Fresh exciting flavours. The Aburi Salmon made with fresh Tasmanian Salmon is a most pleasurable experience. Masaaki Sushi, make it your destination.

Kobe Japanese Restaurant - This water was the best part of my meal.

Excuse me, Kobe, but I'm a little bit in love with you…read more I first stuck my head in here on the way home from a dentist appointment because I needed a bit of cheering up after that horror, and because I recalled seeing someone online raving about the ramen noodles being handmade, and Kobe being the only place they'd come across so far in Hobart who go to such care. Well! On walking in the door, the loveliest older pair of staff welcomed me so kindly, I almost considered asking for a hug (pls remember, dental trauma). Instead I took a seat at the table I was escorted to, and then eyeballed the menu for longer than I care to admit, waging a war within myself. I came in with the intent of eating the ramen, but all I wanted once I saw chicken katsu don was chicken katsudon. I suddenly and urgently missed the days of hanging out at Hanaichi in Brisbane with my heart friends. So I got the chicken katsudon, with hearty encouragement from the lovely older lady, because it's her favourite. IT WAS SO DELICIOUS. It's like a comfort food is back in my life and I'm so, so happy about it. Have I been back already? I sure have. The second time, I stuck to my guns and had the Kobe ramen. It was also delicious, hearty and messy (like all good ramen should be). Now all I need to do is never stop visiting. The layout is a bit strange, being in the ground floor of some kind of short-stay apartment building, with entrances to the accommodation in the middle of the restaurant (which I guess once just served as a foyer but has now been farmed out). I suppose if anything, I hope Kobe gets the chance to move locations and find somewhere they fit a bit more comfortably. But if they're comfortable here, then I'll get comfortable here, too. As long as nobody takes my katsudon away from me.

After a couple flights and an Uber into town, we were ready for our first meal in Hobart. We were…read morenear North Hobart, which has a ton of restaurants on Elizabeth Street, so we decided to try Midori Japanese Kitchen. We dropped in on a Thursday afternoon (around 1:30pm). Empty except for people that kept on coming in to get these sushi rolls from the counter. Not sure why they were so popular. All rice and not much real ingredients. There's a couple different menus. They have a ramen menu with four different bowls (oddly, all are at the same $15.80 AUD price point). The main menu is split into Japanese salad, chicken & pork, seafood, vegetarian, tempura, rice and udon noodles, set (bento boxes) and set menu options. You go up to the counter and order. There's tap water in the drinks display case (bottom row). Oddly, they don't give you any soy sauce for your rolls, nigiri or sashimi. - Sushi & sashimi set (#1) ($15.80 AUD) - assorted sushi rolls, nigiri and sashimi served with ginger and wasabi. There were two smoked salmon, two canned tuna and two chicken rolls. Smoked salmon was good; the other two were dry and bland. Desperately needed some soya sauce. Four nigiri (salmon, ebi, seaweed salad and tofu); decent. Sashimi consisted of five pieces of salmon. This was different as the salmon tasted saltier/brinier. You could taste that it was from the ocean. - Pork katsu set (#6) ($15.80 AUD) - pork katsu, seafood nuggets, garden salad and steamed rice. Seafood nuggets tasted like they were from a frozen, pre-packed box. Katsu was better but the meat was dry and needed more sauce. Garden salad was enjoyable. Merely average Japanese food. Nothing compared to what you get back in Vancouver.

This is honestly the worst ramen I have ever experienced, and I've eaten a lot of ramen…read more I would have had a more wholesome ramen experience from an instant packet, which at the very least would have provided some flavour. This meal however came out looking delicious, but was in fact a bowl of regular instant noodles swimming in a large bowl of vaguely pork-tasting dish water. I personally scoured the restaurant for salt and chilli, in the hope of being able to taste something. I failed. The pickles on top were the highlight.

READ REVIEWS BEFORE YOU EAT HERE…read more READ tripadvisor REVIEWS BEFORE YOU EAT HERE. Most of the staff seemed very nice but it was crazy expensive, very small portions and when we left I was still hungry... that has never happened to me before. The exterior needs some work, so does the timing of the food (This seems to be a theme in the reviews so it goes to show, they are not listening to the public)... bring it all out at once or we are left waiting for the last plate... these are basics of food service. The main course was the size of an appetizer. I can't believe that after 2 months I still remember this as the worst /expensive experience we had in Australia. Again, most the staff seemed very friendly but....

I finally got my opportunity a couple of weeks ago when some girls from work and I decided to catch up somewhere nice we hadn't been before... and 3J was on everyone's list! I love, love, love a place that has a "feed me" option, and 3J does that for around $65 a head. A multitude of delicious and interesting courses all served in excellent time, and catering for a vegetarian in our midst, to boot. The space itself is a bit strange, and has always been a bit strange, but I'm happy the restaurant now exists here and I look forward to another visit to hopefully try their breakfast menu next time!
