This is a small, but tasty buffet! My favorite was their biryani and the mint chutney. What was more impressive was the owner/managers kindness! The buffet wasn't huge, and she let me know right away that almost all the food was spicy. I had my daughters with me, who don't handle a lot of spice well. I told her we would try it, and she offered to make them a few extra dishes. I thanked her, but told her not to trouble herself. The girls did try the food, but ended up eating mostly rice and a little bread. (Picky, but they tried some new things.) When I went to pay, the owner only charged me for my meal! She said the girls didn't eat much. Even so, they used silverware, dishes, took up space, etc. I really appreciated her kindness and wanted to spread the word about this underrated restaurant. We got the lamb masala and lamb biryani. Neither were flavorful enough; I think we're too used to spicier Indian meals. We were sad to find that they did not give raita with the biryani unless you ask. I called when I got home and the lady mentioned that we have to ask for it. I didn't even think of it -- first time here. Oh well. Good to know for future. If we're in the area, I may consider revisiting and trying a different dish. I dont usually like to share secret gems of mine, but I love this place so much. I work downtown and whenever I crave Pakistani food (not to be confused with indian food, but similar dishes), I come to Masala Grill. The workers at Masala Grill are so nice, work with a smile and serve you delicious foods from their Pakistan. There's a la carte or buffet during lunch time. I recommend the buffet as they add a little bit of everything to it. The lamb curry is amazing and so is their chicken. **PRO-TIP: Get water. Food is a flavorful spicy, but spicy nonetheless. read more

Been meaning to go here for a couple of weeks, and finally went yesterday. I was the first customer, and the lady there is super kind. Put out fresh, warm bread, and fried fish which is for Tuesday's buffet. The basmati rice was nice and flavorful as was everything else including the chicken tikka masala and the veggie pakora. It's OK in a pinch. Stopped in for lunch a while ago and it was okay. The staff was nice and helpful the atmosphere is set up for a quick lunch and that is okay too. I was not a major fan of the food, it was kind of bland, but it was good to satisfy a craving. The price was affordable and they offered a good selection of various foods from different areas. I will likely not go back anytime soon but that is just me. Food has to be worth the calories in order fo me to consistently go back. The woman working here was very nice and hospitable. The restaurant looked rundown and dirty. The restroom was filthy. I thought I was eating Indian food and I frequent a couple of places in town like Shalimar, which never disappoints. This must have been Pakistani food, and based on other reviews, is quite authentic. I found it to be repugnant and feared for my health. Even the bread was disappointing. Pita ? Where's the Naan ?! This lunch buffet is delicious! Fresh chicken and lamb with the best rice I have ever tasted. Lots of vegetarian options, also. okra, chana, lentils, and salad with cilantro based salad dressing, and raita (cucumber based). Stopped in for the lunch buffet. Busy around lunchtime, but the staff was efficient and friendly. They also seemed to do a good takeaway business as well. The buffet was very fairly priced at $8.99 and included bread, salad, pakoras, and several vegetables and meats. It's not a huge variety, but everything was cooked well and tasted excellent. The vegetarian biryani was the daily special and it was a hit. In fact, all of the vegetarian dishes were very good. Overall a very good meal at an incredibly reasonable price. I reached out to ask if the owner would make me something specific I was really wanting (Pakistani food that I couldn't find anywhere else in Louisville) and she went above and beyond to accommodate me! I base it for 3 reasons 1) Food like you are eating at home: You do not have 8-10 table loads of food for the buffets (and whatever is not used gets reheated for 3-4 days). Tikki masala chicken, chic peas, lintels, onion things, spinach, fish... all on the buffet and all very good! Everything has a slight spice to it, but nothing overwhelming. I think most of us would agree that the downtown area needs more non-chain restaurants. One of the things the weekday lunch crowd could certainly use is a decent Indian/Pakistani restaurant, especially since there are new Indian restaurants mushrooming all over the place. However, Masala Grill isn't the answer to our prayers. Ordering kebabs and the daily specials off the menu is definitely the way to go because it was a lot better than the mediocre buffet fare. My first time here, I ordered a few kebabs, lamb curry and chicken biriyani. The kebabs were good but chicken biriyani and lamb curry were average. A few weeks later, I went with friends for the lunch buffet. The pakoras were soaked in oil, the lamb curry was mostly fat, gristle and bone...hardly any meat. The naan tasted like the frozen naan you get at Indian stores like Patel's. I'm all about giving local mom and pop places a chance but this food is just not good enough to warrant walking several blocks for it. read more
