Brand new wine shop near Mother Earth on RT 9 in Poughkeepsie. Very clean, bright space and nicely organized. Good selection of both basic wines and spirits as well as some higher quality and nicely curated wines, including organic and biodynamic bottles. The owner is very friendly and super knowledgeable. And I love that she is planning some great events and tasting for the future, including a Bastille Day tasting! Will definitely be back! read more

It's getting tougher and tougher to buy wine in the Hudson Valley for me. That's certainly not for a lack of wine - it's because there's a growing number of wine and liquor stores I wish to patronize. Today I added Marta's to that list. The store is bright and well laid out, with a variety of domestic and imported wines including several from the Hudson Valley. Blends are a growing interest too, and they have those as well. There's more focus on wine than liquor and liqueur here, but what they've got, I really like especially their bourbon selection. I'll have to watch for their tastings, because that tasting room in the back looks inviting too. For me, Marta's fills a niche in my wine shopping itinerary. read more

What a great shop! I have passed by many times since moving to the area over the summer but was shopping at my wine and spirits out of convenience. I stopped in here recently to pick up some bottles of wine to bring to a friend's house and Becky assisted me in picking out some wines. She was friendly and helpful. There is not a huge selection in the store but I appreciate the fact that they are helpful and knowledgeable and everything seems to be more thoughtfully curated. There were plenty of bottles under $15 for me to choose from, so it's a great way to find something that I like without committing to a more expensive bottle. Of the two bottles I bought, one was nine dollars and the other was $12 or $13 so definitely they are in the realm of affordability and the $9 bottle that I picked up was quite enjoyable. I will definitely shop here to support a local business. I have to pick up more wine for a dinner next week so I'm looking forward to their expertise again. read more

I'm somewhat tired of going into wine/liquor stores where the younger help give me advice like "go for the Tito's vodka...you'll never get a hangover." Marta's is certainly not that kind of place. It's a nice, bright and thoughtfully laid out store with friendly and very knowledgeable staff members. read more

Sometimes I'm asked if I need help, usually I'm not. Often, there's a group of people behind the checkout socializing, and I can't tell if they're employees or delivery people or vendors. The cashiers are usually friendly, but it would be nice if they provided a receipt every time without asking. Just because I can't return something doesn't mean I'm not entitled to a copy of the receipt. I went in today looking for a specific bourbon for my husband for Valentine's Day. Usually when I can't find something in the aisle, I know it's behind the counter. I showed the cashier a screenshot of the store's website, and he jokingly said "well at that price, it should be in the aisle on the right side of the aisle, and if it's not, then it's on the left." I went back to the aisle. A different version of it was there, the version I was looking for was not. I walked back to the register, saw what I was looking for right behind the first cashier. Another cashier waved me over. I jokingly said that I politely disagreed with the first cashier that what I was looking for was in the aisle, and she said well, no actually, he's not wrong, the bigger bottles are in the aisle, and we have smaller bottles back here and she showed me a different (incorrect version), to which I responded for her to just please look behind him, the one that I'm looking for, is literally right there. She turns. Oh hey, I was right. No acknowledgment that I was right. So I guess next time I want a $72 bottle of bourbon, I'll drive down to Viscount or Arlington Wine & liquor. The reward program here is a joke; I spend several hundred dollars a year and I'm lucky to get a dollar or two off every so often. If the employees are too busy socializing and don't even know what they stock, I'll just spend my money elsewhere.

Predominately budget brands, magnums, and California wines make up the majority of the wine. Wines from Oregon Argentina France Spain Italy and Portugal are represented but on a smaller scale. I was very happy to see a good Rosé selection, even though it's winter. Extensive liquor selection as well and range from low to high end brands. They even have gift items. Prices are reasonable and they have some wines I haven't seen locally before - which is a plus for me. Very friendly staff and manager. They have a free membership program. Discounts available if you buy a case but also if you buy three bottles of one wine varietal which is a real plus! They have many tastings Thurs- Sunday and if you buy only one bottle of what is being tasted you also get the three bottle discount price! Happy to have them so close by. I'll be a regular customer.

What I am saying is that Joe the owner knows his stuff and his wine. I have trusted his recommendations and have never been let down. Whenever you go to buy a bottle of wine you can find liquid to drink for $5 bucks and WINE for $75.00. But at The Wine Store you can ask about a price range and a wine style or type without feeling that you are going to get what they are trying to sell. He honestly has paired my tastes and budget and that is why I keep going back. I've discovered many new wine at his recommendation and he continues to amaze me. I also like to test him. I particularly enjoyed the Vassar noodle bowl, which featured chewy noodles in a coconut milk curry sauce (allegedly Malaysian, more Malaysian "inspired") with BBQ pulled pork on top!! I would never have thought to combine these two ingredients, but they work beautifully together. It's a very warm and comforting dish, and the mint, cilantro, and radish garnish helps provide a bit of contrast. I liked the sour cream drizzle on top, too. I feel like this dish could really be fantastic if they adjusted the thickness and amount of curry sauce (the noodles are swimming in it like a soup) and provided more herbs and radishes on top. It could also benefit from a crispy topping to provide textural contrast. I've had other things from here that I've liked, but that weren't anything special. Like the Malaysian curry, their chicken tikka masala sauce also has a very runny texture, instead of the thicker richer sauces I've had elsewhere. And their bao buns are honestly not worth buying, since they have no hoisin sauce or creamy aioli/slaw element that binds together the rather dry meat, pickle slices, and scallions in each bun. They seem to exclusively be a grab and go kind of place, which makes sense to me as it's in a college town. Inside it's small and rather bleak, without any kind of decoration and not much seating. They take a pretty long time to prepare orders too, so plan ahead in case you're in a hurry.

They had unfortunately run out of chicken parmesan, but instead of simply saying it wasn't available, they made it from scratch just for my husband. Austin overheard us and, without us even asking, brought over a full bowl of the sauce so we could dip our pizza crust in it. That level of attention and care is something you rarely see. I ordered the New York style pizza and it was absolutely delicious. They use sourdough and King Arthur's flour, and you can truly taste the difference. The flavor and texture were outstanding. When we finished, they asked if we wanted dessert. We were hesitant because we were already so full, but Austin encouraged us to try their vanilla cheesecake and we are so glad he did. It was honestly some of the best cheesecake we have ever had. Between the phenomenal food, the thoughtful service, and the warm and welcoming atmosphere, this place completely exceeded our expectations. Experiences like this are rare and truly special.
