We stopped as an activity during a road trip but had to leave a before the end of the tour to get back on the road. The home had beautiful plaster detail, original wood work, windows, doors, and fireplaces. Definitely worth visiting to appreciate the architecture of days gone by.

They were so excited about my 5yo being so into reading already! My 5yo was really excited to get her own card and the children's librarian made it a big deal which made my daughter feel very special. They have several spaces for young kids to play and sit and read. They have DVDs you can check out for free for 5 days, plenty of books. They have a lot of cool events going on over there throughout the year including Storytimes for different ages. We will be visiting this library for a loooong time.

Negatives: charges for printing, lots of papers to sign, difficult process for cards, expiration dates for cards, lose a card? You have to pay for another one have to be a certain age to use certain computers, have to have your card ON YOU to check anything out, charges for late gain quickly, attitudes from workers(specified later), and loud for a library. For the rude workers: Renee: VERY RUDE. She's the main worker. She's in charge of both the children's section AND the teenager section of the library. While she's pretty good at taking charge of the children's section, she has NO idea what she's doing in the teenager section. She's on top of everything in the children's section, but when it comes to the teenagers, she's coming in late to the programs, shutting down some of the favorite programs, never refills the snacks that the teenage section is known for and loved for, and is fairly rude to all the teenagers. I have also heard that she is very rude to the workers as well. A bad person in general. She's seen at the children's section most of the time. The workers behind the counter and in the teen section are very nice people! I love talking to Shannon and Danielle. While the people upstairs can be rude at times, the people behind the counter on the main floor are very polite and love to help with any problem that you have. Mostly pleased with this location. Renee is the only reason why I put this rating at 3 stars. You'd think I'd put it at four, but the negative effect she has on the library is so great that I have to put it a 3. I recommend this library to a LOT of people, I just recommend to stay out of the children's section.

It is a landmark in the community. It's a beautiful library. It has so many fun things for kids to do, especially during the summer. I shot the sheriff…read more.. Continuing our journey along Route 66 to Brookfield, we stopped in Gardner to see this little two-cell jail. This was a nice quick little stop to see a jail that is a relic from the past and that is open to the public. In the little area of the jail, there is a tribute to an old diner, Reverend Christian Christiansen, and an American Legion memorial. Both jail cells are open and interact-able for all your fun photo taking. Each one has a plastic skeleton inside. They must be serving a few life sentences. There is also a guestbook to sign and some Route 66 travel guides to snag, if you want to find more fun stuff to do. The two-cell jail is a fun little 10 minute stop along Route 66. A great place to pay tribute to a few different things and see a relic from the past. If some Route 66 memorabilia is something you are looking to buy, there is a Route 66 shop over and across the street to get: postcards, magnets, stickers, and various other things.

My friend and I had an errand out in this area and decided to see what else there was to see while…read morewe were here. This museum (the home of the Hegeler and Carus families, who were involved in a local zinc company and also a publishing house, Open Court Press) is a national historic landmark and is unique because it was owned by the same family the whole time, & they never made any fundamental updates to the house so it's largely as it was when designed by WW Boyington (who also designed Chicago's Water Tower and the old Joliet prison) in the 1870s. Several rooms have been restored, but you can see in areas where it hasn't where time is taking its toll (for example, the main hall was painted with egg tempera paint, and that organic element [the egg] is now degrading after 150 years). Still, the parquet floors are amazing, and details like pocket doors, carved wooden decorations and historical elements like the speaker tube system in the walls for speaking through the house are unusual! The house also contains the only German-style turnhalle (gymnasium) in a historic home in the US. Other interesting details include an ornate butsudan (buddhist cabinet shrine) due to Hegeler's interest in Eastern religions. We just took the general tour ($15), but you can do half house (upper or lower half for $50 each) or whole house tours ($100). The longest one is apparently 3.5 hours with two breaks and children are discouraged since it is long. You must register for the tours as they max out at 6 people. Despite it saying "masks are required" and our temperatures taken at the door, our guide was initially trying to take his mask off to talk and the other couple on the tour followed suit. When my friend and I left ours on, they all put them back on at some point. The rooms do have 6 foot markers on the floors, but since some of the rooms aren't big, if you had a full tour group this would be an issue. There is an elevator so the Mansion is handicap accessible. Overall, this seems to be one of the bigger attractions in LaSalle, so take a tour if you're in town.
