I called to make an appointment and the receptionist was very rude. I was asking how many sessions I had and she said that I'm not showing up in their system but when I told her I signed up with another location she said she was now able to see my account and i've never had this issue before. And i've made appointments with locations even in LA with the same account. I also asked if I could schedule an appointment for a deep tissue massage, she tells me that they won't have any availability for another 4-6 weeks. Then I asked for a date and she said nothing till january 1st. So i was about to tell her a date and she immediately says she had a lot of customers waiting and she needs to put me on hold. I'm not sure why she couldn't politely ask to put me on hold and not make me feel bad for trying to schedule an appointment. I felt very rushed and if customers are waiting that's fine but why make me feel bad about it? Very upset with the customer service. I just decided to call back another time. I'd rather make the drive to another location to be honest. This entire conversation happened in a span of 1 minute so it gives you an idea of how fast she was rushing me. Called to schedule a massage for the first time at this specific location although I've been to other massage envy locations. Was told they are booked two months out. Ok got scheduled. No mention of options or availability for different types of practitioners. Show up to appointment and am asked what type of massage I'm looking for. Then I'm told that the only therapist working and the one I was scheduled with only does very gentle massages. Why even bother to ask and why not mention that upon initial booking? Was taken back and asked about problem areas. Listed the spot in upper back. Lady walked out without saying a word. Came back a few minutes later and got started without saying a word. My 5 year old daughter could apply more pressure than that. Once the session was done I was told "session is over" and she just walked out without another word. Front desk staff were very nice but I still can't reason why on a Saturday there was only one option and why they didn't bother to ask about massage type preference when scheduling appointments if this is the only option. I've been a horrible yelper. I've known of the treasure held here and have wanted to keep it to myself out of pure selfishness. So first things first. Always clean and mindful of the tone being set. Fresh warm/cold water upon arrival and if the staff isn't busy, they offer it to you and grab your choice. The staff here has always been super accommodating and pleasant. I have never felt as though their business mind overruled their desire to please the members/customers. I've always gotten a reminder call with ample time to cancel if need be. When I did need to cancel, they gave me the first time slot that fit with my masseuse of choice. This brings me to my final point and most marked characteristic of selfishness... JOYCELYN!!! She is amazing. She gets acquainted with you JUST enough to let you know she's not creepy. She remembers anything you've spoken about from previous sessions (kids, work, sports, etc) and appears genuinely interested. She then quiets down and lets her hands and perfect understanding of muscles and pressure run the show. I'm put to sleep every time and always leave thinking "I should've gotten a 90 min." She never rushes the clock and is certain to hit the trouble spots you mention to her. I've never mentioned her because she already has a tight schedule and I feared that opening up about her would only decrease her availability even more. At first I was skeptical (not of her but of getting a massage itself) but she was very friendly, talked just a little (light conversation in the beginning), she made me feel comfortable and safe. The front desk staff was also super friendly, inviting, and listened to any concerns I had. I left feeling relaxed and light on my feet - there's a chance I may have dozed off for a second during the massage as well. The facility itself is clean, smells wonderful, the environment is soothing. I really want to go back there and sleep, because it was just so darn relaxing and comfortable. Highly recommended! I'm a member with Massage Envy, and I've had a chance to try services at a few different locations. The site at Gainesville, VA, has consistently been my favorite. Great front desk staff. Clean, professional, relaxing facility. And all three of the therapists I've tried have been terrific. This morning, I especially enjoyed working with Zachary. He took time to ask about different issues I'd like for our focus, and his follow-up questions demonstrated a solid understanding of muscular and skeletal anatomy. Throughout the session, he provided feedback about what he was doing, what he discovered, etc. And he frequently checked in with me to see how I was doing, how I felt about the pressure levels, if I was okay as we worked on a specific problem area, etc. Looking forward to my next visit already! read more

Let me start by saying I am giving the establishment itself 4 stars because of its false leading advertising. As advertised a 60 minute massage or 1 hour - that is not quite what you receive. Today, for example, by the time I was seated in the hospitality room, greeted by the massage therapist, brought to the room, a quick convo of what to expect or what was needed, time to undress and get situated - nearly ten minutes had passed. So, 2:00 -2:09:32 - (I know the second she came back in because of the fancy clock on the shelf) she was delightful, worked on my stressed areas, was very professional and had a wonderful attitude. Once finished, I immediately looked at the clock 2:56. My session was over and I was not to get dressed. So- that alone has me agitated. Expect no more than 45 minutes of work when you visit. As for therapists, I had Matthew first and he was one of the best deep tissue massages I've had. I told him I wanted the deeper pressure and I was satisfied with the attention he put on my neck and shoulders which is where I am needing the most work done. Today I had Erin. She was also great! She seems to know types of therapy will work best for your particular needs and listened to what I wanted and followed through. I left happy today as I did last week. As for the company - if they advertised 45 minutes vs 60 minutes, I wouldn't be as upset. Every other massage place I've been to has given the entire 69 minutes. Why did I return, you may ask? As of now I'm working off of a gift card. Once the gift card has been used up, I will likely seek treatment elsewhere, as that 15 minutes is important to me and I find it to be dishonest as a company to advertise something and give you something else. read more

My husband called to set up a couples massage for our anniversary. They said they did couples massages and had availability for the afternoon which worked for us. Upon getting there we had some paperwork to fill out then we waited in the quiet room. When they came and got us for our massage they informed us that they don't do couples massages at this location..... they apologized for the confusion but it was very disappointing since we were told otherwise on the phone. My husband was rather upset as it was an anniversary gift for both of us and he had a hard time relaxing during his massage. Elvira did my massage and she was GREAT! She made me feel so comfortable and relaxed. I will go back to her again if my schedule allows. Five stars for Elvira! For my husband, he said that she focused on all the areas he asked about besides his lower back(which needed the most attention). I went to Massage Envy in Gainesville with my husband for the first time last week. Usually we go to La Vida Massage next to Harris Teeter in Haymarket/Gainesville, but our favorite therapists weren't working that day and we decided to branch out and take advantage of Massage Envy's new client rates to try their services. When we arrived we sat in the lobby and filled out the standard new client forms/questionnaires. One of the employees from behind the desk then came over to my husband and I and asked us questions pertaining to our preference of type of massage, problem areas, etc. I am used to these questions being asked by the therapist privately just prior to your session once you are in the room, not in a lobby full of people, so that was a little strange. We then waited in "the quiet room" for our respective therapists, which was a serene room in the back with about eight or so chairs, all of which were full of people waiting for their massages. It was much busier than I'm used to at La Vida Massage. We then went back to our respective rooms with our therapists and had our massages. Overall, I was not impressed at all. My therapist (I want to say her name was Jen?) had very poor technique, and I felt either she did not have much experience or maybe she just sucks at giving massages. There was no fluidity to her motions, it was all repetitive awkward rubbing over the same spots. And elbows...a lot of elbows. I felt like she was making up for the crappy massage by using a lot of oil because she used so much! Gross! When the massage was over I asked for a wet towel to wipe off with because she used more oil than any therapist I've been to, and I've probably been to about fifteen different therapists in my life. Also, I noted on the form that I did not want massage on my face and she massaged my face anyway and I had to remind her. When we left I asked my husband how his was and he was equally disappointed. I believe his exact words were: "Have you ever had a massage with only elbows? Because I just did." He told me his therapist (sorry, I don't remember her name) seemed very lazy, and that it was probably the worst massage he ever received. He also referred to Massage Envy as being "the McDonald's of massage places", which couldn't be more true. It was so busy in there and honestly the environment itself was the opposite of relaxing. FYI we paid $118 for two massages (introductory price), which - albeit cheap for two massages - was a waste considering the quality! I will be eagerly running back to La Vida Massage for my future massages. Between my husband and I, we have probably tried 6 different therapists there and agreed that even the "worst" massage we got at La Vida was miles better than the one we got at Massage Envy. I have gotten so many great massages at La Vida, by multiple different therapists, and after trying Massage Envy I will not roll the dice and take a chance on anywhere else again. read more

All of the people who work at the Gainesville site where I go are cheerful, courteous and helpful, not to mention the excellent massages that I always receive. Your "one-hour" massage isn't really one hour. It's more like 40 minutes. I guess what they mean by one hour includes: check-in + waiting room + massage + check-out. If you have an appointment in the evening - they'll for sure cut it short. I get that it's been a long day and the employees want to go home... But then why offer late appointments? If you want your money's worth, you're better off searching for Groupon deals at other smaller spas instead of a big corporation. My parents and I have been here a few times to try different types of massage and different masseuses... And that's the last of it! I am still a member of ME and really like the benefits of membership. Since I injured my back, I have been coming here at least once a month. I opted for fewer chiropractic visits and more ME visits since a chiropractic visit was a $30 copay for about 20 minutes vs a 1hr ME visit for $50+gratuity. I typically opt for the 1.5 hour massage and pay the additional $$. For anyone considering massage therapy, I definitely recommend trying this location. People should realize that not every therapist working is exactly the same, they are not robots. All therapists that I have tried have all been very skilled and knowledgeable in massage therapy. If you need help choosing a therapist, simply ask the receptionists what you are looking for. You might want to try several therapists on successive visits to find your go to therapist. read more

This was my first visit and I thought it was OK. Not the best place I have had a massage. The front desk was nice but as soon as I started to fill out the paperwork they started talking about getting me to join and get a membership. I was there to get a massage because I had been given a gift certificate for my birthday. Then they told me we could discuss that after my massage. So I immediately start dreading the sales talk that will come after the massage instead of relaxing. The facility was nice and the people were nice. The massage was not the best I have had. I actually had to tell the lady she was hurting me which made me tense up rather than relax. I had asked for a Swedish massage to relax and not the deep tissue punishment treatment. I had some knots in my back that did not bother me until she got fixated on them. She spent so much time on my back and these knots that she had to rush through the rest of the massage to make it a full body massage. I woke up in the middle of the night feeling as if I had been in a car accident. My shoulders and neck feel bruised. So much so I had my husband look to see if I had black and blue marks. This is not the did not drink enough water after the massage funk, this is actual hurt. After my massage I was put into the uncomfortable high pressure "buy this now for a great deal" situation. This kind of thing rubs me the wrong way. But they were very polite about it and when I told them I would take the info with me and talk to my husband they gave me the info and dropped the subject. However, due to the lack of costumer service skills and inappropriate attitude coming from the staff member that answers the phone I am inclined to give this review 2 stars. Perhaps next time the staff that answers the phone could demonstrate better customer service skills to their clients. I LOVED the therapist Greg who did my massage and the front desk staff was awesome. I loved the welcoming environment and he really worked with what I told him. If I could give negative stars I would - let's start with the good - the massage therapists are awesome - after all this is why I come here - to relax once a month and just melt away the stress - great facials too. Can't say enough good things about the back of the house! Now the bad - management - I've been a member for five years and every year they have gotten worse and worse. As of now I have canceled my membership - prices went up for worse service. Three different times I have shown up five minutes before my appointment to have forms shoved in my face - something about a change in their computer systems and need to reverify information. I'm fine with the need and understand it but they could have told me - when they called three days earlier to confirm my appointment - to show up 15 minutes early. Ironically I was three doors down window shopping and could have easily come in early but they failed to tell me that they had a new system. Instead, they expect me to use my massage time to complete their paperwork - totally pisses me off and stresses me out before my massage. A 90 minute massage is supposed to be 80 minutes hands on - as Massage Envy claims - unless they accost you at the front door with paperwork. Then it's maybe 70 minutes if you're lucky and totally ruins the experience - so I'm no longer renewing my membership after 5 years. They just don't learn - year after year same CRAP! And I get it - totally first world problems but if your paying money for a relaxed experience last thing you want is more stress. So my latest issue today and why I'm yelping is because I showed up for my appointment at 2pm and some 18 year old bubble gum chewing brainless receptionist informed me that my appointment wasn't until 3pm - rennet they called me three days ago to confirm the appointment at 2pm. Also, this after they called me three weeks ago and canceled my facial before my massage - they called me to cancel because the lady that does the facials resigned - guessing due to management. But in the process of canceling the one hour facial they told me the massage would be moved from 3pm to 2pm. When I checked in today, the young lady receptionist couldn't wait to tell ME that I had made a mistake and needed to come back in an hour - like I wasn't even allowed into the place. Nothing about hey sir we are sorry we made a mistake after moving your appointment around, nothing at all - it was finger pointing about how I made a mistake - she didn't even have visibility about how the appointment had been changed. Not sure how the massage therapists were trained but it looks like each one of them have their own technique and they don't have a standard method for massage. I love going to massage envy! I walked in and check in is always quick and easy. I like seeing smiling faces greet me and this place never disappoints. They take me back to the quite room and ask if I want something to drink. This time I had infused water and it was delicious! I only had to wait a few minutes which I don't mind at all, because it helps me get into the "massage mindset". Matt was my masseuse and has been the last several times. He is my absolute favorite! I have had at least 4 other people before him. Which they were all good of course, but Matt is by far my favorite. He will keep it quite when I want peace, or If I ask questions he always informs me of what's going on and how it helps. He has even showed me certain stretches that I can do at home to help with my needs. I love this place & Matt. I will definitely continue going back!! read more

I have had odder experiences in my lifetime but never while a massage so at least I can check "strange massage" off my list. More on that later. The facility is clean and quiet and the reception staff was kind and friendly. They offered you water, gave you paperwork, asked you specific questions, then sent you to a quiet room to wait for a massage therapist. There were bowls of mints everywhere (including the bathroom) which was nice seeing as we're going to be face-to-face for some time and the last thing either one of use wants to smell is your lunch interacting with the bacteria in your mouth. All of this was within acceptable normal parameters. After I got to the massage room, the therapist stood in the door and made a noise somewhere between a chortle and the sound you make when something is slightly amusing or surprisingly nice. Slightly disconcerting but whatever, I'm used to strange people. Note to staff: I'm going to be close to naked here so, in the future, let's try to work together to prevent it from being SUPER awkward. Massage starts and I look up to see the therapist staring off into the corner of the room with the strangest smile on her face like she's watching a mind movie of sorts and is incredibly pleased with the plot; this gazing is interspersed with whisper giggles aaaaaand this continues for about an hour (the entire length of the massage). I get it -- you're doing this all day and if you need herbal refreshments to get through it then do what you need to do, sister, no judgements. And if you did not imbibe said refreshments then holy hell I don't know what was happening. All that aside, the massage was very helpful. I have a gatrillion knots all over my body due to constant exercise and I felt all kinds of knots release so at least I can attest to absolute competency. I would say that perhaps laying off the heavy cigarettes may lend to a more positive experience for the customer (maybe have an accessible bottle of Febreeze for those individuals who smoke?) but overall it was an all-around memorable experience. Regardless, I will be back as I have been told I need at least 2 or 3 more of these before I visit a chiropractor so I will be able to give another update some time in the future. read more

My daughter bought us memberships for Christmas and this was my first visit to a ME. James was my therapist, he seemed awkward and was surprised when I asked for add-ons to my massage. He talked a lot - about himself, but I could have asked him to stop - I was just too tired to bother. He told me several times about how he was different from the other therapists there - insinuating that he was better. My daughter's massage was with Lindsay and she enjoyed it. I went to ME a few months ago to have a massage and was very excited about the introductory 1 hr price. I absolutely loved my massage therapist.(can't remember her name,red hair?) the whole massage experience was wonderful. The office was clean and peaceful. It was very comparable to Spa Royale. HOWEVER, I was very turned off by the fact that no sooner than I walk back into the lobby after my massage, I am being persuaded to purchase the one year membership. Big mistake. The whole membership thing was not fully explained to me. I was under the impression I could cancel within 30 days. I asked if I could come back the next day when I had more time to talk about the membership to discuss it. But, that wasn't an option.I had to do it at that very moment. Despite being turned off by the whole situation, I figured for the price the membership was a good deal so I signed up for it. Fast forward to a month later. My credit card information was stolen from a gas pump.(go figure) and I had to wait 3 weeks for a new debit card to come in the mail. I got a call from ME about a month later saying they tried to run my card but it wouldn't go through.(because the numbers have changed.) I haven't used any services at all besides my very first introductory massage yet received a voicemail saying my account was being sent to collections. The whole situation is shady. I will not be returning to ME. It's unfortunate. If they would not push that membership on people the way they do, they would be a lot better off. I have had some people ask me about ME before. It's sad that the therapists there are wonderful but due to the pushy antics they have going on, I will not be recommending anyone to ME.
