So excited to see a new ramen location in Charlottesville. I've been at Mashumen twice so far and ordered the same thing both times. I ordered the chasu buns, karate, and the Mayu Ramen. The two chasu buns were flavorful and the pork chasu was a nice serving potion, but in the most recent time I ordered, I would have preferred the pork chasu to be more warm and further cooked. It wasn't not cooked, just not cooked enough that the texture was too chewy and was hard to bite. The ramen was great both times - appreciate the strong garlic flavor for the Mayu ramen. I liked the noodles, although I think they can be cooked slightly more. The egg was great and the vegetables were fresh. I'd definitely be down to try one of their spicier options in the future. The karage was flavorful and moist inside, although I would've loved the outside to be more crispy/crunchy. read more

Nice to see some much needed asian diversity in Charlottesville's food scene! Not the best ramen I've ever had, but definitely the best in Charlottesville. It was fine. I am a huge ramen fan, probably more than pho. I've had it in Japan and just about everywhere I travel. To date, the best ramen in cville is probably Kyoto and still is. The service was pretty slow and lacking in attention...even when I was the only person there. I give the ramen a 3/5 and the service a 2.5/5. The broth was OK. Lacking much in the way of flavor. The pork was average and my soft boiled egg was cold. Obviously premade and sitting in the ingredient pile waiting to be used. Would I go again? Probably not unless the reviews start improving. read more

Ramen was flavorful and filled with a lot of toppings. The chashu pork was not my favorite, I think they cooked it at a higher temperature than I normally do, which made the meat less flakey and a bit chewy. The biggest disappointment for me was there Shirley Temple. Now you may wonder what inspires a 30+ year old man to order one of these, and I wouldn't have ordered but for some reason it is listed as a special drink on the menu. Ordered dinner delivered by GrubHub last night, first time trying Mashumen and it was FANTASTIC!!! The food was very fresh and absolutely delicious. Came in sturdy leakproof container, still warm. Portion so large it filled two large dinner plates, so I had half for dinner and the other half for lunch the next day. My order was filled quickly and arrived on time. They even remembered to send utensils and napkins. All around perfect experience. They have a great variety of offerings on their menu and it is vegetarian friendly. My area has a lot of great Ramen shops so I wasn't setting my expectations too high when the wife and I found this place while visiting. Anyone who's been to Charlottesville knows it's not the most....diverse town, so food is always hit or miss. We were definitely pleasantly surprised though by the end of the meal! The portions sizes were good and the ramen flavorful. The meal wasn't overly salty and it was nice to be able to actually taste the individual ingredients instead of just a bowl of salt like a lot of ramen places. The pork was also well cooked and seasoned. I do wish they gave just a little bit more broth with their servings and the noodles were just alright, but not bad by any means. Hands down though they have one of the best soft eggs I've ever had. If you like them definitely double up with your order. We will definitely be back the next time we're in town! read more

I ordered the mayu ramen and my girlfriend got the mashu ramen (takeout order). *BROTH*: - Mashu: Didn't feel as heavy as Kuma's ramen, great flavor - Mayu: Great flavor, very garlic heavy (in a good way) *NOODLES*: - Kinda average. Not particularly bad but not great. *CHASHU AND TOPPINGS*: - The chashu pork is not good imo. Tastes a lot like the Korean dish Jokbal ( ). It is super tender though, but the flavor is really lacking and tastes way too porky. - Menma and the soft Egg are 10/10 though *PRICE*: - For what you get, it's okay! We stopped into Mashumen on a rainy afternoon and what a great choice it was! We parked in the back where there is plenty of parking spots. The restaurant is very beautiful on the inside and you can tell it was brand new. Our server Mary was very kind and helpful. We had an order of chicken Gyoza, the Mayu Ramen (I added a scoop of spicy bean paste) and the Shoyu Ramen. Everything was delicious! I wanted to drink the Mayu broth it was so good! Prior to leaving, we were offered some of the mashu buns and they were also amazing! This is a lovely local spot, with very nice ambience for a date night or just a nice meal with family. I'm so excited that Charlottesville actually has a decent ramen place in town at last! I got the tonkonastu ramen and the broth was super tasty and rich. You can tell they spent time making it. The noodles were al dente and the chasu pork was delicious. It didn't look like a lot when I got my bowl but turned out to be quite filling (and I was pretty hungry beforehand)! So, so disappointed. After a friend recommended Mashumen, my spouse & I finally had the opportunity to order takeout (still not dining indoors due to COVID). They made multiple mistakes on the order and, ultimately, the food -- with the exception of the delicious chicken karaage -- was just not that flavorful or tasty. Mashumen's menu describes the oichi tofu dish as coming with "mixed vegetables" and "light soy." When we clicked on the "Order Online" button their website, a quick glance at the oichi tofu we selected made us excited to see that those "mixed vegetables" would include bean sprouts, bok choy, and mushrooms (see screenshot). When we opened the dish, instead of this beautiful array of vegetables... it was just a sad mix of peas, corn, and carrots, the same kind you get from a bag in the frozen aisle. How frustrating to look back & realize the description on the online ordering service was for a completely different dish! Also, the "light soy" that came with the tofu was not rich in umami flavor as expected, but instead a strange & cloyingly sweet broth. We also ordered spicy miso ramen, which was fine, but nothing spectacular. The broth was overly salty without depth of flavor, and thick to the point of being more like a sauce (and we are familiar with ramen broths that are rich & gelatinous from bones & shells being cooked gently for hours; this was not that). And probably the least important, but still contributing to the overall let-down of an experience: they neglected to include the spice mayo dip listed in the chicken karaage description. read more

I need to start this by saying how sweet and courteous the older gentleman that served us was. I just loved his presence! His immediate greeting upon walking through the door was so warm. Aside from the food, he was a great highlight to my dining experience here. I ordered their Ma-Yu Ramen which has a creamy tonkotsu based broth. Food came out in a timely manner, the presentation was great! It smelled so good. I immediately dove in for the hot broth and wow, it was decadent, hearty and so rich. The noodles had a great consistency, not too gummy and had a decent bounce as you chew. A really nice, big slice of the chashu along with some veggies such as bean sprouts, mushrooms and more. The egg is definitely my favorite part when I order ramen. It was cooked to perfection! I loved the creaminess of the yolk. Food was plentiful. The only thing that was a little disappointing was their chashu. Great addition to the Cville food scene - we've really need a ramen place! I got the Mayu, which sold me on the "roasted garlic oil," and my husband got the Mashu. Charlottesville rejoice! I went to UVA for graduate school from 2012-2014, and know full well how hard it was to get good, authentic Asian food. Back in town for a wedding this weekend, and decided to try this out for a late night to-go order. I ordered the spicy miso ramen with an extra char sui portion, brought it back to my hotel room, and was delighted with what I found. Noodles were perfectly cooked with just the right amount of bite. Broth was incredibly rich, but not overwhelmingly heavy, and the spice added a wonderful extra dimension. The char that they add to the char sui was spot on and added a wonderful smoky flavor to the dish. For anyone wanting a legit bowl of ramen in Charlottesville- this is it! read more

The chicken gyoza were tasty but generic, I didn't find anything outstanding taste wise. The tonkotsu ramen was delicious. What stood out the most for me was the savory broth, perfect soft boiled egg, and the mushrooms, everything else was tasty as well but generic for a tonkotsu ramen. We love this place. We did a pre wedding get together here and they sushi and apps they did were gorgeous! They serve things in wooden boats! Like actually boats with dry ice. So cool! Both were excellent however I thought mine were better because it had a stronger flavor from a chili/spice paste that was in the bowl. Neither were spicy! We also got the pork buns, which were freaking phenomenal. The noodles were stuck together in the ramen bowls like previous reviewers noted but overall not a problem. Wife and I tried this spot for the first time this weekend. Solid new go-to for ramen in Charlottesville! We got the chicken karaage for appetizer, I had the Mashu ramen and my wife had the Shoyu ramen. The broth was tasty and the bowl was full with fresh ingredients.
