In the spring of 2017, my wife and I undertook the project of a complete renovation of our 1923,…read morecolonial including a 2 story add-on addition to the first floor kitchen; install of 1st and 2nd floor bathrooms; complete rewiring of original electric; basement refinishing; restoration of original and install of new floors; removing wall between dining room and kitchen; incorporation of enclosed porch into rest of house; installation of central air; construction of new deck off of kitchen. We chose Brian from 4 different architects based on his portfolio as well as his general demeanor in dealing with people. He gave us several design options when we told him our wish list and worked closely with us in the lead-up to the actual construction; tweaking the designs to accommodate our ideas and presenting us with alternative ideas to help us realize better design options. Brian's familiarity with Teaneck, NJ building codes was very important to our project as my wife and I had heard from other contractors and architects that Teaneck is a lot more stringent than other townships. We found this to be true during subsequent inspections during the 6-month course of construction as well as post-construction application for Certificate of Occupancy. Brian was with us every step of the way, helping us resolve unforeseen issues (HVAC) as well as providing various drawings required by the township at various stages leading up to the CO. We can whole-heartedly recommend Callahan Architecture for the quality of the work as well as quality of Brian's character.

Jim is very detailed and each week during renovation, we had him manage the project with the contractor to ensure the final output was done properly. Most Manhattan apartments are not symmetrical, so the early stage on doing things a certain way goes a long way on the final look. He understands plumbing, and electrical well to communicate to our contractors. He referred us to a HVAC engineer. When it came to interior design, we had Sarah who provided feedback and suppliers information. She was also very helpful. Jim knows the DOB process well and helped us resolved many issues even during covid and DOB rule changed in 2020 and 2021. We also had him manage the project with the contractors. The contractors don't have the same design eyes and were a bit sloppy and forgetful so it was imperative to have Jim help us. Urban charges by the hour and provided an accurate estimate of the cost. Make sure what projects he's working on so he can allocate time properly. In the beginning with the design drawing schematic, it took a while cause he was on a couple of brownstone projects but overall still have a very positive experience with Jim. He was responsive.
