I've been wanting to try this one for months after hearing a few raves, mostly about the sauce. The sauce was definitely unique for Pizza. Basically your meat sauce, which was I have to admit, very interested and enjoyable. Overall, though, I would say this pizza was good, but not great. My boyfriend took me here over the 4th of July holiday and said it's the best pizza EVER--and it was no lie. The thick dough, sweet sauce, and decadent cheese all come together for the best flavor ever. Only those with truly good taste and refined palette can enjoy and enjoy I did. I'm on a roadtrip now and considering a 5 hour detour just for a slice (well, maybe a few slices). Mary's Pizza is what you grow up in when you live near Lisbon, Ohio. And when you grow up and move away it is the place you crave and immediately run to when you get back home for a visit. They have a few options as far as what kind of pizza you can get. Their white pizza is lovely, if you like garlic you will love it. But, my favorite is their whole tomato sauce, which tastes a lot like fresh bruschetta. They are not shy with the cheese or toppings and you can walk away with a medium pizza for $16. Where else can you do that? I am not a huge fan of their original sauce because it has a sweet taste and chunks of meat (just not my taste... others swear by it). But what really sets Mary's apart is the service. It is friendly and local. Everyone knows Keith, the guy behind the counter who runs the show, it is THAT regular. It's not really the place to go and sit down to eat, it's more for grabbing and taking home to share, but if you wanted to eat there they do provide the tables. We ordered pizza when staying at Postcard Beaver Creek because they recommended it. It did not disappoint! The sauce was very sweet and paired well with the provolone. My boyfriend had the gluten free crust and I had the thick crust. Next time we go to Postcard Cabins, we will be trying the thin crust for sure. Tucked away in what looks like used to be a garage in the small town of Lisbon, OH is Mary's Pizza. My fiancé grew up eating this pie and I've heard time upon time how good it is. You have to call ahead because it takes about 45 minutes to make, but the friendly staff will have it ready for you to pick up in a quick in and out when ready. They also have shirts you can buy with the logo on them. The pizza is definitely unique, a tick crusted Ohio Valley style (so the cheese is added after it's cooked in the oven and melts on top) with more of a pasta sauce rather than a traditional pizza sauce. Personally, I thought this sauce was one of the best sauces I have had on a pizza; it was slightly sweet and cooked with ground sausage and beef which added a depth to the flavor. Some pieces of meat were too large for my liking, but from what I've heard it's chef dependent. They also didn't skimp out on the amount of sauce. Now, if you like a traditional light tomato pizza sauce, this is probably not the pizza for you. As someone who prefers a traditional or thinner crust, this crust was much too thick for my liking. This was more of a focaccia style, but unlike Detroit style that is pan fried, this is just thick and crunchy. The flavor was okay, but was somewhat lacking. Lastly, the cheese. If you've never had Ohio Valley style pizza, it's definitely different than anything you've had before. First of all, they use provolone rather than mozzarella. Second, the cheese isn't baked on the pizza, it's added on top of the hot pizza fresh out of the oven so it melts on top. So if it doesn't appear completely melted, that's because it isn't. This makes it seem a little thicker on top, it also hardens faster. We didn't eat this totally fresh so the cheese was a little hard, but it would have been better if we ate it in the car. Overall, this was a good slice. I could only eat one because of how thick it was and hearty the sauce was, but it just wasn't my preferred slice of pizza. If you like a thick crust or the Ohio Valley style, this is the pizza for you. read more

In town for 40 year SHS reunion from A2, Michigan. Mary's pizza retains the same flavor and quality as in 1983. Difficult to find this in todays market. The sauce is just sweet enough, with generous cheese over the ordered toppings. Dough done just right. Steve continues the tradition set by his grandmother, Mary. I've only had this pizza as a take-out and given to my buddies and I all the way to Youngstown during my final year in college. We were given a variety of pizzas such as cheese, pepperoni, and their sweet sausage. The cheese and pepperoni was good and nothing to really rave about. But their sweet sausage pizza was honestly one of the best pizza I've ever eaten. I usually don't like thicker crust pizza as well but the sauce and sausage mix was something I've never had but it was amazing. If I am ever in Lisbon, I will definitely come and grab some of their pizza. read more

I grew up with this pizza and can honestly say: there's nothing like it ANYWHERE! Sauce is a meat sauce so if you don't eat meat you'll need to let them know. I heard about this place on a feature and drove out 30 min just to try it. Holy Cow! I have a new fav in pizza. However, this place was recommended to me, and I felt obligated to try to pizza the way they fix it. So I ordered the regular pizza, which came with sausage, and much to my surprise, it was absolutely delicious. I could not believe I was eating pizza with sausage! Mary's is famous in this area but I'm not from here and I don't get it. This pizza is fat thick doughy crust with super sweet red pasty sauce. The cheese becomes its own layer glob. I'm not into it but many people I know, including my husband absolutely love it. read more
