Was craving some hot soup and took my parents to Mashumen while they were visiting. We shared a chicken karage and ordered two tonkotsu ramen and one mashu ramen. I absolutely adore the presentation of the ramen and it tasted as great as it looked. The broth was flavorful, there was a good noodle to meat ratio, and I could weirdly taste each individual flavor with each bite if that makes sense. The owner was attentive and respectful towards us and he really gave me caring old grandpa vibes. The only issue that occurred was nothing about the food or service but for some reason my dad got charged the wrong amount on his credit card? We got it figured out though! After looking at the other Yelp reviews I discovered they have a sushi bar and now I'm super excited to come back Cville since I'll be living within walking distance to Mashumen - expect me to be a regular! ;) read more

First place I took my wife to eat in Charlottesville va because she wanted sushi. Wow very clean and modern inside and great atmosphere. The service was quick and very nice. The chef came out and introduced himself and thanked us for coming in. He told us about the new sushi bar. Okay all the food we had was amazing. We had the golden dragon roll, the Spiderman roll, and shared the chicken yakiaoba. I am giving 5 stars for exceptional service and delicious food. It's a bit pricey but well worth the price. Good value for what you pay. read more

It's good! Great ambience, food is solid. The service is a little slow. I've had a couple different kinds of Ramen and enjoyed both. My fiancé loves their spicy tuna rolls. I enjoyed the vegetables roll. Tofu is good, Chashu pork is good. In all honesty, this is the first Japanese restaurant restaurant I've been to, so it could just be that I don't like Japanese food all that much, but it's a little bit of a flat flavor profile. read more

Very nice restaurant ambiance. Nice friendly servers. Unfortunately I had the spicy vegetarian ramen and it was probably the worst soup I've ever had. The broth upon tasting made me so sad. It ruined the rest of whatever was in the soup, too. I was very surprised about this because I usually love most soup even if it's a plain simple bland soup. Don't know how this one has been messed up this bad. It can't be fixed. I've had vegetarian broth ramen at other places and while they aren't amazing they are all still pretty good and edible along with the noodles and veggies in the soup. The other person got chicken broth ramen and said it was pretty good. read more

Mashumen - Vegetarian Spicy miso Ramen ... unforgettably bad, very sad and sorry to say :'( - Ramen Near Me - Charlottesville, Virginia

Mashumen's ramen is full of flavor, tasty, and filled with perfectly cooked bouncy not soggy noodles. Mashumen is definitely under hyped in my opinion because I feel like the ramen is on par with the ramen you would find in big cities given that it's located in Charlottesville. I got the Tantanmen which had sweet, savory ground pork and wavy egg noodles. The broth for the Tantanmen was very delicious and a little spicy. My boyfriend decided to be adventurous and get the MashuGiant. We expected the ramen bowl to be huge like those type of food speed eating challenges since it was $23 but it was actually a doable filling size for a large eater. The MashuGiant was just as tasty as the Tantanmen so it doesn't seem like you can go wrong with any ramen choice. We went on a Tuesday and apparently they don't have sushi on this day of the week but I'd like to try their sushi next time! read more

Unfortunately, I really didn't like this place. I just moved to the area and was excited to try it but it was the worst 20 bucks I've spent in a while. I got the spicy miso ramen and it was really disappointing. The broth was okay, not really spicy though. The noodles were really gross- they were chewy with a very weird consistency. Though they looked the same, they did not taste or feel like the noodles I've had at other ramen places. The bamboo shoots tasted old so I didn't eat those. The lady checking me out (I did takeout) was really nice and the place looks clean, so I'll give it 2 stars for that. The food though was pretty awful- I don't think I'll return :( read more

Best ramen place in Charlottesville. Parking lot at back! Pork meat is really great!

Service was quick. Food was meh. I'd skip the sushi and maybe stick to the other dishes. Not a lot of non-cooked sushi options but in retrospect probably for the best. Pricing was okay. Probably wouldn't go back read more

Found another sushi place in Cville. I love all the flavors and sauces on the rolls. My favorite is the shogun roll. It comes on a fancy boat like plate. Another roll I liked was I believe the Fuji roll. I have a hard time having raw fish so I always get cooked rolls. And this place caters to a lot of cooked rolls. The service is on point, the place is usually empty which is nice. I introduced my bf to this place and he loved it too. This is now our go to sushi place here in Cville. read more

Love eating here! Had to try it again since they now serve sushi and the presentation of the sushi surprised us! We were a little skeptical to try the sushi since we saw a few reviews that said it wasn't good. We decided to give it a try anyways. Glad we did! Their spicy Tuna is on point. Definitely the best I've tried in C'ville. The crab avocado salad is really good as well. I usually always order the Shoyu Ramen but since December 2021 I felt that it is being cooked a little different. I used to be able to drink the broth but now it's just a little too salty. So now I just eat the noodles and toppings. But other than that, service is always great and food is tasty. Definitely going back for some sushi. read more

Must go! I always go to D.C. for ramen, but am happy to have found this place in Cville for all my ramen needs while at UVa. I ordered creamy veg ramen and Tonkotsu ramen with two iced Thai teas for pick-up. Because of COVID, Mashumen is offering curb-side pickup and they have their number posted on a sign outside. The hand-off was painless and efficient. The food??? Immaculate! Not only was everything packaged well and each item labeled clearly, but the broth was full of flavor and the veggies so fresh. Each bite was better than the next. My only complaint was that the noodles stuck together a bit, even after the broth was poured in. Granted, with online ordering, I am not compelled to dock Mashumen a star since everything else ran so smoothly. 5/5 read more

So excited that a ramen place opened up! We ordered everything to go and it was all packaged excellently. I appreciate the amount of broth to noodle ratio. We also ordered a side of the chashu pork and was very pleasantly surprised with how much they gave! We ordered 4 bowls total, and unfortunately they forgot my broth :( but the owner was very nice about it and we were able to turn around and grab it. Overall the taste was adequate I think I would have enjoyed it more if I was dining in (as most noodle dishes are, should be eaten fairly quickly). I had the tonkotsu ramen, and my husband got the spicy miso. The broth was flavorful and the portion size was perfect. I love that they had a vegetarian option as well!! Overall I cannot wait to go back and try the other types. This is the perfect meal any day!! read more

Great new ramen spot on JPA! As a student, it's nice to have someplace much closer than downtown Cville that has good quality ramen. I've dined in a couple times and it has always been well spaced-out and feels safe. It also has a very attractive interior. As for the food, I really enjoy their ramen. I typically get the Mayu ramen, which is a creamy tonkotsu ramen, and they have a good selection of add-ins so you can customize it to your taste. So the broth and other ingredients are wonderful, but I would note that they give a LOT of noodles and I've never been able to finish. They have a selection of other small dishes that look good, I've always wanted to try their dessert-y mashu buns but unfortunately they've never been available when I've visited. Still, I would definitely recommend! read more

I'm really glad there is a nice ramen place in Charlottesville, especially since it's just on JPA! The space is very modern and all the tables are spaced out, so eating in feels safe. I ordered the Mashu Ramen, which came out relatively quickly (~10 min wait). I'd definitely recommend getting this, because the broth was great and the toppings were also great. The chashu on time was my FAVORITE part, since it was super flavorful and had a great texture. The noodles themselves were just okay, but the rest of the dish made up for them. Their prices are a little high for bowls of ramen, but I suppose it is okay since they're the only ramen place on this side of town. I'd definitely come again! read more

Mashumen has earned its place in our rotation of go-to spots. The interior is open and modern and the service is friendly and attentive. The spicy miso ramen does not disappoint. At my last visit, they gave a whole egg for no extra charge instead of the usual half of one which was a lovely and welcome surprise. Perhaps the most telling testament to its quality is that, unlike some other ramen places, the broth does not leave me feeling queasy from being too greasy and heavy - it is rich, flavorful and relatively light. The meat melts in your mouth. While I prefer the wavy noodles over the straight noodles, both are good. Hits the spot. read more

This was our second time visiting and our first time trying the (new!) sushi menu--was pleasantly surprised with the presentation of the sushi platter and appreciated that everything came out fresh, especially in terms of temperature. -1 star for speed of service (though they were busier than our previous visit) and overall flavor (would love a saltier broth). read more

Mashumen - Beautiful Four Seasons roll on a lil bridge - Ramen Near Me - Charlottesville, Virginia

Let me state at the outset, this review is for Mashumen's sushi ONLY. I have not tried their ramen, which many folks rave about. The sushi however, is third rate although acceptable. Sashimi is served in giant slabs. What a traditional sushi restaurant would serve in three edible pieces, here arrives in one big hunk. Eating with chopsticks, you can either stuff the whole thing into your face and risk choking, or ask for a knife and fork so you can cut it. Some of the fish is good quality, some not so good, as if they have been keeping it in the freezer too long. Rolls are all served inside-out. Again, in a traditional sushi restaurant they would be served in the usual way, with a much less massive amount of rice. The rice too is mediocre in my opinion. On the plus side, the servers here are amazingly professional and friendly. For that reason alone, I would be tempted to return here and try the ramen -- but there is a deal breaker: they added $4 to my bill for using a credit card to pay the bill. My rule of thumb is to steer clear of restaurants that do this. One last note: the dreaded Escolar is on the menu -- they call it White Tuna even though it is not tuna at all. What it is is a fish that can and often does cause almost instant diarrhea. Make sure that is not included in your meal. read more

The place was clean, parking was good, service was good. Execution was TERRIBLE! The pork in buns was drier than beef jerky, I didn't eat it bc I was afraid I'd get sick, the ramen was ok but had pork in it so I was scared, the dumplings were the only good part and were room temp. The coke was good if that helps. Food looked so good I was excited, but it fell so flat. I ended the night in the bathroom. read more

Place was nice and clean. Looked like a one person operation. Food was decent. We had three ramens bowls and a side order, total was ok at $53 but whole check ended up at $71 with tip and credit card charge. She didnt tell me about the credit card charge versus using cash. Not terrible but not great. Was here with friends and we all had the ramen because they weren't serving sushi the night we went. 3 of us got the tonkatsu. It was good overall but the pork was pretty fatty and the broth had a bit too much salt. The egg was great though. read more

Came here with my family after a day of hiking in the mountains. We were super excited as this place has a lovely decor which promises an authentic Japanese experience. The ramen was good, my daughter got the veggie and liked it. My wife the spicy ramen and enjoyed it as well. However, the sushi is not so good. My son and I split a tuna lovers plate and some other rolls. The presentation was fancy if a bit large. I wanted to love the sushi, I wanted to like the sushi, but ultimately I think this was the worst sushi experience I've ever had. Bland rice, bland shrimp Tempura (how?), and the crunchiest chewiest salmon skin I've ever had. Come for the ramen, don't touch the sushi. read more

The food was authentic and absolutely delicious. Best in town and highly recommended..!!

Ramen might be one of my favorite foods and I'm thrilled that there's a new spot in town where I can come to enjoy a steaming bowl on a cold winter day! We came for a Sunday lunch and had the whole space to ourselves. Surprisingly, the appetizers here were pretty spot on! I'd recommend you try the agedashi tofu and their kaarage (japanese fried chicken). The pork buns were decent (and well priced) but I probably wouldn't get again. The ramen bowls were delicious and I hope that people give this place a shot! read more

This ramen restaurant reminds me of CA ramen places and that really hits home for me. We ordered from here a couple times for delivery and each time was spot on. I was in Charlottesville on business and decided to stop by for lunch. Had the chicken karaage and the tonkotsu ramen. Food was average, but the waitress was very attentive (hence 4 vs 3 stars). The karaage came with a Mayo type sauce which was unusual. More accustomed to seeing it with a lemon wedge or two. The ramen had a flavorful broth but the pork slices could have been more tender and charred. read more
