We ended up leaving after 2 months of our baby being born and went to another truly concierge-style pediatrician. The issues we had here was that 90% of our encounters were with a Nurse Practioner. Maybe I just got unlucky and never had an md available. The final straw was probably when my baby had his 2 month vaccine, ran a fever the same night, and the NP picked up the after hours call. She made us really nervous that something was extremely wrong even though it was just the vaccine. I mean after hours is for emergency. What if it was something worse- couldn't a doctor at least be on call? They also bill you for everything. I mean everything. Just sending an email with a photo of my baby's red bump, and then they ask to jump on a call for a few minutes just to tell me it's baby acne and then they bill $300-$400. Why not just respond via email. The same thing with asking basic questions like he's spitting up, constipated. Need to jump on a call and then get billed $300-$400. Money is not an issue for us but overtime it just seemed so ridiculous and prevented me from even wanting to email or call in. They also seem to love probiotics here. My baby had dry skin and the nurse told us to use probiotics to resolve it? He's spitting up, she told us to use probiotics. He's constipated. The solution was to use probiotics. My baby also developed a flat head. They sent us to physical therapy and to get advised for a helmet right away. At my new practice, the MD wanted to take a look at him first and then sent a referral to UCSF to get consultation with their cranio team. Anyway. I just felt like it's really cookie cutter here. Didn't feel like they cared about my baby at all. It's more like they provide good service. Yes someone will always respond to your email right away and answer your call. But just expect an NP or to be billed for every conversation you have with them.

They have always been caring and nurturing with both of my kids. When my daughter was diagnosed with kawasaki's disease, they went over and beyond my expectations, really being an authority in the hospital on her care and making sure her follow ups after her treatment were scheduled. Typically you make an appointment 1 month after birth, but we didn't know how long we'd have to stay out of state while the paperwork was finalized. Dr Shibata offered a free phone consult where she and I worked out a plan. She was encouraging and patient with my many questions and when paperwork was finally signed she was warm and congratulatory. We've only been to see her twice (1 month and 2 month check ups) but we've never waited long and she is amazing about answering ALL of our many questions and letting us know what milestones we should be looking for. I feel like she really listens and makes sure you get all your questions out and answered, which can be hard to find in a busy doctor. Because of the adoption we had a ton of medical records from our baby's birth parents and I was shocked and impressed that between visits she took the time to read through the records and call out some things the next time we saw her. She was confirmed to be negative for strep but when I asked if this may be a flu, she said no antibiotics needed as this is a virus. Two days later, my youngest got the same symptoms and so did their cousins( we all were on a family gathering prior to my daughter getting sick). BUT! Cousins were tested for a flu (which we were not offered, despite my specific question about it), in another clinic and then were prescribed Tamiflu. Cousins now are feeling so much better. When I called the clinic, the rep said I need to go buy a test from a pharmacy, check if we also have a flu and if confirmed to make another appointment to be able to get the medication. Really?! I will have to buy a test now , pay for previous appt (10 min), pay for another appointment and then pay for meds when it could have been avoided, had the doctor spend more than 7-10 min. It's sad watching your kiddo being sick for soon to be a week and to have to tell them to tough it up when there is always a better option.

The doctors seemed more concerned with being right than truly understanding our concerns and speaking to us as new parents with empathy. They were cold and never seemed to remember our child or discussions in our previous visits. When our child was born, one doctor told us it was unsafe to take them outside for a walk for the first 3 weeks because they could get germs from others. Not to mention they charge for providing immunization records for preschool/school, releasing medical records to you ($25), if you forget your vaccine record. I never got the sense they care about their patients. It's night and day with our new pediatrician, who is warm and goes above and beyond for our child. This is your warning - choose a different practice!
