Doug was fantastic- he answered all my questions, advised on the best way to divvy up the fleet of boats, suggested a slightly different put-in time to avoid bad weather, and was nice enough to even send us the photo he took of the whole gang with his own phone after I realized my photos were blurry. The paddle was lovely- Doug suggested a couple places to pull over and hop in the river to cool off. The 21 of us ALL had a great time (no small feat there!), and would do this trip again in a heartbeat.

Camp Gorham is a camp owned by the Rochester,NY branch of the YMCA. The camp is located in the tiny…read morevillage of Eagle Bay in the Adirondacks (right by Inlet and a 10 mile drive from the slightly larger vacation town of Old Forge). Camp Gorham is your typical summer camp (think of the film "Wet Hot American Summer"), it's been a tradition in a number of families since 1961. The camp is 1500 acres (with a 400 acre lake). Although the camp is only on one side of the lake they own the land all around the lake as to keep the area quiet and private. The camp is open for a number of weeks through the summer and for one week at the end of the summer they run "Family Camp" where anyone can go (though mostly families of all ages). I went during 2 summers with a girl friend and her family (who had been going for 30+ years). The camp is extremely welcoming and very well set up. The campers stay in cabins (most of the time there are 2 families per cabin, the cabin we had had 3 bedrooms (with bunks) and a bathroom. Some cabins have kitchenettes, hot water, and a shower while others aren't so lucky. The accommodations weren't luxurious or all that comfortable but it's not that kind of place and I wasn't expecting it to be. The mess hall serves meals 3 times a day during scheduled times (8:30am, 12:30pm, 5:30pm), it's not amazing food by any stretch of the imagination but it's all inclusive and you definitely will be full for your entire week there. The camp has a schedule of activities throughout the week that you sign up for after breakfast, you don't have to participate in anything if you don't want but part of the reason you pay to come here is so that you can do things like go on group hikes in nearby mountains, water ski, horseback ride, archery, kayak, or more. They also had camp wide activities like square dancing (a big tradition here). At no point did I feel like I was too grown up to be there which was nice. It was just a beautiful camp with lots of nice people with lots of things to do (or you could do absolutely nothing if you'd prefer). If you've had enough of your time in the camp you can always drive into Old Forge or Inlet and go to a bar, a movie, or something which is what a lot of us did during the week (as there isn't much to do other than relax during the evening hours). Besides the less than luxurious accommodations and the frigid water temperatures I really enjoyed my experience at Camp Gorham and would love to come back, especially if I ever start a family of my own.

Five and a half weeks into my daughter's third summer here, she was sent home for her "safety" and…read morethe "safety" of others. My daughter has never been in trouble a day in her life. In the weeks leading up to her being sent home, she had a severe allergic reaction to a bee sting for the first time in her life. She received appropriate treatment, was evaluated at the hospital and returned to camp. A couple of weeks later, she had what was assessed as an allergic reaction to some candy she had eaten from the canteen and again was treated at the hospital. She had no known food allergies prior to this and was told at the hospital that they were not sure what caused the reaction. In the days/hours leading to her dismissal, she had gone to the nurse to get a band-aid after scratching herself on the metal bed frame in the bunk. The nurse asked her about cutting which my daughter denied. In her words, "why would I go to the nurse if I was doing that?". While waiting in-line at the canteen thinking that she had had an allergic reaction to something she had eaten there, she was apparently overheard discussing this with a friend. This was interpreted as her trying to eat something to purposely make herself sick and then also trying to get other kids to eat things that would make them sick. Carolyn, the director cited concerns of her inciting TikTok challenge. If you know my daughter, which they should have but obviously didn't, this quite frankly is insane. I was called to pick her up on Wednesday. We live five hours away and were scheduled to be at camp on that Friday for parents' weekend. My daughter had the lead in one of the plays. She was told to pack her things but not tell anyone that she was leaving and was admonished by the head counselor Jade for telling her friends what was happening when her bags were packed in the middle of her bunk. The camp director, Carolyn told her that she could eat with her friends if she "behaved". My daughter had no understanding of what she had done or what was going on. No one had a conversation with her to clarify anything that had been overheard. They would not share who overheard what so that my daughter could put comments into context. It was clear in those hours that Carolyn, had no idea what my daughter's last name was even when sending her home. This was after 11 1/2 weeks and ~$27,000 spent at this camp over the course of three years. She also had no idea how long she had been coming there. My daughter was not allowed to contact me as she requested during those hours. These people couldn't care less about your kid. They want your money and nothing more.

The cabins were really nice and clean upon arrival. There were bathrooms and sinks in the cabins which was awesome. A small bathhouse was not far away with really nice showers. The only thing I could say was they were advertised as heated and defenitly were not! The kitchen staff was incredible in serving up three meals a day with snacks in between. They were amazing at catering to vegan and vegetarian's as well! The camp staff in general was awesome. We had several classes including mountain biking, rock climbing, kayaking, paddle boarding, and yoga. The staff helped set up materials and walked us through how to properly use them every step of the way. The staff even set up an area for Olympic games and transported water as well. This camp had such a great set up, so many things to do and see, and a staff that made a huge difference in making things run smoothly!

Especially the instructor (in the picture) was very meticulous, enthusiastic and patient. My wife has a fear of heights and the instructor made it a point to stay with her all throughout and help her complete all the 10 ziplines ranging from the short ones to the long ones.
