I mean the food isn't horrible but it's also not a place I would recommend ever to anyone. It's very average food that they have the nerve to serve in small portions. The most disappointing part of the meal was the chilli chicken. It tastes like chilli chicken made from one of those cheapo Indian food marinades you get at your basic grocery store. Delivery order came early and smoking hot off of the cooker! Every item was delicious! Just the right level of spicy (low medium) for us. The sauce on the Lamb Korma was good enough to eat on its own. We went heavy on the appetizers which were all very good -samosa chana chaat, aloo tikki chaat, and pakoras, pappadam, and naan. Did not go to the restaurant so can't comment except to say if a delivery order was this good I would expect in house service to be top notch as well. Stopped by on recommendation by a staff member at Fort Williams Historical Park. Had the Murphy Korma with garlic naan and a mango lassi. The sauce was extraordinarily good - deep flavor and rich. We had a fantastic meal. The staff was really friendly. And the food was top-notch. I travel a lot, and often seek out the local Indian place because, well, that's often the most reliably good food in the English-speaking world. Samosas and pakoras were outstanding. We had a chicken korma and my "test dish", aloo gobi, that I've gotten at dozens of restaurants. Masala grill passed with flying colors -- great flavors, great texture. I asked for and got some chili sauce because I like mine scorching. The portions -- we had another full dinner the next night on the left overs, a picnic on the beautiful Thunder Bay waterfront. Try Masala Grill -- you won't be disappointed. Tip: parking is in the rear of the building that looks like a giant house. I called long distance to order a dinner for delivery to a local family member locked down (resident, alone in a nursing home on the Fort William side) who was eating less and less due to isolation fatigue. I was hoping to encourage her appetite with something delectable, but which was easily manageable on a delicate stomach. This is a wonderful place to enjoy a delicious, authentic Indian meal. The food is incredibly flavorful, the butter chicken, pekoras, palak paneer, the vegetarian selection, not to mention the fresh nan keep me going back for more. We didn't realize that they have a lunch buffet when we went, but figured a buffet would be great since we'd be able to sample a bunch of dishes. The buffet has 5 vegetarian and 1 chicken dish, plus stale naan. The food was very good, but for the price I would expect more choice from a buffet. I also had chai tea, which tasted off. First and foremost, one must understand that this is the ONLY Indian restaurant in Thunder Bay. My review is based on the fact that I am from Toronto, a city with MANY Indian restaurants and where quality and price must be at least reasonable in order for a restaurant to survive. That being said, being a lover of Indian food, I had asked around as to where I could find some in Thunder Bay and was directed to Masala Grille. I have met the owner and one of the cooks and must say that they were both very pleasant people, but unfortunately this is a review based on food and not personalities. When I went to MG, I had butter chicken, curried chickpeas (can't remember the name), pakoras and samosas. Unfortunately they all tasted as if they were some No Name brand mix slapped together and served to unknowing customers. The butter chicken is by far the worst I have ever had in my life. The samosas tasted like they were heated from some Loblaws Blue Menu box. The portions were MINISCULE compared to Indian restaurants and the prices are at least 40% higher than what you pay for in Toronto. Also, the food made me so sick in a way that Indian food has never done to me. I feel as though this restaurant is milking the fact that there is no competition in Thunder Bay and that Thunder Bay locals probably don't know what good Indian food is. Hopefully someone else will open up an Indian restaurant up here and take some market share away from these guys. read more

Visiting family in Thunder Bay - they took us here for dinner before a movie. We were so impressed! Masala Grille has a very nice, beautiful ambience, and is also friendly and casual. The menu has great options to share dishes in a group, or, you can partake of the buffet too. The food is exceptional, and the service is friendly and great. Try the Mango Lassi to drink - delicious! We find it a charming restaurant with good if not great indian food. Many Toronto Indian restaurants have moved to buffets where the food all taste the same. Yep...I am a fan of Masala Grille. I love Indian food and make it at home quite often. The overall feel of the restaurant is classy and historic. Definitely and old home that has been converted. The wait staff is uber friendly and great to talk to. I looked over the menu on a Friday evening and saw some great options but decided to go for the buffet since there were a variety of vegetarian dishes. I am glad I did because each dish was enjoyable and I went back for seconds. I wish there was more options for making the entrees spicy but my overall experience was great and I would come back. read more

Next time i visit Thunder Bay I will be back to enjoy the incredible food. The decor is warm and interesting. I was seated at a table in the sunroom which was quite lovely. Immediately upon arrival the first thing that greets you is the delicious aroma coming from the kitchen. They have a regular menu with a nice variety of veg and meat dishes. I decided to go for the buffet. At 22.95 it seemed like a great deal. The sauces are homemade here. No cans. No bottles. Everything has been made with special care and love of food. I've never liked dal. After having the dal here it is in my top five favourites. I also ate spinach paneer which was incredible. The two meat dishes were superb. I will dream about my meal here for many months to come. I would recommend dinner or lunch here to everyone. Go here. Keep this place alive so I can dine again next time I visit. read more

Boy, what a let down. Rice was old, set up hard and flaked with a fork. Full of lumps. Lamb ragjanosh (sp?) was nice and spicey, but the lamb was in such small pieces the sauce overcame any lamb flavor. Good news is the sauce made the rice edible, but just barely. We've been here twice now and we loved both our visits. I had the dinner buffet the other night. They had a nice mix of beef, chicken, vegetarian and other dishes. Naan, rice and salad too. They also have some Thai dishes which we love but have not tried yet. We sat on the front porch and enjoyed a partial view of the lake and the Sleeping Giant. It's a beautiful old home in a tree lined neighborhood but on a main street easy to find. Park around back and walk to the front door. Great service, super friendly staff, excellent food and ambiance! Save room for a nice selection of desserts including Key Lime cheesecake and Kheer. read more

Entered the restaurant, a nice spice aromatic ambiance with rich Indian kitchen colours welcomed me - Excellent, what else you need in a restaurant where the entrance enhance your craving for something tastier. Yes the décor with silk and embroidered clothes in rich Indian colors of saffrons/reds/browns/yellow are just done marvelous. 5***** There was no body at the guest waiting counter, nor a bell to ring to tell that a customer is waiting for to be seated. I went inside to see if someone can help me - NO. I came back and waited for next 5 minutes and just as I thought about going back some one appeared and asked me if I'm waiting for to be seated. I said 'YES'. The girl took me to a corner of the restaurant having a table with two chairs. She asked me to be seated till she brings the menu. There were only two group of people eating at that time whole restaurant was empty, it was around 8:30 pm, she would might have provided me with a much better table near the windows but a table at the end of the restaurant were chosen by her. Not a good choice seeing the time and empty restaurant. 0* I ordered two dishes seeing the content of the vegetables in those dishes and the name given to them. It came with a bowl of rice and butter naan as I ordered. Way too much for a single guest, but I was not apprised about the quantity of the dishes etc. Anyways. From the name both dishes sounds like Indian dishes, but here the mistake goes. And as per the hostess it was my mistake that why I didn't ask her if both dishes are Indiana or Thai. I advised her that since in the menu you put the name of the dish similar to an Indian dish then why I will ask you such a question. Whatever. One dish has an authentic Indian flavour. Not much spicy , just the right kind of taste. But people eating bland food my find it spicy so you may request for lesser spices although that will take away the whole aroma of the dishes. Anyways. Another problem I cited was no spoon was given. It was expected that guest will eat fine quality Indian basmati rice with fork, the way oriental rice is eaten. Another big mistake. Fine Indian basmati rice is eaten with spoon not fork for the simple reason that when cooked each grain will remain separate from each other. So food get 4****. Service get 0*. When I was leaving I tried to strike a conversation with the hostess to praise e about the décor etc. but she was not at all interested to speak anything. So before I say anything further she finished the conversation, which was not started at first place, by saying the second dish which you said was not tasty is prepared as it should be and that is the dish most of our customers like the best. So in a way I was thrown out from the restaurant. Service again received 0* This is the only Indian restaurant in the region so I have no other option to visit again but I will wear a wig and remove my glasses. It's too bad - such a beautiful house and warm decor but the food is lacking. The lunch buffet was small. No tandoori chicken, no butter chicken, no dessert. The only bread option was naan - no papadums or roti or parathas. Frozen veggies in the curry. Sauces were all tomato based. Not enough paneer in the potato paneer. The key is value- and the price point here is far off. Food is ok but I would never go back. Maybe its my southern ontario roots where i know I can get samosa 3 for a buck, and up here in Thunder Bay samosa's are anywhere from 2-3 bucks and half the size! They had a vendor at summer in the parks and I spent $16 with no drink and it felt like a snack! I have been to Masala Grille twice before but have to say last night was the worst experience. We were a group of 6 of which 3 had the dinner buffet, 1 ordered Pad Thai and the other two just had snacks. To my surprise they only had two meat items one chicken and one beef. Chicken was ok but the beef karahi was really bad. Had two veg items, both were nothing special. One had just beans and potatoes. The other was mixed vegetables with some masala gravy and yogurt. The mixed lentil(dal) was good. Naan breads were really dry and the Plain pulao rice was extremely oily. The pakora's were ok. I didn't see any dessert item not even gulabjamon as part of the buffet. Every indian restaurant usually have 1 item for dessert. However, this was not the case here. As it is the only indian restaurant, they should really take care of the items they serve. This restaurant mostly caters to people who are not familiar with indian food at other places. Hence the great reviews. But if any of the patrons ever visit another restaurant, they will know the difference right away. My friend could barely eat her Pad Thai and hence just munched on the samosa's that we ordered as appetizers. For $19.95 per person + tax + tips, I would have had a better meal at any other restaurant including the Keg or even Moxie's. The 1 star I gave was due to the ambience and decor. Service is extremely slow. The appetizer which was 3 orders of Samosa took more than 45 mins to come to the table. If you have lots of time and money to waste, visit this restaurant, otherwise avoid it any cost. Horrible experience. All six of us regretted big time going there. read more
