Finding an entrance to the mall is a challenge for the neophyte. But the mall is home to Mayhem Amusements Arcade which has some solid pinball machines. The Polish store was rad, and I wish I had more time to shop for pierogi paraphernalia, but so it goes. I braved one of the bathrooms off of the abandoned food court. There is something kind of beautiful about these decaying palaces of commerce in this era of late stage capitalism. I can't quite put my finger on it. For someone who grew up going to shopping malls in the 1980s it's kind of like walking through a Bruce Springstein song. It is hard to comprehend the juxtaposition of decay and scrappy mom-and-pop stores with the few remaining national and international retailers who maintain slick storefronts in the building despite all odds. Go for the pinball. Stay for the weirdness. Eat elsewhere. And be careful of the potholes. I do hope Wyoming Valley mall is able to pull itself out of its death spiral. Little is sadder to a kid from the 80s than a dead mall. But of course we also know that nothing lives forever. For that matter, who wants to live forever?

The former Bon-Ton and Sears remain vacant, with Macy's also leaving in early 2025. Two major power outages also greatly affected the mall in 2025. What's left? The former Sears wing is largely vacant except for the H&M with the Macy's wing being not far behind. Both wings were cold during my visit and I'm not sure how much heat is being supplied. The JCPenney wing remains almost fully occupied with stores including American Eagle, Bath & Body Works, Maurices, and Shoe Dept. Encore among others. Food wise, Cinnabon keeps center court busy, with Auntie Anne's and Dino's remaining, but the food court is totally empty. One of the major problems is the clear lack of ownership investing in the mall. Kohan, followed by current owner's 4th Dimension Properties have not fixed the ring roads. Buckets can be found collecting water at center court and several other places in the mall, with the center court leaks being a problem for several years. The situation here will not get better. At one point not that long ago, this was the best mall in Northeast Pennsylvania. Now it's hard to justify coming here, except for the external facing Royal House Buffet. There's no word if MotorWorld will continue its project to move car dealerships here, but anything at this point would be an improvement.

The items in this store are severely discounted because they either have stains, rips, are missing a strap or a button, were the display or something about the item made it unsellable in the actual store. The first time I visited this store was in September of 2019 around noon. I just waltzed in no line and came out with five bags full of gowns, shoes, bags, and tops. It was an incredible experience and I remember telling all my friends about it. I couldn't believe all the designer goodies i was able to find at such good prices. Fast forward to October 27, 2020. I live about two hours away so I woke up really early because I originally thought the store opened at 9am. Arriving at around 9:45 am i was surprised to see a long line of people waiting at the door. I come to find out that the store opens at 10am and there is a lottery system to get in. You get a piece of paper handed to you with a number on it and when you get called you're then allowed to come in. While conversing with the people in line I realized that the majority of them were resellers from all over the tri state area. They all seemed to know each other and come to this store on a regular basis. Unfortunately unless you are one of the first five people getting into the store then you are left with the scraps. I waited an entire hour after the store opened to get inside and that was only because some of the resellers who weren't the first five to get in gave me their number and left. Resellers were walking out with bags of designer stuff leaving regular people like me to get nothing. I understand reselling is a business but it's just so tacky seeing grown men buying a $600 ysl bag just to resell it on eBay. I couldn't believe that people were driving 3hrs from Maryland or north jersey just for the opportunity to get a designer bag at a massive discount. The merchandise in the store was scarce. All the big designers are gone after the first 10 minutes the store opens. The pricing isn't even at a significant discount. If you want to buy a new ysl bag for $600, you can do to your local t j maxx or Nordstrom rack. All in all the experience was very disappointing. Resellers once again ruin what could have been a really good discount shopping experience. I would rather pay double the price just so I wouldn't have to be exposed to these scavengers. Unless you live relatively close to the store then it's a waste of a trip. The merchandise and experience was better last year. I had a nice conversation with the manager asking her if the lottery system was because of COVID but she said it's the only fair way to give everyone a chance into the store. She was a delight and I don't understand the hate directed towards her in the google reviews. One last piece to be aware of, these resellers bring all their friends and family to the store giving them a greater chance of being one of the first ones in the store. There's also some resellers who will pay off the people who go into the store first to get their merchandise from them.

Doesn't matter if they are newer design stores or the older stores that have downsized in the space they had. I came in here in hope to find a multiplug for my electronics. Where I was staying didn't have the best outlets or many for that matter. I wanted to get one that had USB and USB-C capabilities. I came in and looked all over the store and was about to give up. I even looked along the checkout line and couldn't find it. I was about to give up when I happened to ask a staff member whereabouts in the store I might find it. She clued me into the markings on the tags that tell them where items might be. She found an item similar to what I was looking for and pointed me in several different directions as to where it might be. I thought I was about to go on a wild goose chase as a few of the areas she directed me to were areas I had already looked in. But I have to give it to her, she was right on with her areas. I did end up finding exactly what I was looking for and was grateful for the help. I did a bit more browsing, picked up a few more items and was on my way to pay. This took quite some time. As with any store like this, they had too few cashiers. Waiting in the line was like having your personal space invaded. I would take one step to keep with the flow of the line and the person behind me would take two.

Most times, it's not that great. Here, I think that contributed to the lack of items on the store floor. I looked for what I thought my Dad was talking about, only to not find it. Building was previously occupied by several businesses with the last being a ShopRite, and the half Ollie's does not use remains vacant. The condition of the parking lot is a mess with holes everywhere, especially in front of the store which is basically just gravel. Ollie's owns this property, so you'd think they would invest in fixing it. This location is large with a good all-around selection of the usual Ollie's merchandise you'd expect, which can be everything from Books to Toys to Soap to Small Appliances. As with every Ollie's, if you decide to buy any Food items, check the expiration dates. Where the problems are most noticeable, is this store has received Ollie's latest renovation, which doesn't mean much until you get to the checkout area. This stores checkout area is poorly configured because it splits the electronics section in half. You have to go into the checkout line to see half the section, which at this store is a problem. This Ollie's is so chronically understaffed there are almost constant lines, and a 10-minute wait to checkout might be fast. The exit doors are in the middle of the checkout area, so to leave, you essentially have to walk back through most of the checkout area. The step backwards this store has taken is a major problem, and at this point I'd rather visit the locations at the Church Hill Mall in Hazleton or the Keyser Oak Shopping Center in Scranton.
