of Blenheim ginger ale, and the fact that this store caries their soda brought me here. I ended up with $100 of stuff, and could have easily left with more, but my wife has better impulse control than I, and managed to extract me from this wonderland. read more

Nice store with lots of variety. Many "old" items that brings back memories. Their prices are OK on some things, but higher on others. Their loose candy is sold by the pound, so it can add-up pretty fast, but at least you get to choose exactly how many of each type you want. The clothing & shoes are of high quality & that comes at a cost. This isn't a five & dime store. Many customers just look around at all the stuff & leave w/o purchasing anything.
