I've been on sabbatical in West Cork for several months, and have tried many pub/restaurants during my time here. The first thing to say is that pub food in this part of the country is pretty consistently amazing. Lots of delicious seafood-- dishes like mussels mariniere, seafood chowder, and of course fish and chips are standard in most places. That said, by far by favorite meals in the last two months have been at Mary Ann's. Specifically the seafood pie, which is essentially chowder with cod and salmon in a creamy sauce topped with two inches of buttery mashed potatoes, and finished off with melted grated cheddar cheese. Oh. My. God. It is heavenly. Everything else my friends and I have eaten here-- lobster, steak, mussels, pasta, salads, desserts-- has been consistently wonderful as well. The prices are reasonable. The atmosphere is very traditional Irish pub, with a low ceiling, large bar, low lighting, wooden furniture, and a tv in the corner with a rugby/soccer match on. There's a little fireplace heater by the door that adds some warmth in both senses of the word. The staff is very friendly and helpful too. I plan to drive back out there for another meal before I head back to California in two weeks (it's an hour drive from where I'm staying, if that tells you how much I love it.) The pub itself is located along a hilly street in a quaint village called Castletownsend. Definitely worth a visit if you're anywhere in West Cork! And order the seafood pie! read more
