The classes are very boring and repetitive (I've practiced Pilates for years, and rarely do the same thing twice with other instructors), and although there is constant correction and criticism, there is very little instruction. Finally too frustrated to continue, but she refused to refund for the last classes.

I had X rays and an MRI on my hip because of chronic pain. The orthopedic doctors I met with didn't seem to know much. They offered a cortisone injection not because I needed it, but because that's all they know how to do. Anyway, I was amazed at Karen's deep knowledge of body mechanics. She had a clear understanding of the structures involved and how they connected to other parts of my body. She understood what was happening in my body. Best of all she was able to help me reduce the pain and improve my movement and functioning overall. She worked on me directly and taught me how to work on myself. I continue to use the things she taught me on a daily basis to improve my posture and physical functioning. Plus she is a super nice and caring person. I recommend her for anyone feeling hopeless about their physical problems, or if you just want to improve how you move.

The fourth month came around and I tried to cancel because I can't currently afford it with my situation. They told me I have to cancel 30 days before the next month so I have to pay for a second month of classes that I cannot attend or they threatened to bring it to collections. This is because they've created an exploitative policy to trap people. The classes were decent, not my favorite studio but good Pilates. Just beware that this studio seems to be profit above people and that their policies do not have any flexibility. Overall, I don't think people should have to pay for classes they are not taking.

To be clear, I am open to and accepting of correction in form for safety and effectiveness however, I instead felt degraded and humiliated when I left class. While I understand the reason for the instructors concern I believe her concerns could have been handled better. I cancelled my membership as the classes that fit my schedule required me to be in the class with this instructor, 6am M, W, F. I am quite uncomfortable having this instructor. My membership fee was deducted on July 28th for the month of August and I was told it would not be refunded even though I did not attend any classes in the month of August. She then stopped responding to me. It is her right to make business policies, but very bad form to go back on a promise, especially a written one. So I would like to update this review because there have been significant changes over at…read moreBarsculpt. I was a long-term customer there, with a regular weekly schedule and LOVED the class itself and my usual instructor. The owner very recently downsized to a small studio which made for some really inconvenient changes that are really hard to ignore. The first is parking, the old location had a decent amount available, but the new space in the State Theatre building does make it challenging if you're commuting. The second is the price hike. I used to get my 5 class pass for barre only for $55, which was a steal. Totally would have been okay with a reasonable update to align with competitors but it was hiked to $100 for a 5 class pass, which is really unreasonable in my opinion. Granted this price includes reformer and barre, but for someone who doesn't do reformer classes it's definitely not worth it. The last piece is the class times. They used to have a wide variety and I always had at least 4-6 people in my 5:30p classes. The new space only has classes until 12-12:30 which is truly not helpful for people with jobs! Overall, still a huge fan of barsculpt as a class but not a fan of the new space or business practices.
