One thing to note: this place doesn't have the full "spa" amenities like showers or a sauna, so if you're looking for that type of experience, this may not be the spot. As a 30‑year‑old mixed‑race woman, I was hoping to enjoy this gift from my partner, but instead spent the session dealing with intrusive and inappropriate conversation. She repeatedly commented that I "didn't look Black" and instead looked "really tan," brought up my skin color, nationality, and race, and shared personal stories about other clients as well as her own sexual trauma connected to massage. Good part of the review: So, I started coming to this Massage place last year I believe. My last really good appointment was in February with A (will not put his name in order to protect his privacy in that way). A is an older gentlemen who is blind but does amazing massages. Every time I had a massage with him I felt relieved, relaxed and happy afterwards. Bad part of the review: After I finished my appointment with A I scheduled my next appointment with A and had to pay for it of course before I receive the service which is normally fine. The receptionist looked in his schedule and I was looking for an appointment the weekend of March 25 for a special occasion, however he was unavailable and so I had to schedule for April 5th. So I paid and scheduled. When I got there, a male massage therapist that I DID NOT schedule with called my last name (said it wrong too) instead of just calling me my first name and he said that he was my therapist today. I was very confused as I DID NOT schedule with him but I went along with it because I was already not having a good weekend. We talked about what needed focusing on and I undressed when it was time. The headrest had a blanket over it instead of having it sanitized... He did not focus on the areas that I asked him to. Also every few seconds in the massage he was pausing as if he was distracted. I imagined he was either on his phone or looking into outer space. I started to chat with him to distract myself from feeling very uncomfortable and then he gave me unwarranted advice about losing weight. Very unprofessional, but while I was there I did not say anything to him about it or staff, because I was leaving unsatisfied and worse than what I felt before I got there. The Worst Part: Monday I called (April 7th) the office and let them know about my experience and they apologized and said they'd take down my name and number and send to supervisor and have them call me. I called at last minute to book a 1 hour massage from a holiday gift card $100! Pleasant staff took my basic information and asked if I had a preference of a man or woman. Staff very nice throughout my time in the facility. Eclectic furniture . My masseuse was Shawna. ( I hope I spelled it right) This petite lady has some strength in those hands let me tell you! I'm 6 ft and 245 lb, I underestimated her completely! She left the room and said to undress as much as I felt comfortable. She focused on my neck, shoulders and back the majority of the time. I definitely felt the knots she kneaded out. Shawna made sure to ask intermittently the pressure was ok/ tolerated. I was in the zone and wanted those knots gone!! I felt amazing when she was done! I asked if they took Independent Health Visa Card from my insurance? She swiped it for the next appointment $50 and it went through! The decor is horrendous and the one room in the front upstairs room always smells like dirty sneakers. Lol but that's the only room I've had that problem. With that said, I've gotten some of the best massages here. Shauna is a goddess. She plays your skin like an instrument. I'm pretty sure I would marry that woman if it meant she could touch me like this daily. (Please don't consider this creepy haha) The pricing is great and I will forever be a customer here. My family has patronized this business for years consistently every month. Recently my father, a loyal customer, experienced a severe medical event unexpectedly on his appointment day. He was hospitalized while my mother contacted Massage therapeutic arts prior to their monthly appointment to kindly ask to reschedule or cancel as we had a family emergency causing them to unfortunately miss their appointment later that day. My mother was met by a receptionist with a nasty disposition who would not make an exception and chose to charge her for the missed appointment. Meanwhile her husband, was fighting for his life. At least my mother had the decency to call at such a moment. She asked if an exception could be made as they have never had to cancel in the YEARS they've been customers. EVERY MONTH FOR YEARS! Yet staff would not accommodate. Customer service is everything and this experience was infuriating. Massage Therapeutic Arts deserves this review because of the many times they have cancelled due to callouts or issues with massage therapists, same day, and inconvenienced their loyal customers, they suffered no reproductions. Yet my parents continued to patronize. When a strange male therapist touched a female customer inappropriately and unwanted, everyone spared this businesses reputation. But, they can't help a customer when they have a legitimate life altering concern. Piss poor service. When asked if the manager or owner would mind giving them a call to consider the circumstances, a lying low life receptionist stated they would make a note, however we never received a call. The good thing is, my family can patronize any business for massages as they have for decades. But the public deserves this review for this trash excuse for a massage business. This is my first visit to this place. When I booked my appointment, I was told that I will have a male for my therapist. I had no problem with that. I was super excited since this place was recommended by a co worker. Come appointment time, I entered the building and there was a female receptionist who had an attitude. She asked me what I need ( in a tone that's not welcoming at all) and I said I had an appointment. Her demeanor was unprofessional and looks like she was having a bad day and just wanted to get her shift done and over. My male masseuse came and I was surprised he was vision impaired. I have no issues with this as long as he is good and does a great job. He showed me to the room and gave me instructions. It was the worse massage I have ever head. He worked briefly on 3 areas of my body, legs and feet then the shoulder and upper back. I keep telling him I wanted deep tissue massage which I have paid for. Then he asked to face up and he worked briefly on my shoulder and neck plus chest. I was concerned since he can't see, he was working on the delicate areas of my neck where the nerves and blood vessels are. Then he massaged my head and then he said he is done. The total amount of encounter was only 49 minutes since I did put my timer. I paid $70 for a full hour of deep tissue massage. This place is a scam. Unethical business practices ZERO STARS I am a combat veteran, and just returned to buffalo after being away for 18 years. Due to military related physical ailments, I routinely need physical therapy, massages, etc. So, when I was walking down Elmwood Avenue yesterday, I was excited to find this place, thinking it could be my new spot. I popped in, hoping they had availability, but they did not, and the front desk booked me for today at 9am, and collected the money up front (before services were rendered). As fate would have it, I had an emergency this morning and could not make my appointment. When I called to reschedule, I was told I would have to pay AGAIN, and that they had availability at 5pm. I opted not to rebook, and they said they'd be keeping the original payment. I am very dissapointed in this business, it is not representative of the neighborly values our community was known for when I left for Iraq. I went here for massage for about 10 years. Found a therapist that was amazing and visited her every 4-6 weeks for years. Very reasonably priced ($50/hr), takes insurance and HSA/FSAs, and has a lot of therapists on staff so you can usually get in quickly. Unfortunately my regular therapist was no longer practicing and I tried probably 6 other therapists. Couldn't find a decent one so I stopped going for a while. Recently tried again and it just was not a good massage. Plus any of the rooms that are on the lower level are crap because all you do is hear everybody in the foyer area the entire time (not to mention the constant creaks because it's an old building but I could usually drown those out). Not relaxing. Front desk staff are hit or miss - some are friendly and some aren't. The therapists are nice and the best ones want you to tell them problem areas to focus on, give you a choice of oil/lotion to use, and check on you to ensure the pressure is the way you like it. Tables are heated always with clean sheets, they'll offer you heat packs, and have hot stones available as well. If you can find a therapist you like, you'll be golden here. Last December, around Xmas time my family was visiting me from London, UK. I wanted to treat them nice and book a family massage for 6 people. They were very nice to accommodate us. 1-2 day before the scheduled massage they called to confirm the appointment, I cancelled for one person and kept the appointment for other 5. We lived 45 min away from the location, when we should up next day around 10 am for our scheduled massage for 5, they simply said we don't have any appointment. It was a debacle, that's where I lost it when I found out the front the desk person ended up canceling all 6 massages instead adjusting to 5 massages. On top of that, they couldn't offer anything in return to make any amendments to show they were sorry, that's 90 mins of driving back and forth just to hear they couldn't do anything. If I could give them a Zero Star, I would. I would never go back there again. Ever. They lack professionalism. I keep reading the responses from the owner that they take pride in professionalism and everything else. I totally disagree. He left there in more pain than when he went in with and did NOT receive his full body massage. Not only that, but the woman didn't even go anywhere close to his requested pain area. The interior was decorated with a warm and cozy feel to it. The room we got has 2 beds with heated blankets and a private bathroom. I decided to give this location a try because it was extremely convenient. I planned a romantic weekend (day after Valentine's Day) for my boyfriend and it was important to find a place close to his restaurant and our hotel. This was the perfect fit. I was a little hesitant simply because upon making the reservation they request payment over the phone. I was a little taken aback by this and found it to be a little..tacky for lack of a better word. I've had several massages but I've never had to pay in advance for a service I'd not yet received three weeks in advance. However, the price was right and I wanted to keep an open mind. The day before our appointment, I was called to confirm our appointment and it was at that time that I was informed that parking would not be available in the parking lot across the street as it was only available Monday through Friday. No biggie; we realized that we could just walk over anyway. I was advised to come a little early to fill out forms as is common practice for a first visit. The day of our massage we arrived 15 minutes early to filled out the necessary paper work. It was a little confusing when we first walked in because it's an old house and you naturally walk toward open doors/room but we found the right room. The waiting room is a little tight and your're sitting pretty close to the reception desk but it was comfortable. There's enough seating for about five people (two love seats and a corner chair) but there was more seating by the entry way. The area itself could use a little pep talk or at he very least some new furniture covers. They were stained and worn down enough to make me do a double take. The receptionist offered us tea, juice and snacks but we didn't quite see where she was directing us (we found later that it was around the corner from the desk leading to the stairs *noted for next time). About 15 minutes after our scheduled time a therapist came down and called my name. We were off! Once we were in the room I was at ease. It was clean, smelled very nice and I felt comfortable. We were offered a heating pad and asked about her problem areas then given a few moments to disrobe and lie down. I loved that the table had a heated blanket on it. I was worried about being cold. That's one of my main issues when I get a massage; not being able to stay warm during the process. Overall I will say that I really, really enjoyed my massage. My therapist really paid attention to my requests and did a nice job and working my problem areas. My boyfriend who I've recently introduced to massages said it was one of the best massages he's had yet. He fell asleep and was snoring towards the end. That was a relief to hear (not his snoring but him saying that it was a good massage). I always wonder if he enjoys some these things or just goes along because I drag him. Ha! My only tiny gripe was that our massage was cut short. We were on time, even early and sat at reception waiting. Our massage ended about 10 minutes earlier than I would have expected. It seemed really quite busy that day; one couple after another, after another and perhaps there was a bit of overlap but I of course would have liked my full 50 minute hands on treatment regardless. At the end of the day we both agreed that it was a really enjoyable and we would both go back in the future. There is seriously something wrong with demanding full payment from a client that hasn't even walked through the door. Why on Earth do expect me to give my credit card info over the phone to a person I've never met, for services that haven't been provided? Does it not even occur to you that some folks like to pay in cash? Can you imagine your hairstylist demanding payment when you book an appointment by phone before the service is performed? How about a chiropractor - their time is very valuable, has a chiro ever asked you to pay ahead of the treatment? A nail salon? Reading some of the other reviews clued me in, though. I have been repeatedly cancelled on last minute by multiple therapists. I train for marathons so having to reschedule last minute is not an option sometimes. You cant get your money back since you pay in full ahead of time. I was also booked on the wrong day but receptionists more than once even after specific requests of dates. The massage was alright, the masseuse was a bit nervous. The kicker was really the lack of customer service. It was my first time there and when I came down from the massage, the receptionist just looked at me like a deer in headlights. She didn't ask me how my massage was, didn't ask if I wanted to leave a tip (which is really crappy for the masseuses to that work there) and failed to explain the whole charging process- which was different from anywhere I've been. I was told on the phone I was being charged 50% deposit on the massage, but then the receptionist told me I was charged with $100 (which was the full amount) so it was conflicting information. But initially she started saying I was already charged $50 but forgot I was there for 2 hrs. So as you can tell, I had to ask her to just start over with the charging process since they lacked the knowledge of explaining to customers that have never been there. Also, with COVID- the front office just wear one thin mask-my masseuse was only wearing one thin fabric mask and honestly I did not feel comfortable with that. When I asked about this to the receptionist- she just gave me a, "yeah we'll pass that info along" but didn't get the vibe they cared. I am very fortunate to have good insurance through my work, and every year I get $275 to spend on health and wellness goods or services. I used to use it for a gym membership, but when I found out I could use it for massage... well, goodbye treadmill! Admittedly, I've only gotten massages at a couple other places, so my basis of comparison is limited. Still, all the therapists I've gone to at Massage Therapeutic Arts have been great. I love the old Victorian building it is in, too. Best of all, it seems like a great deal compared to many other places - my $275 can generally get me about 5 hour-long massages per year! I can often get an appointment even if I call the day of. My one minor complaint is that it is *extremely* busy and the waiting room is very crowded and tight. Parking is also very hard at the Allentown location, but at certain hours you can park in the lot for the Lenox Hotel. (The massage studio may actually have an agreement with the hotel, if I'm remembering correctly - I mean, don't try it during festival season, but otherwise you should be fine.) read more

When walking into the gorgeous victorian home, I check in and then they tell you to take some hot tea while waiting for the massage therapist. Once you get into the room, they give you time to get situated. Then you lay face down on massage table. Everything is comfortable. I tell them my problem areas and they work more on that area (like my neck and shoulders). They give you a parking pass to park next door in the Hotel Lenox parking lot! I really wasn't too ecstatic after having a massage done here. Price wise, it's relatively reasonable: you're looking at $50 for a 50-minute massage. They offer all sorts of services such as couples and hot rock massages. They're also likely to be able to get you in the same day if you call early enough, which is ultimately one of the reasons I ended up going with them. Despite the promises of (fast) stress relief at reasonable prices, the reality is just A-OK. The reception feels more like a doctor's waiting room. Although there's tea and some sweets in the kitchen, the feel of the room and the space is impersonal (although the rooms are beautiful)! The experience kept getting more impersonal the more time I spent here. The receptionist was busy typing stuff and multi-tasking while she curtly asked me to make payment and fill out a few basic forms as a first-timer there. She wasn't mean or unpleasant, just busy. I also found it a bit strange to have to make payment before the massage, especially awkward in regards to tipping since they have signs up telling you to add your tip on your card as you make payment. How exactly am I supposed to know what to tip before the massage? I opted to just tip in cash after the massage. The massage itself was A-OK. A bit impersonal with no real communication between the masseuse and myself. She didn't ask me if I wanted a deep tissue massage nor did she ask for any feedback along the way. She didn't even really tell me what to expect. She introduced herself -- asked me if I had any special issues to note, then told me to get undressed and climb underneath the sheet. She then entered the room and began the massage. I don't expect her to talk to me while I get the massage, but I do expect her to set my expectations accordingly and communicate with me to let me know what she's planning on doing beforehand or at the very least ask me if I prefer a deeper or lighter massage. What she ended up doing was first massaging the feet, then back, then arms and then neck. I would preferred she told me what her plan would be beforehand and then ask me if that sounded good and let me know that it's OK to ask her to focus on different parts of the body if need be. That wasn't done and I didn't feel an open line of communication between her and I, which made my experience quite generic. Half way through I told her "to not be afraid to go a bit deeper and press a bit more," which she did. However, even given my preference for more communication, the massage itself was just A-OK. The good was the neck work. My neck definitely felt better afterward, but I would have preferred more time was spent on my back (as opposed to arms or feet). Compared to other massages that I've had where afterward I was literally singing praises and feeling like a million bucks, this one was just OK. I went to the location on North St and this was the first time I had ever gotten a massage in Buffalo. MTA was the only place I could find after two hours of google searching "couples massage" within a $120 budget. A couples massage is $100 (50 minute massage for each person). Calling ahead of time and booking an appointment is required. If it's your first time with them, they will have you pay over the phone. Something to keep in mind, since I had no idea until I called. Since this was my first massage experience, also first couples massage experience, I didn't know what to expect. When you're on the way to MTA, I definitely suggest leaving an extra few minutes earlier since parking around North St is the worst. It can be incredibly stressful and that negative energy is not something you want going into a massage. When you walk into MTA, they will have you fill out a form and have you wait about 5 minutes before your massage. The massage itself was pretty good in my opinion. Being a student, I carry a 10+ pound backpack around for years has really messed up my back. The massage therapist recognized how tense my back/shoulder muscles were and really focused on those areas and spent the most time on them. Overall, I would definitely go back in the future. Very cold (the room was cold), impersonal, weird setting for a relaxing massage because its in a corporate building. Still perplexed at how my massage therapist missed the area I wanted work, missed my feet and hardly did my arms and legs in a 90 minute appointment. She focused WAY too much on doing painful work in shoulder blade (rhomboids - which weren't anything I mentioned nor that needed work) area and not more than 4 minutes on lower back with his where I said (three times) where my pain was.She also spent a lot of time not moving because of pressing on imaginary pressure points. I was a massage therapist for 12 years so I know its very possible to cover an entire person and focus on areas of concern within 90 minutes. I tipped well but wont be back. When I returned they denied the insurance and said 'they were booked with this type of client' and could not fulfill the appointment. I received a deep tissue massage for my birthday. This was by far the worst massage I have ever had. The massage therapist was less than half my size and seemed afraid to actually massage. I listed my neck and shoulders as problem areas. They were barely touched. Front of my shoulders, not at all, upper chest, not at all. Nothing was truly massaged. I don't think she was strong enough or willing enough to actually get into a muscle. Half of it was me being grazed by her fingertips. It was set for 4 pm. It began at 4:08 and I was in the car by 4:54. It was a waste of time and money. You still have to wear a mask although there is no mandate from the state. They got 1 star because that's as low as I can go. I have received 10 minute massages at work that were more effective. A foam roller and a massager from Amazon would get 5 stars compared to this. read more

I really wanted to be in love with this place but we have had so many issues - however, this review has a silver lining and one reason we will continue to book here and that is Sarah E. Here's the Saga ... My husband and I originally booked our first massage in 2018 being very specific that we were looking for deep tissue. We were booked at the Delaware location and were brought in a room together. The massages were fine but definitely not deep tissue. We thought maybe we weren't specific with our preference pre-treatment. We decided to try again a few months later - I was even more specific with the receptionist on the phone and she assured us it was noted. Sadly, it still wasn't what we were looking for. THEN When I got pregnant we decided to try a third time. Being a bit more blunt when booking with the receptionist and again she assured me that who we were booked would be perfect for what we were looking for. Well that was far from the truth - my masseuse didn't even know I was pregnant. She tried to lay me on my stomach (the other masseuse had to show her how to set up the table for a prenatal massage), THEN she tried to apply heat to my lower back which was a blatant clue she had no idea what she was doing. I should have quit there but I decided to give her another chance and explained my sore spots. The massage concluded and it was like we never spoke. She skipped every place I said was sore and it was nothing more than a light rub on the back. I thought, well hopefully my husbands masseuse was the right fit this time. This was the worst part. He was greeted by an elderly woman with a very substantial smokers cough. We thought "don't judge a book by it's cover" - she then proceeded to hook herself up to an oxogen tank and needed to take frequent breaks to spit out the mucus she kept coughing up. It was also the weakest massage he has ever received. So needless to say I finally called and spoke to a manager about our concerns. She was incredibly sweet and offered to comp our next massage. So here we are , our fourth attempt in - i booked our deep tissue massages with Sarah E and Chris. This time we were taken into separate rooms. When I asked Sarah why, she said that we asked for deep tissue and they never do deep tissue in a couples massage! What the heck? I never asked for us to be in the same room and was very specific on the deep tissue request. how did no one inform us of this until our fourth time here? This is what was mind boggling to me. At this point i had LOW expectations - My husbands said his massage with Chris was fine but he was brought in almost 15 minutes later than me and ended almost 15 minutes earlier than me? Not great BUT SARAH IS A STAR! It was the best deep tissue massage i have ever had and exactly what I FINALLY wanted. She listened to exactly what i needed and worked accordingly my. I purchased my friend a prenatal massage today for her birthday massage therapist was late the table was cold and she said too me the service was okay but she could feel and smell the racism. This is a true massage place. Very professional. Parking is either street, or get a special pass from them for the lot nearby. This place is always busy. I'm guessing because they are reasonably priced, and they take insurance. That combo is sure to keep you busy. The rooms are all different, this place is in an old Victorian house that's been made into a business. Some rooms are bigger than others. Some have bathrooms attached (maybe all, I'm not sure). Its an elegant old house and has been well renovated, but you can hear the creaking wood floors sometimes, and the heater can hiss a little on occasion. I have yet to have a bad massage here, and I know some others who have standing appointments and have never had a bad experience either. I love a good massage. Who doesn't? I learned of Massage Therapeutic Arts through word of mouth. My mom went on a recommendation from a friend. She enjoyed her experience so much she insisted I go and gifted me a session. I was able to get an appointment for the afternoon of the day I called. Being flexible with the choice of therapist may have helped. The receptionist was very friendly and helpful. She gave excellent directions so I was able to find the office easily. I carry a lot of stress in my upper body. I asked for a full body massage with a focus in that area. The therapist used a comfortable level of pressure and regularly checked in to see how I was doing. At the end of my session I was satisfied. I noticed the massage lasted a few minutes less than an hour - maybe to give me time to get dressed within the hour? If I were to go back, I'd ask the therapist to dig in to my problem areas and really work out the knots. All in all, a good value for the price. I'd recommend them and would be more than willing to return. read more
