Made an account just for this. Reviews made me excited to try this place after failing to find stylists in my area for men's wavy long hair (Shoulder to mid back long.) But most of those glowing reviews are pre-covid. I don't know if a lot of their stylists left but there's a notable lack of reviews post-covid. They're kind and the space feels lux and quiet. Problem is communication, went multiple times feeling very whelmed and changed stylist every time. After my third time I think I'm done, I've shown pictures and discussed with them what I wanted but they can never seem to get it right. Instead they default to a generic taper short off the sides and medium top cut, but then why tell me you can do the cut or even have experience with it? Is it my head shape? Face? Am I too ugly? Communicate that to me before you decide to just ignore the conversation we had and just free style. It's frustrating because I am growing out my hair for this cut and they do what they want. I don't want to be rude and stop you mid cut but then why am I paying so much just to be left unsatisfied? Most of the men leaving the place have the same exact cut. Anything longer than a short to medium cut is a no go, those cuts look clean and nice. Kept going in with shoulder length wavy hair just to get butchered every time. read more

Just not for me. I have long silky hair (Asian hair) and at the time I didn't think that mattered but they're just not accustomed to that type of hair, much less hair styles relevant to the Asian community. It was also incredibly expensive. I fell for the allure of a high end service and in the end, it wasn't a good fit. Martial is hands-down the best hair stylist I've ever had. I made the mistake of going to a barber to get a trim at the back and sides. My previous haircut by Losi several months prior was excellent and I was still happy with how it looked at the top and front but didn't want to fork out $300+ for just a trim. Well, the barber totally botched it up, taking too much off, making the top look completely disconnected and leaving texture holes (basically bald spots) at the back. Enter Martial Vivot. The man talked to me for a few minutes about my hair, getting to know more about it (how often do I wash it, do I use a conditioner, etc., etc.). He explained exactly where the issues were and how he will correct them, all the while being extremely courteous and polite. He even handed me my drink (I asked for a sparkling water) and put it back on the counter top despite it being right in front of me. And then he went to work. Watching him reminded me of a surgeon performing an operation, so incredibly precise he was and his face showed nothing but laser-sharp focus (he doesn't talk much during the cut). And slowly but surely, with every stroke of the comb and every cut of the scissors, my hair started to look better and better until all the damage done by the barber was undone and my hair looked fantastic again. Yes, the price may seem exorbitant (because it is), but in this case, it's worth every penny. read more

LET ME START BY SAYING NEVER GET A HAIRCUT BEFORE AN IMPORTANT DAY!!! One of the worst experiences i have ever had at a hairdressers! I am writing this review as a warning to other people not to part with their hard earned cash at this salon. This is the worst haircut i have ever had. I was in tears after i left the salon, The entire experience from start to finish was awful. I visited this salon several weeks ago.I never felt welcomed by the salon staff. I got the vibes that i was disturbing them. They were all together talking to each other and on their phones. I wasn't welcomed to the salon. I was only offered herbal tea or water when all i wanted was a coffee, The seats i waited in for over twenty minutes were so uncomfortable. The way in which the salon is decorated is tacky to say the least. My hairdresser was incredibly rude to me. He never listened to me and just did exactly what he wanted.And cut far to much off and left scissor marks and made it uneven.He never matched my color and i am now several shades darker- which is not what i asked for. I would like to know what the salon manager thinks of all these reviews because by the looks of things i am not the only one who will NOT be going back. The staff are rude, unapproachable, and would rather talk to each other than communicate with their clients. The standard of the hair stylists is not good enough in this salon. The staff overcharged my credit card and when I called to inquire about the charge he called me a liar and said good luck. This was my first time getting my haircut at Martial Vivot. I booked my appointment online at the downtown location. My expectations were exceeded on all fronts. The receptionist was accommodating, she hung up my coat and offered me a beverage. The waiting area was comfortable although I didn't wait very long. Clark cut my hair. He saw my vision right from the start and made me comfortable. He asked all the right questions and the conversation was easy. Damian's shampoo, rinse, & hot towel hit the spot. Daniel and Christine helped defining my hair last night, it took more than 2 hrs. Daniel is just a born hair stylist, totally patient, yet never lacking precision even for a moment. This is a review for the downtown location. I am a happy returning customer to this location. Scottie is a master in this art and knows how to cut your hair and take care of yourself. He studies the hair, how it grows, what happened since the last time. He asks also what you do for job, your hobbies, any plans you may have. There a reason for this: the cut is custom made. My haircut is unique and it reflects my personality. I have never experienced such a thing in other salon in the city. Being from Italy means also going to the barber once in while: I asked Scottie to shave my beard with the Acqua di Parma shave. I have been to what seems like thousands of hairstylists in the city. But since discovering Martial Vivot - I need not look any further. I have been going to Martial Vivot for a couple years now and the salon continues to surpass my expectations. The salon is beautiful inside and really sets the mood for a great experience and the perfect cut. The interior is a designed with a tasteful mixture of steel, wood and brick. When you walk in, a bar is set up against the exposed brick backdrop so you can relax and help yourself to a drink. The ladies that work at the front desk are always so accommodating and friendly. The salon is located next to MoMA, Manolo Blahnik, Fifth Ave stores so you're in the heart of it all. Victor Szeto is my stylist and he is, hands-down, the best. He has worked with my hair when it was long (down to shoulders) to very short (almost shaved) and everything in between. He listens to your ideas and is careful and consistent. He has cut my hair in preparation for big, important presentations, to my special bday celebrations. The clientele is comprised of execs, Ford models, other fashionistos. Just a truly urban metro place. I'm not surprised that this place is consistently voted as the best by New York Magazine and various other publications. Let me start off by saying this has been the best haircut I've ever gotten by a factor of 10. I came here with a purpose to correct specific things I didn't like with my style. I made the appointment not knowing who to pick. Too many options!! However, I felt Losi was the right one. When I arrived, she greeted me, looked at my hair and asked, "You're growing it right?!" I nodded in affirmation. She then began her magic and pointed out the exact issues I was having. Her recommendations and styling pointers were spot on. It was truly a bespoke experience and a pleasure to watch a master. Most artisans project what they know, use standard formulas and patterns to everything. Whereas with Losi, my hair was the center and she was there to guide it and bring out it's essence. Post-cut When I wake up in the morning, my hair is perfect, after a workout, perfect. After a run? perfect. During the day, perfect! It doesn't matter the situation, my hair is awesome!! I used to rely heavily on product to keep things normal. Now a little goes a long way. Being a salon owner myself, I want to be able to sit back and relax and not have to micro analyse my haircut. I visited Martial Vivot recently during a 2-week business trip to New York City. For those of you that don't know me, i am a creature of habit. And one of my habits is that I get a haircut and shave every week back home in San Diego. Now, what makes this habitual practice somewhat odd to most people, is that I have less facial hair than most kids studying the Haftarah in preparation for their bar mitzvahs. In other words, I have the facial hair of a 13 year old boy; meaning, I really only have to shave once every 8 days. And when I say "shave", I mean rid myself of the tiny yet numerous hairs that occupy my neck like protestors camping out in opposition to bailouts of big banks and the criminalization of medicinal marijuana (see what I did there, I made my facial hair relevant to social issues facing this country today). So in anticipation of my travels to NY (or the Big Apple as I like to call it), I asked the concierge at the London who they suggest for shaves and haircuts...and voila, I have an appointment at Martial Vivot. When you first walk into MV, it is rather unassuming. You are greeted by a friendly girl at the front desk who offers to take your coat (or in my case, a sweatshirt that further confirms why people are so hard pressed to believe I am 32) and get you coffee. There are also bottles of what I assume to be a fancy array of liquors. As someone who doesnt partake in drinking strong liquors often, this was neither a plus nor a negative for me. Then I am brought to the back of the shop by the woman who is going to cut my hair (or in my case, give me a fade/blend). The haircut/fade was pretty good, she was extremely nice and was so drop dead gorgeous that I made it clear to her that if I was biologically able, I would carry her child. During the haircut, I was then whisked away by another fantastically attractive woman who washed and shampoo'd my head. Now, as a man with a shaved head, this is very unnecessary. But as a man with a shaved head who has a better chance of being eaten by a grizzly bear while sitting on a cross-country flight with Wade Boggs (Google Wade Boggs and flight), I wasnt about to turn down this opportunity - and it was well worth it. Now on to the shave. In the words of Billy Crystal aka Fernando Llamas...it was maaaaaarvelous! Martial is like a French ninja. The shave was amazing, the lotions he used on my face smelled fantastic and by the end of it, my face was smoother than Billy Dee Williams napping on a silk rug covered by a cashmere blanket. Yes, it was pricey, but between beautiful women touching my head and acting as if my horrible conversation skills were actually enthralling and the shave from Heaven.....it was completely worth it! read more

Could not recommend Katy and Martial Vivot more highly. I've been cutting my hair with Katy now for a couple years and have left with an impeccable haircut every time, something I can only say about 2-3 haircuts prior. The attention to detail and precision she cuts with is worlds away from any other barber I've cut my hair with, and she always goes the extra mile making my extremely thick hair miraculously easy-to-manage. Because Katy takes so much care, it never takes me more than half a minute to deal with my hair in the morning and I receive compliments several times a week. It doesn't hurt that Katy also makes me feel more comfortable than I ever have at a salon; our conversations are engaging, wide-ranging, and never forced.
