I found it very pleasant there. Also love the dining area overlooking the atrium. All spaces well designed, well kept, clean, and modern. The apartment rooms are also beautiful spaces with luxe carpets, modern kitchens, and baths, with good amount of storage. The food quality and service could be improved, but we ate at an odd time...2:30 pm on a Saturday. I can't say enough about the people running this... so many activities and the residents themselves are go-getter and so friendly. Beautiful facility ! We worked with the community relations Director and he was wonderful and helped us thru a very stressful process of convincing mom to leave her big house. He really knows how to talk to and relate to older persons, and he so committed and compassionate. He gave us incredible advice all along our journey to find a place for mom to live. He gave us incredible tips, referrals and information to help with the process. My mom chose this place out of all the ones we looked at, but due to timing issues and availability of units and some additional amenities she needed, we went with another wonderful Merrill Gardens property. Do not hesitate to make this your or your loved one's new home!

She's dealing with progressing memory issues & simply adjusting to being a widow & apartment life. She loves all the staff - from management, the medical director, front desk, dining room, concierge, facilities, & cleaning staff - they are all kind, friendly, fun & supportive - not only to her but to me also. It feels like home to me too. The staff immediately took the time to learn my mums (and my) name and get to know her so she felt welcomed, seen and supported. They go out of their way to accommodate her needs, they are immediately responsive. She has challenges that they have recently found an amazing work around for, which will give her extra support & more purpose in her day. Amazing! She's lived in 2 different apartments in the building & both feel new, clean, fresh, bright. Very comfortable. The location is fantastic - walk a block or so right into the heart of Ballard, grocery store across the street, banks & pharmacy a block away. It's perfect. As soon as I met Ian (community relations director) an Lisa (general manager) when we toured the facility, I knew we had found her next home. They are absolutely wonderful people! Zero pretense - just down to earth, fun & really good at what they do. Transitioning her into the facility was easy (mostly for me) with thanks to how simple the staff made it - a big move after living in your home 30 yrs! Thank you Merrill Gardens at Ballard - you are making this challenging time in my mothers (and my) life so much easier. I also will say that I have spoken to several other Merrill Gardens management & community relations staff at their other locations & have found every one of them to be incredibly helpful, also going out of their way to assist. We are truly appreciative - I have absolutely ZERO hesitations when recommending Merrill Gardens at Ballard.

They both state that they really enjoy the meals and the dining facilities, also the opportunities to socialize with others in a variety of dining options. I am unable to address the costs with any accuracy so I will say I only understand that fees are 'hefty'. But that includes all expenses. The family members support each them with frequent visits and supplement anything they need. At times, the staff is not 100% on the ball and require that we keep check on doctor's orders. It is important to do this since health issues are involved.  There are a variety of activities offered and many residents take advantage of the offerings and state that the choices are outstanding. These activities offer so much, friendships, socialization, enjoyment and much more. The programs are high quality and open to all. So far, the individual apartments are pretty basic. The windows are large and open onto lovely landscaping. Moving in required that each family member had to leave much behind and only bring in a few treasured items to fit into the small apartments. For our family members it is important that we 'supplement' their lives with our support. We do so with love and affection.

Every time I visit the Ida Culver house, I am just so impressed with the quality of the staff. One of the places where the staff has an opportunity to really shine is in the dining room. Every time I am there, I am just so impressed with how the staff handles their roles, how kind and engaging they are with the residents. At the end of pretty much every meal, "someone" seems to always mentions how great the staff is.

Security is solid--you check in at the front desk and get a visitor badge--and there's plenty of parking. The party was held in the game room downstairs, with a huge spread of food: chicken wings, pizza, cold cuts, veggies, chips and dips, popcorn, mozzarella sticks, desserts, cookies, plus beer and soda. A big‑screen TV made watching the game easy, and lots of residents were there with their families. Both the game room and dining area have a beautiful view of Lake Washington, which made the whole event feel even nicer.

Once we were able to get mom to give The Lakeshore a chance, she found a beautiful and diverse living community with wall-to wall art, friendly residents, professional staff, and a welcoming feel. The place is absolutely beautiful with lake views, neighboring eagles and pristine indoor and outdoor common areas. Mom marvels over the food in a dining room that resembles a high-end restaurant. The menu has an impressive variety that includes weekly specials and multi-ethnic cuisine. We are surprised at how well mom has acclimated to her new living arrangement. The maintenance folks are always friendly and willing to help with tasks that Mom needs done. The front desk staff is welcoming and attentive at all times. We appreciate how the staff knows everybody by name and converses with them in a way that shows they personally know each resident. Knowing that my mother is living amongst wonderful people, residents as well as staff, brings so much joy and comfort to our family. We are impressed with the fellow residents who are ambassadors. They check on Mom and include her in activities. They are all very welcoming to their peers, family members, and all who visit. The events and activities that are held at The Lakeshore keep folks as busy as they want to be, or they can just enjoy quiet time in the library, activity room, or areas to just sit and relax. My husband and I have already decided that we will be moving to The Lakeshore when we are ready to transition from our home.

That being said, I was not impressed with their decision to tell my mother to leave once it became clear that she was going to be difficult (and expensive) to care for. HH advertises itself as providing the whole range of life care from supported living to nursing and dementia care. I think for anyone in independent living, it is a wonderful and vibrant community. But once you need more support, you will either need to be wealthy enough to hire outside caregivers, or move to a different facility. An update: After HH decided they wanted to kick my mother out, they reported her to the state's Adult Protective Services for "self-neglect" and me for "neglect." They said that they asked her to move to another facility and we "didn't follow through." Note that: my mother chose to pay a substantial nonrefundable sum to live at HH because she understood that as a continuing care facility they would take care of her until the end of her life; we asked about temporary or permanent supported living arrangements at HH and were rebuffed because they didn't want to deal with the liability and expense of managing her; and as a result we were, in fact, in the process of finding another placement for her outside of HH at our own expense.
