Probably worst of all were the constant sinus infections, 5-8 infections each year. I was always on antibiotics--the last infection took me through four different antibiotics and none would help. I was referred to Dr. Knapp's office a couple months ago, and he went through my CT scans, did an exam, and determined the root cause of my problems: small cavities, infected tissue that no medication would help, deviated septum, and just very small airways. He gave me lots of options, and also mentioned surgery. I have heard how awful sinus surgery is, but he told me that while he can't guarantee it to cure 100% of my ailments, that it would make my life significantly better. So, I went in a month ago and had turbinate reduction (he took an inch off from one cavity!), removal of the infected tissue and opening of my passageways, as well as a septoplasty. A month after the surgery now, I feel like my entire life has changed. I haven't coughed once! I used to stay up all night coughing, every night. The recovery has had some pretty disgusting parts, but I can't tell you how amazing it is to be able to breath. I only had dissolvable packing, which I heard is the worst part of the recovery, and no bruising at all. He's a miracle worker, and his staff is fantastic: his nurse was always available to me, (he even called me twice on the phone, which I have never heard of a doctor doing before), and his billing staff worked diligently to get my stubborn insurance to cover the cost. Another reassuring point is that I see an amazing doctor for my asthma and allergy issues, and he and Dr. Knapp told me the same things about treatment, ailments, recovery, without ever even talking to each other. I was very impressed that these doctors were on the same page. :) He's amazing!

This was no easy task with the ear in question as the medicine I had been using had dried and formed a perfect seal over the eardrum. He ended up soaking it with hydrogen peroxide to loosen things up. It took digging and suction to remove! I can hear again! I can not say enough great things about this guy. I have been feeling dizzy on and off for several years and especially recently. My PCP is retiring this month, already closed her office. I needed some female surgery done - which I have now accomplished, and I am trying to figure out what to do about my dizzy-ness, my sinus (one of which was rebuilt in Kenya by a brilliant reconstructive surgeon after an accident) and the ONLY thing the receptionist would say is, "You have to have a referral. Dr. Hammill is a specialist too, I see in your MyChart you have other referrals, so you have to have a referral!" No one can "self-refer" anymore. Argh. Dr. Hamill might be brilliant, but I won't know.

I went to Dr. Song for dizziness and vertigo last summer. After waiting almost 3 weeks to see her, I was a little thrown off when she spent 5 minutes with me by using a flashlight to look at my eyes. She asked me a couple of questions then told me the reason for my dizziness and vertigo was from my sodium intake. What? I was immediately pissed off and upset, and I let Dr. Song know. She didn't ask me anything about what I eat. If she had, she'd know that I rarely eat processed foods, and I actually look at labels of food almost obsessively. She kept saying, "I can't imagine what you're going through". She referred me to get an MRI, "just in case", but told me to lower my sodium. 10 minutes later, I was on my way out of an appointment I had waited 3 weeks for. I wanted an answer to why I was dizzy and had vertigo. I am otherwise healthy, so assumed my symptoms were due to an inner ear issue. I went to the MRI, but didn't expect what was about to come. They told me I would hear from Dr. Song in a week, unless they had found something. Dr. Song called me the next morning. She said, "yah, um, you have a brain tumor". WTF? And again, "I can't imagine what you're going through" with the same sincerity as before. None. I'll never forget that conversation as long as I live. Nobody wants that call, and I won't bore you with the details other than to say that I am recovering from the serious and painful ordeal of brain surgery, but Dr. Song's bedside manner was absolutely awful at the worst time in my life. I would dissuade anyone from seeing her. I had actually written a letter to the medical director of the clinic conveying my experience, but threw it away when I found out about my brain tumor. I had other things to worry about.

During my visits, I felt there was more focus on discussing hearing aids than on identifying and addressing the underlying cause of my symptoms. Additionally, I was informed that I would be referred to a balance specialist, but that referral never appeared to be completed. Fast forward approximately six months, and my symptoms have continued to worsen. The pressure in my ears has become increasingly painful and is significantly impacting my quality of life. My primary care physician recently encouraged me to schedule a follow-up appointment as soon as possible, as these ongoing medical issues could be contributing to other health concerns. When I contacted ENT Associates to explain the severity of my symptoms and request an appointment, my call was disconnected twice. While I understand technical issues can happen, the overall experience was frustrating. After finally reaching someone, I was informed that the earliest available appointment was nearly two months away despite the worsening nature of my condition. I recognize that specialist offices often have busy schedules, but I was disappointed by the lack of follow-through regarding the referral, the difficulty obtaining timely care, and what felt like limited attention to identifying the root cause of my symptoms. He fully explained in layman's terms the issues causing and surrounding the bleed. I felt very comfortable knowing my dad was in such good care.
