Springer & Ting

Springer & Ting

We had 2 projects done by this duo…read more The first was a renovation of a very small kitchen - to get it to function with modern-sized appliances. Mary (the Ting in the Springer & Ting) did some minor tweaking - walling off a doorway, shifting another - to achieve full functionality within a very tight space. The second - we were having a colonial home built, and wanted a more open floor plan on the first floor, and more equal-sized bedrooms on the 2nd floor. Mary redid the builder's layout completely, placing bathroom and laundry in the interior so that more light would be available for the breakfast area at the corner of the house. The builder (who did not normally like working with architects) was impressed, as the final design was very "buildable" and sensible (from his perspective). We couldn't be happier.

I made sure to have them come by to give me advice on my historic home when they came through Dallas that winter. I didn't hire them to do a major renovation like most of their clients do, but I was very happy with the consultation we had about my house. Todd is thoughtful and deliberate, like a sweet knowledgeable grandfather, and Mary is intelligent and energetic. She even had some brilliant tips for my garden. They seem to genuinely care and had a lot of experience from much older homes up North to draw from. Their perspective made me excited and confident about the changes I'll be making to my historic home in the next couple years.

Scott Springer is a wonderfully talented architect who is an absolute pleasure to work with. Scott…read moredid complete redesign of our old and disjointed kitchen. He took a large space and made it every square inch functional for our family. The finished product is absolutely beautiful and I am so happy in this space! In addition to our kitchen, we were working with Scott to do an addition of our upstairs to include a master bath suite and closet as well as adding a fourth bedroom. Scott was very much involved with every aspect of the "leg work". He attended countless meetings with our General Contractor, recommended a fantastic structural engineer, and worked closely with the surveyor. After hearing our initial concerns, Scott advised us against doing this addition as he felt that it would not be a good return on our investment. I was so very impressed by his honesty! He knew this would be a decision we would regret and he was right! Scott has wonderful ideas and insight and listens to his clients to provide the best possible solution that will fit your needs! He is prompt and responsive in his communications and delivers drafts to you on their deadline (if not before!). Choosing Scott as your architect means you will work with an experienced, honest and trust worthy professional who has your best interests in mind!

I saw a passive house he was gut renovating in Park Slope, and it was absolutely stunning! Jim knows how to preserve historic details while bringing the design into the modern era in a tasteful, classic way. He exudes calmness and wisdom and is a pleasure to be around. Full disclosure in that I ultimately had to choose a less experienced architect because Jim's fee, although completely reasonable given his level of skill and expertise, was a bit out of our price range.

Jim was great to work with. We did a semi-gut renovation in 3 bedroom/2 bathroom apt. The quality…read moreof his work and suggestions were exactly what we wanted based on my husband and my feedback. Jim is very detailed and each week during renovation, we had him manage the project with the contractor to ensure the final output was done properly. Most Manhattan apartments are not symmetrical, so the early stage on doing things a certain way goes a long way on the final look. He understands plumbing, and electrical well to communicate to our contractors. He referred us to a HVAC engineer. When it came to interior design, we had Sarah who provided feedback and suppliers information. She was also very helpful. Jim knows the DOB process well and helped us resolved many issues even during covid and DOB rule changed in 2020 and 2021. We also had him manage the project with the contractors. The contractors don't have the same design eyes and were a bit sloppy and forgetful so it was imperative to have Jim help us. Urban charges by the hour and provided an accurate estimate of the cost. Make sure what projects he's working on so he can allocate time properly. In the beginning with the design drawing schematic, it took a while cause he was on a couple of brownstone projects but overall still have a very positive experience with Jim. He was responsive.
