Well I will tell you the difference is noise, and this library is. Loud loud loud! The problem with public libraries is just that they are open to the public and every weirdo and crazy is allowed access. Police calls and rude behavior are common where as in a school setting the clientele are usually interested in studying and learning, if not the librarian just may crack them with a ruler. On a more positive note the library has an annex where they can hold presentations and seminars typically at no charge, events may range from historical, to hobbies to children reading programs. Despite all the noise and distractions the Reddick library is involved in the community, for a quiet place to read I give it one star for community involvement I give them a 5.

Popped in to see what they had in the way of local history and learned they had a large roomful of…read morebooks focusing on the county, but including surrounding counties and the state - even reaching down to Mt. Vernon. Staff was very helpful. It was a Saturday, but the place was pretty quiet (and I'm a bit fussy about noisy libraries.) Bonus was buying a paperback book that offered an insider's view of the restaurant/bar business.

Well, yes, it's JUST a library, but I've been in numerous libraries in my lifetime and I must say…read morethis one is the best by far. Extremely clean, neat and orderly. The staff are exceptional, friendly and go above and beyond to help you with anything -- if they don't have it, they do everything they can to get it for you! They offer tons of special get-together from book clubs to tot-reading meeting groups. They have this thick reference binder with lists of "Like" authors that I've never seen before -- for example, if you love to read books by John Grisham -- you like his style, but you've already read everything he wrote, the reference binder they have up at the front desk (You'll have to ask) has a list of authors that write similarly (either topic or style) to John Grisham (or any other MANY MANY MANY authors). If you are like me and often wish for a place to just "get away" from your home, kids, or husband (but can't afford to run off and hide in Jamaica), then come hide out here! Since it's a library which requires the ambiance must be quiet and peaceful, you have the perfect excuse as to why you didn't answer your cell phone ;-)

They were so excited about my 5yo being so into reading already! My 5yo was really excited to get her own card and the children's librarian made it a big deal which made my daughter feel very special. They have several spaces for young kids to play and sit and read. They have DVDs you can check out for free for 5 days, plenty of books. They have a lot of cool events going on over there throughout the year including Storytimes for different ages. We will be visiting this library for a loooong time.

My favorite thing about this library is the friendly staff. They are welcoming and always ready to…read morehelp out if needed. It is a one floor library. They have an online system so you are able to access your account from home to renew books, places holds, request books from other libraries, and view due dates. I mostly went for fictional novels. They have plenty of newer authors and most of their books are hardcover. They have a small section (two aisles) of large print books. Their children's section is decent in size with a small play area for the kids, nothing special but my three year old loves it. Their nonfiction section has a little bit of everything, but again, nothing out of the ordinary. Typically I needed to request nonfiction materials online from other libraries. Their magazine section is quite nice and there are several pieces of leather furniture for cozying up and reading on. I liked how they had a magazine exchange where you could bring old magazines to add to the bin for others and take other people's old magazines home with you. They have plenty of computers that can be accessed with a library card but you may not use them if you have fines. There are walk up computers for quickly looking up call numbers and books are easily found where they should be. Overall, a great library.

I was told Christmas is a really great time to visit. I didn't even know about this mansion until a few days ago. I searched for other things around Starved Rock and foind the mansion. It was the best part of the day.

Beautiful turn of the century home. The docent was very knowledgeable (maybe a bit too…read moreknowledgeable). She shared the history of the home, it's pervious uses and work being done to restore it to the time of the Reddick family's occupancy. We stopped as an activity during a road trip but had to leave a before the end of the tour to get back on the road. The home had beautiful plaster detail, original wood work, windows, doors, and fireplaces. Definitely worth visiting to appreciate the architecture of days gone by.

I will say this, the library is a place that welcomes all and while that is beautiful it does attract a couple of interesting characters. But, everyone tends to mind their business and keep themselves occupied. I do feel safe at this library. They use to have security guards at the entrance however, the last few visits I have not seen any. I can confidently say though that this library takes the safety of the community very seriously. I did have a scary encounter here back in the summer. I was getting some work done when the PA system came on and told everyone to evacuate the building immediately. Obviously, I don't take these things lightly and with the worst case scenario running through my mind I collected my things and left ASAP! As I was leaving police were already surrounding the building. The evacuation was calm and orderly. After going home and doing some research it turns out someone did put in a threat towards the library. Seeing how the situation was handled really affirmed my confidence in the competency of this library. I'm giving four stars because on a more recent visit I had a hard time finding a table to sit that had working outlets. Don't get me wrong, I walked past many tables with built-in outlets but every time I tried to plug in my laptop it unfortunately didn't work. I did finally find one all the way towards the back and was able to get some work done! It really is a grand library! It would be perfect if they ensured all offered amenities were always working properly. Other than that, I do love this library!
