I used to think this was the best Indian place out there. It's still an good place, but it's nowhere near as amazing as it was years ago. This restaurant was bought by new owners recently, and with the new management apparently came a different chef. Some recipes changed, and quality has noticeably slipped. The food is a lot greasier, there's sometimes now a distinct layer of oil floating on top of the curry that wasn't there before. Also, in getting take-out, we've had a problem now of them getting our order wrong several times now (and with my wife's food allergies, getting the wrong order can be a serious problem). The food is still delicious, and their buffet is a good deal for a quick lunch. . .but the new management has let this place slide a little and I think they are still trading on the outstanding reputation of the former owners. read more

It might, indeed, be the best Indian food in town. But that isn't necessarily a ringing endorsement. As a visitor from out of town, I found this place really lack-luster. It was certainly popular among the erudite crowd; other tables were clearly filled with college faculty talking about poetry, liberation, and world travels. Which made for good eavesdropping. But that doesn't make up for re-heated food, limited spices, and sugared Kashmiri bread. (Sugared!?) Plus, the place was slightly grimy. (I say this as someone who has eaten from food carts in both north and south India, so, it's not like I'm super persnickety.) Tables sticky, plastic tumblers worn, no straws offered. But it was mostly the service that was odd. Well -- the service was off, and it was odd. The server checked on each table probably every 5 minutes, which was a bit disruptive and mildly insincere. I never felt like she actually wanted to do anything about any table's dining experience. And the man working the floor seated me at my table, confirmed that I was eating alone, and then just became flummoxed, eventually just shifting the other table setting over about 2 inches, instead of removing it completely. Oh, and because my stomach is a bottomless pit today, I actually was going to go ahead and order dessert, but they never gave me the chance and merely brought the bill. I dunno. Maybe they just wanted me and my magazine-reading, single-dining self out of there. I wouldn't bother returning, personally. Especially if you are an out of towner. read more

Decided to finally check out this spot before jumping plane to leave. So glad I did! I love Indian food but like any ethnic food, it has to be done right and this place gets it. I ordered the lamb curry with garlic naan. The curry I ordered as a seven in spice. Very good without the slickness overpowering the natural flavor of the lamb and curry. Please note: I'm original from south Louisiana and I quickly learned when moving here that what I called 'seasoned well' was what someone else called 'spicy'. I've been eating spicy all my life. Masala is a solid restaurant - very close to Taste of India overall. Masala is about half the floor space so a little more intimate. Overall cost at Masala is probably 5-10% less only because drinks were a little less costly. Masala drink sizes are a little larger. The "hot" spicyness is very manageable here (less spicy than 'hot' at Taste of India.) Service was very good. Cloth napkins, glass glasses. Variety of 'assorted breads' was good with meal. Mango juice and lassi were good. Water refilled promptly. Extra rice offered w leftover food. The only negative for me was the carpets were on the dirty side - all businesses need to wash carpets every couple months to keep fresh looking. I like the atmosphere a little more at Taste of India, but both are good. read more

Let me start by saying the food is delicious. This is my first time eating Indian food and I am pretty satisfied. The reason from my 3 star review would be the service. I walked in and it took I know about 5-7 minutes to acknowledge me. After, the guy was pretty nonchalant the entire time. He came back about 20 minutes later to see if I needed a refill. Being located close to home, Masala has been a go to carry-out location. If I haven't meal prepped, I start out my Monday's with Indian Monday. I tend to always get the same meal, the chicken patia and a garlic naan. It's a boneless chicken marinated in a sweet and spicy mango sauce with a variety of veggies. The single meal take out is a large portion, comes with a bed of rice that is more than enough, and will easily feed two. The buffet is not expansive and doesn't have the sheer number of options as other Indian buffets, but the options it did have were fantastic. Love, love, love this place! The buffet is decent and a great lunch even if you want to take it and go, but my favorite way to enjoy the Masala experience is to go for dinner. The tikki masala is incredible. I usually go with chicken. Also, GET THE NAAN! I always get two orders of the pashwari (sp) naan, so I can take one home. It is sweet and a little salty. Do not pass it up! They have lamb options and vegetarian options. Super attentive staff and a quick kitchen. When you order your food, let them know what level of heat you want. I like my Indian food very spicy, but they can make it mild as well. Definitely check out Masala if you like Indian food. Try lots of stuff, because I've never had a bad experience. Masala is located at beaumont center next to Sahara. This place is awesome! Portions are generous, food is flavorful, very fairly priced ($12.50 chicken tikka masala, $3.50 garlic naan), and their indian hot actually has some spiciness to it! I've only ordered the food to-go, so I cannot comment on the in-restaurant experience, but the service is quick and food is neatly packed. I highly recommend this place and a plus is that it's not located on Nicholasville Rd, so traffic isn't as bad. They also have online ordering through yelp, so you can forego a phone call. So far this is our favorite Indian food in town. The Korma is delicious. They will make their dishes legitimately spicy, which I love. I usually opt for a medium. Their garlic nan is fresh, perfectly cooked. I also love their papdum with mango chutney, and their a-char which is a fermented green mango for a good side, it cuts the heat as well! If the very mention of Indian food makes you salivate, this is the place for you. This is the best Indian restaurant in Lexington, in my opinion, and I have done extensive research on this subject. The restaurant appearance & ambience is what you would expect for an Indian restaurant. But this is not why you come here. The food is the reason! The signs at the lunch buffet always make me wish I could skip work and eat lunch there. Alas, as that is not my work ethic, the husband and I usually go for dinner or pick up takeout on almost a weekly basis. The chicken tikka masala and lamb roganjosh are my favorites - I prefer hot. I ventured off and tried "Indian Hot" once, and I will not make that mistake again. It was still delicious, but it was a "burn a hole through your stomach" type of delicious. So if you are into that, go for it! The husband always gets the korma with chicken or lamb, sometimes medium, sometimes hot, with the garlic naan. There aren't many things that I miss having to be GF now, but that is one of them. The basmati rice is also delish. I wish I knew why theirs is so much better than mine. The Good: the food, the prices, the wait staff, the buffet. The Bad: same old same old for Indian restaurant decor, service could be better, very cold in there. The Rundown: just to get this out of the way, it was cold in there, not see your breath cold, but keep your jacket on cold, what is up with that?! As far as Indian restaurants go, this one ranks up there as one of the better around. The food comes out pretty quick and tastes great. We ordered our food Indian Hot, which we can handle, but for the average joe, I wouldn't try this. The food is served in the traditional manner with the rice separate from the meat and sauce so you can make your own portion. Generally one dish should be enough for two people as well. Where they could improve is in their customer service, though I don't expect too much because every Indian restaurant I haver we been to is like this, standoffish, staring, curt, this just comes along with the territory. The decor is just like every other Indian restaurant as well, baron walls, mirrors, glass over the tablecloth, even red napkins. The Impression: as in the past I will come back for their food, after all that is why you go out to eat. There is nothing overwhelmingly amazing about it but I just really like Indian food. I've been eating here for years, and it's still one of my favorites. The lunch buffet is a GREAT deal, and I love that they offer it on the weekends. I don't know the names of all the items, but I can say that I've tried everything on the buffet and like them all! I can't give them 5 stars because I have had better Indian food (Deep India in Cincinnati - OMG YUM!). But for Lexington this is the place to go. The one thing I don't like about this restaurant is the perfume smell. The last few times I've gone there has been a perfume/air freshener/incense?? smell that is WAY too strong. It was so strong once that I thought I was going to have to leave. Like so strong you can't taste your food. This restaurant has changed management since the beginning of the year. I miss the older man who was always so friendly, but the food has not changed at at. (Only the new fragrance has changed.) read more

I have read many great reviews of Masala, and I have to say, food-wise they are all very accurate. I went for lunch today and had their wonderful buffet, which I would ordinarily recommend. There was, however, a problem which had (hopefully) nothing to do with the taste. As I stood by the cashier desk to pay, the gentleman, who I believe is the owner, was delivering more food to the buffet. He sneezed while doing so, making no real effort to cover the sneeze. As he was returning to the kitchen, he sneezed twice more. To his credit, he did make more of an effort to cover these two sneezes, but then, right in front of me, he wiped his nose on the back of his hand. There was a very large bottle of hand sanitizer on the cashier's counter, but he made no effort to use it. Instead he continued on his way into the kitchen. I could see through the porthole window of the kitchen door that he, again, made no effort to wash his hands. Instead he stood over the stove with food cooking and then immediately came back out to the dining room to clean tables. Just for the record, I am far from being a germophobe. I do, however, work in a medical setting and I see far too often the effects of not at least using a bit of sanitizer. Maybe this was a one-off incident, but I kind of doubt it. I won't be going back, which is disappointing because I really liked the food. read more

My husband found Masala when in town for work a few months ago. Lucky for me I accompanied him on another trip to Lexington this week, so I could have dinner here too. The food is fresh, flavorful, and in very good portions. Not only are the portions substantial there is plenty of your protein choice in the dishes as well (my experience has found many Indian restaurants skimp on the meats). I had the Biryani Khana which had 3 huge shrimp, lots of chicken, and lamb chunks perfectly cooked. My husband got his favorite, Chicken Tikka Masala that didn't disappoint. Their Nann is homemade! Absolutely the best Nann I have had in the Mid-West so far, you can tell it is made to order, fresh, light, and tasty. We eat a lot of Indian food either cooked at home or from restaurants and Masala is one of the best we have had. Being that we are still dealing with the pandemic their attention to the cleanliness of the table, chairs and servers were excellent. If there were any downsides to this restaurant it would be the atmosphere and the carpeting. Carpeting does not belong in restaurants, inevitably it becomes dirty looking and in this case, it feels a bit tacky. Simply removing it would increase the overall appearance and atmosphere of this food fantastic restaurant! But, please don't let that stop you from either eating here or getting carry out because you will miss an excellent meal. read more
