Have ordered to-go a few times but went in person on Sunday and man...it definitely tastes better in person! I ordered chai, chicken makhani, and garlic naan. The chai was okay but the chicken makhani and garlic naan were incredible. The serving size is HUGE. We had enough for two leftover meals! Service was good and relatively quick. It's not super fancy just about 15 tables inside but you will be full and happy like I was when I left. I would say my usual order and experience is 4 star but when we went the other day? I ordered saag paneer which is so delicious, chicken tikka masala which has so much flavor the only this is I wish it was made with dark meat inside of white because I feel like the white meat is tougher and drier. Every time I come to Kentucky, it's generally for a big racing event so of course people are waiting in line to go to Tony's or Frank and Dino's or Dudleys. But no trip for me is complete without coming to masala. The food here is just phenomenal. It's a touch on the pricey side which I feel like it's kind of been a trend with Indian food as of late. But you won't be disappointed with the quality or the portion size. This is just a little hole in the wall and a shopping center. That's pretty close to the freeway so it's very convenient to get to. The non-is so fluffy and hot and it just makes a perfect pairing with the sauce even though I know that's not how you're supposed to eat it. I also love all of the vegetarian dishes. This time I got the mushroom matar and the spice level was just exquisite. I took home all my leftovers for a meal the next day. And even though I had to refrigerator, I was gross and let it sit out and then I ate it anyways ....cold. And you know what... They had a small lunch buffet going on when I stopped in, which is a surprising development these days. However, I was happy that I got takeout as the buffet didn't include enough vegetarian variety to make it worthwhile for me. I asked for Indian hot on my chickpeas (and got a raise of the eyebrow for having done so from the people working there). My channa masala was richly flavored and delivered more of a sustained burn than an immediate hit. It was hot enough to be reflux inducing (sadly, my taste buds and my esophageal sphincter don't always get along), but delicious. Their interpretation of mulligatawny soup was a bit odd; it looked more like sambar and the taste was a bit more sour than I expected. I am so glad to have discovered this gem of a restaurant in Lexington! Located in Beaumont near the library, Masala is in the same strip mall as Sahara. Walking in, my fiancé and were seated right away as it wasn't too busy on a Friday afternoon. When we were brought out menus I was really impressed at the wide selection of options- including lots of vegetarian dishes! All entrees are served with (an abundance) of rice and the diner can choose their preferred level of spice- ranging from mild to "indian hot". I decided to try something new & went with the Eggplant Bhartha, hot. It was very good but definitely spicy! We split an order of garlic naan as well and that was extreeeemely delicious. The wait staff at Masala were all very friendly and attentive as well. This place is definitely worth checking out if you like Indian cuisine! read more

Wow, I can't believe I missed out on this gem when I was working in Lexington! The chicken tikka masala, gulab jamun was one of the best I've ever had! The chicken was moist and not dry. I ordered mild and it was not spicy, it was creamy and the sauce was amazing! My only complaint was I didn't order more! The naan was delicious nice and yeasty, freshly made it was still hot when I got it. The basmati rice was a little dry. But the Gulab Jamun made up for it! Gulab Jamun is one of my favorite desserts its a fried dough in syrup. The cinnamon-coated dough made a difference! The syrup is sweet but complimented the dough. read more

I was told to meet at this Indian Buffet... I was excited, however, what it REALLY was, was a hot table, 5 ft in length with less than 15 items. The only entrees were completely covered in sauce... of gravy consistency... I ate because I was invited, but I could tell my host was a bit embarrassed by the lack of variety. Wow! This place was really really good. I got the Chicken Tikka Masala and let me tell you... I was battling a SEVERE case of appendicitis at the time and STILL finished my plate! Mmmmmmm..... I didn't know that this place would be the last place I would eat at while I still had an appendix, but I'm glad it was. I sent my appendix out with a BANGIN 5/5 STAR meal! Unfortunately, due to the appendicitis, I missed an important exam but this Indian food lifted my spirits and made things feel better. I loved it. I will happily eat here again. COVID 19 delivery. Food still arrived fresh and hot! I ordered chicken curry and allo palak, as well as garlic naan and samosas. I ordered both the curry and the palak "hot" (level three of four on their spice scale). Both were pleasantly spicy and full of flavor. I particularly enjoyed the allo palak, which is made of potatoes, sliced tomatoes, and cream. It was so creamy and smooth. The naan could have been a little crispier, but it was still garlicky and topped with fresh herbs. The samosas were crispy and hot. Extensive menu (mostly Pakistani I think) full of chicken, lamb, and pescatarian dishes. Lots of appetizers, vegetarian offerings. Been eating at (and ordering from) Masalas for the longest time and they are the best Indian food restaurant in Lexington! Their sauces are amazing and they do a good job with adding heat. Portions are very large and definitely shareable or good for a next day lunch. So much more fun to go in person because the owners are so sweet and personable and always remember and greet regulars. Takeout Indian food is already wonderful but once you have fresh garlic naan you'll know what you've been missing. I have been trying as many Indian restaurants around town as I can, and thus far, this is my absolute favorite. Let's start with the atmosphere: quaint, homey, and personal. From the outside you wouldn't expect much and that's the first mistake. Service is always quick, polite, and helpful if you aren't sure what to get. I have had the Lamb Vindaloo, Chicken Mahkani, and Chicken Masala. Every one of those dishes has been amazing. The portions are amazing and you can easily share or get two meals out of it. But the garlic Naan. OH MY LORT. The smell pulls you in and the taste transports you. I've had an instant food coma on each visit. My wife has been afraid of trying new food for years. I finally got her to go a few months back. Tonight she actually asked to go here. Then, the ultimate declaration. If she could only have one type of food the rest of her life, Masala was it. All excellent and held up well on the trip home. More than enough food for two meals. Raita was a little runny (I prefer a creamier consistency) but that may be more about hanging out in a bag with hot food on the drive home than the restaurant. Will remove it next time or better yet, dine in. Service was friendly and efficient. Beer and liquor options looked plentiful. We had been laying low and eating at home for a while but on drive, we passed Masala and that is all that we could talk about for weeks. We missed them so much. Finally, we decided go and eat there in person. They did not disappoint!! They food was wonderful and any issues we may have worried about during this time, they handled with great professionalism. We went there during dinner time and the tables were spaced out and all the servers were masked and gloved. The food was perfect and came out quickly. We had Mixed Grill Tandoori, Chicken Korma, Lamb Rogan Joshe, the big basket of breads and Kheer. We ate family style and felt almost "normal" again. The service was attentive and we never lacked for anything. We purposely ordered too much so we could enjoy leftovers at home. The food is pretty consistent. There is nothing earth shattering but choices in Lexington are pretty limited. If you are looking for good basic and generic Indian cuisine, this is fine. If you are looking for Mughalia, Pakistani, or Bengali flavor profiles, this is not the place. I have taken folks who want to cautiously enter the shallow end of Indian cuisine and they have liked it. If you want something more complex, head to Louisville or Cincinnati.
