The first thing you'll notice about this library is that it's gorgeous. It may be the most beautiful building in all of DeKalb, particularly in the summer, where a large front porch sports a soothing fountains and an array of container plantings. It's just as gorgeous inside, with a fireplace and a restored WPA mural. The collections here are really good - the librarians try very hard to pick good stuff, and they've also got a grant for graphic novels. The staff is helpful, friendly, and smart, and if you can't find what you're looking for, it'll be in from interlibrary loan in a few days. The library also features a huge array of programs including book clubs, children's programs, weekend coffee shops, and little wine and music concerts in the stacks, as well as an exceptional yearly fundraiser used book sale. This place is a jewel among libraries, and I can't help but adore it. read more

The library building itself is on the National Register of Historic Places. They have a couple of comfy chairs to sit in, and collections of audio, audiobooks, books, VHS movies and movies on DVD. The card catalog is searchable on-line from home, and they're part of a really good interlibrary loan program - they'll send you email notices when your ILL stuff comes in or your books are coming due. If you like business books, check out their collection; it's pretty current. There is an ongoing booksale and free paperback/magazine exchange in the basement, and then once a year they have a really big book sale (come the last day for dollar-bag bargains). They also have a good summer reading program, with real prizes (I got a $20 gift certificate to Borders one year for reading lots of science fiction books), in addition to ongoing interest groups (science fiction book club, teen anime club, etc.). They are closed Sundays from Mother's Day until school starts, which is annoying but certainly something one can work around. read more

I've worked in libraries for most my life, either as a volunteer or an employee. With that much experience, take my word when I say this is an amazing library. Spanning three floors they boast a modest DVD section, large collections on almost every written subject, and numerous magazines and papers. If they do not have what you are looking for, one of the innumerable libraries linked to them probably do. There is nothing I have searched for and been unable to receive. Their card catalog is online, though if you have any trouble their reference librarian is wonderful and loves to help people. They also installed self-checkout stations recently, thought I have yet to use them. Located in a gorgeous building, they blend old class and new technology seamlessly. read more

I'd definitely give 5 star for this library especially after they remodeled. They use the space in an excellent way and offer plenty of space both inside and outside of the library. Pristine and impressive outlook! Very friendly and professional staff too. Visiting the library on a sunny day such like today, it makes me appreciate even more about how well they design this library to embrace the sun light. Several other people commented on the beauty of this library. I am not especially interested in my library's historic qualities and rarely spend time actually hanging out there, but it does have a sense of majesty about it. The outdoor seating area is particularly nice in the summer time--a fountain, flowers, and plenty of seats with natural or umbrella-created shade. Yet what impresses me more is their extensive network. As members of Prairie Cat, the DeKalb Library allows patrons to search and order from collections across the state--for free and with a fairly quick couple-day turnaround on average. There is also access to audio books and CDs, e-books, and even movies and video games! Their circulation system is also nice. I appreciate that I get e-mail reminders when old books are due or new ones arriving, and each checkout gives you a printout of everything you have out. I have only a few suggested improvements: more comfortable and trendy seating areas, coffee bar, and longer checkout times--especially for best sellers. read more

A wonderful old library in DeKalb that has a real intimiate old school old building feel to it. The place is divided into two sections and has a narrow staircase from the downstairs children's section to upper adult. The library is not one of those typical oversized structures you find in the Chicago suburbs and I often like to go here whenever nearby. They are planning on expanding this building unfortunate and can only hope it doesn't ruin the small town library look of this place. Most libraries are too open and have to many windows. read more

Great time looking at the new library in Dekalb. Huge improvement from the 70's library. I do like how they preserved some the past. Also the pictures of the old library. The available computer in the tech area was impressive. Demi at the helpdesk was awsome and so was the young women (didn't see her name tag like Demi) at the main reception desk. Plenty of space for reading once you find that book to indulge into. Cheers and go see the awesome library in Dekalb. read more

I always enjoy this library. They have nearly doubled in size after their remodel. This library has a wonderful selection of books and magazines. Although, what I enjoy about my home library is that they have genres or topics of books at the end of each aisle. I think this library could really benefit from that. Don't get me wrong--I love to wander around bookstores and libraries. Yet, when I went something particular I want to get in and out. read more

I am very disappointed with the way the children program is ran. my daughter and I were invited down only to be ignored by the teacher all together. Three white boys were trying to hit her and know one said anything about it. But when I saw what was going on I jumped up and said some thing. I had high hopes for this library children program But NOT anymore it felt very distant, disrespectful, unliberal and my Daughter will never attend again! Book selection is good. They have a book checkout upstairs that needs to have a sign on it that says..don't use this check out. I used it and the ignorant lady downstairs yelled at me. So, rude employees in the adult section, need to learn how to approach people correctly.. ruined my trip there on multiple occasions. read more

Went to most big summer programs - they were free! Kids had fun time. Was invited so went to both science shows June 18th and they was a LOT of kids. Science teacher focused on science though corrected kids she noticed - specially those without adult. Library lady correcting table where little white boy acting up like goof. My favorite show was with dogs. Kids liked balloon guy and reptile show. Don't give up on shows. They was all outside programs brought in, so all different. Library ladies LOVE people to come to library for any and all reasons. read more
