Of the many people who had recommended the Masala Twist, only one had been disappointed. Also, the restaurant is usually busy - a good sign, I thought.
As (bizarrely) they still didn't do carry-outs despite being opened for a while, I invited some friends down to sample the curries on offer. What a let down. The pakora arrived with a hefty waft of stale deep fry oil. Poppadoms were soft. Butter Chicken - the sauce had a texture like something you would spread on a sandwich. Lucknowi Murgh was bland. Chilli Garlic Chicken was horrific, no subtly - just bits of meat floating in a fiery liquid. Poor, poor, poor. This is not Indian/Punjabi cooking as it should be.
To contrast, I'd been in the Edinburgh branch of Mother India Cafe the week before. There, as the very first mouthful of Chicken Karahi explodes on your tongue, you're reminded why Indian food is so fantastic. Rich, complex flavours - they know how to do it.
The Masala Twist unfortunately, is just a sub-standard curry shop.
