This review is more for Yelp than for Leesburg Family Dentistry. I've submitted two reviews for…read morethis office, all five stars, and I used to be able to see other good reviews, but, only one, very negative review shows now because it is recommended and the rest of ours are not. Let me restate some of my previous reviews - I have been a patient of the original dentist, Dr. Nelson for over 23 years and followed him when he moved to the current location. I have been a patient of Dr. Garcia for a little over a year and I am very pleased. He has helped me with an awful fear I developed of having dental work done. He's done two crowns and a root canal for me - so I know of what I speak. So, back to Yelp.... The negative review gives this practice a undeserved 1 star rating, because if a human read the review, rather than it being rated by an algorithm, it is very apparent that the reviewer was upset that the previous dentist left abruptly and didn't prepare the staff or the patients for the change in a timely manner. She rated the dentist and the office during their first difficult week, before the staff were even used to Dr. Garcia's name yet. So, I've been told that it is a computer algorithm that recommends ratings by several factors -it does not like one star or five star ratings, it does not recommend reviewers unless they have many reviews, especially reviews of varied stars, or if they are popular, etc. Yelp prides themselves on the fact that there is no human involved in the process to keep the system as unbiased as possible - but I say that there are times a rating must be read by a human, too. This is a glaring example of that. To think that someone needing a dentist in hurry, like I did when I broke my tooth, finding this rating and choosing another dentist based on one reviewers inconsiderate review. Dr. Garcia got me right in, he was able to take care of everything in his office, a one stop shop which is a far cry from what I experienced before. So, for the record, I give Dr. Garcia and his staff a 5 star rating, and Yelp a three star rating which will give Dr. Garcia a 4 - to please an algorithm so that by some chance this review will be recommended and help counter one woman's unfair review. What a mouthful...

We scheduled the filling but had to reschedule. Today I walked in and Dr. Nelson is GONE. He sold the practice. Apparently the staff didn't even know it until 2 weeks ago. It's a new doc... and here's the scoop: His name is Dr. Garcia... his staff didn't even know his first name, so good luck doing a search to find out anything about his background. He makes bad jokes in an effort build rapport. I laughed to make him feel better, but did not think he was funny. He is apparently very experienced in his country (Columbia), in both general dentistry and root canals. He moved here (US) recently and took a General Dentistry court (I gather that is required which makes sense), and I think he said he was working with another practice doing implants. He offered no names, nothing I could research (then again I was sitting in the chair, not like I had the opportunity to research him well from there). First he examined my Xrays and my mouth. He disagreed with the findings and recommendation of Dr Nelson. (Hmm) Plus, while he was doing this, with instruments in my mouth, head turned to the computer screen to see the Xrays, I was rather put off that he didn't move the instruments from my mouth. Twice I had to pull his hand out of my mouth. The first time to explain what he couldn't figure out (I don't have 12 yr molars), and the second time so I could swallow. (Umm, hello? Patient here!) I thought "well, I am here" and decided to move forward with the fillings that both doctors agreed were necessary. I let him numb me. He had that needle in my mouth FOREVER to numb me! The assistant and he explained that is important - prevents blood pressure from spiking, helps it numb more thoroughly, etc. But no other dentist has ever done that and the result is the saliva in my mouth was pooling in the back of my mouth and I thought I was going to choke because I couldn't swallow. I nearly had a panic attack. But I was determined to get my dental work done. Let's try again... more numbing - other area. This time I did not feel the needle touch my gum and wondered if it did because I felt the liquid from the needle run down my gum and into the back of my mouth. Not only did it taste terrible but it nearly made me choke. I finally get to sit up, rinse my mouth. I am really nervous, and the waiting is making it worse. Doc is waiting for me to be completely numb. Well, it worked. The back of my throat was numb (as well as gums and tongue). You know how your tongue feels (big and uncontrollable) when it is numb? Well, imagine that being the back of your throat. I was sure if I laid back down I would choke for sure. This idea was making me very nervous and I decided to leave at this point. I will give him this... Dr Garcia did NOT get upset with me. I think he wanted me to leave. I wondered if he felt like he should be doing the work. At one point, I showed him the palms of my hands saying "See how blotchy my hands are? That's because of nerves." When I said that I looked at his hands... they were blotchy too. That is when I knew I should leave. All this being said, the staff is still AMAZING. I just don't think I will be going back. I canceled my daughter's appt that is scheduled for tomorrow.

I have mixed feelings about Cedar Creek. Overall, I would recommend paying them a visit to see how…read moreyou feel about your own experience. I do appreciate that when I expressed my preferences on the types of cleaning tools to be used, i.e. not the ones that vibrate loudly in your skull, and they were open to accommodating manual tools. With that said however, they didn't clean my teeth much at all during my appointment. Truly just a brush and floss, and while I do enjoy the idea that my teeth are that clean, I'm sure there must have been some plaque to tackle. During my first appointment, I agreed to work with them on a teeth splint, which is similar to an Invisalign retainer, but formed more thick with the mission to relax your jaw muscles overall. This has been a lengthy process, but there is only my jaw to blame for that. I do wish the appointments were more concise because they often run over time, time that I have requested off of work and need to stick to. I think this will improve over time, since this is a new process on their end. But with that said, allot an extra 30 minutes for these appointments. Overall, I can't say for certain whether this has improved my headaches, but I am pleased with the consistent data results that conclude the muscles are indeed relaxing. With all of these positives, there are only a few negatives, but they are impactful to my experience so I will note them: When I first set an appointment for Cedar Creek Dental I noted on their website that they did not accept my insurance. I called to verify, and the first person I spoke to confirmed this was the case and estimated the appointment cost for me. When I arrived for my appointment however, Marianne said this was not the case and that the insurance would be accepted. As expected, once my insurance received the appointment they did not cover any of it. As I said, I expected this, but was disappointed about the misinformation given to me. My second critique is in regards to the unnecessary religious paraphernalia placed around their waiting room. Marianne took it upon herself, with Dr.Alexis' permission, to place little jesus figurines around the waiting room. Religion has no place in a medical facility. Symbolic figures don't mean the same to everyone, they can remind some people of previous harm, pain, and trauma. It is severely unprofessional to have these placed around a space that should be open and accepting to all. Especially considering the current political climate that uses these figures as an excuse to harm and exclude POC, women, and the LGBTQIA+ community. I brought this up to them but as expected, they took their own side, not even for a moment considering other feelings and opinions. That is always how it goes in these situations, of course, I sincerely was not expecting any consideration from them. In fact, Marianne said,"I've only received positive feedback about them", without considering that other people are too uncomfortable to bring it up, knowing they will be dismissed as per my example. Now you have received negative feedback, and you are choosing to ignore it. This nonaction reflects poorly on Cedar Creek Dental. Medical facilities have a responsibility to express consideration for everyone from every background. Otherwise, it proves that their work is affected by their biases, which is dangerous to people who disagree with them or minority groups ousted by their religion, in any capacity. That consideration should extend from the front desk, to the dental chair, which is not the case here, unfortunately.

I had stopped taking her to the dentist because it became nearly impossible for her to follow directions or tolerate even basic procedures. I was able to get a same-day emergency appointment, and Dr. Julie Coe and her team were incredible from start to finish. They were patient, gentle, and extremely skilled--able to take X-rays, do a cleaning, and eventually complete a deep cleaning. One of the biggest advantages of Dental Innovations of Virginia is that they truly meet patients where they are. They offer home visits, provide services for individuals in long-term care facilities, and accept Medicaid. This was an administrative issue, but how it was handled is where I became frustrated. On March 26th, they said they would bill the correct insurance. I checked my insurance portal to make sure the claim was registered for 3 weeks, and never saw it populate. I reached back out on April 16th to check on the status because I didn't see it on the insurance side at all. In an email correspondence on April 16th, I was told that they billed the correct insurance on March 26th, but that she would resubmit it to make sure. Coincidentally, I finally saw the claim registered on the portal and then received the EOB in the mail on April 29th. I emailed them on the 29th to let them know that I received my copy of the EOB and asked for the timeline and process of getting a refund for the overpayment. I did not hear back. I emailed again on May 5th to follow up -- again, no reply. I called on May 6th, and as told, everything was still pending. I let the lady know that I am showing that payment was issued. She said their insurance person would review and call me back the next day. I waited all day, the next day, and again ... no call back. I called them at 1pm to follow up because I knew they closed soon, and was told the insurance person went to run an errand and would be back within an hour. I waited by the phone for 2 hours until their closing time to receive the phone call, and you guessed it ... no phone call again. It wasn't until I reached out to my dental insurance company to help with my money being held with no response from Tolley. I finally was able to get assistance and speak with a manager. There was little to no accountability, and I was told repeatedly that they ignored my requests for calls/emails because they had no information to share. Communication was the root of this issue and continued to perpetuate it throughout the past month. They continued to stand by their reasoning of not answering my emails/calls. I am disappointed as I changed my insurance specifically to become a patient here, and while the medical team was phenomenal, the front desk team and leadership of the practice is lacking basic customer service skills.
