Sherrie's Restaurant - Meatloaf Hot Sandwich

Sherrie's Restaurant

Sherrie's had been on our short list of places to try yet it still took us a while to get here…read more Suffice to say, it's well worth the wait... but don't put it off any longer! There's a shared parking lot outside the restaurant, so don't let a crowd scene dissuade you from stopping by. The restaurant is bigger inside than it looks from the outside. We were greeted warmly as we walked in and were seated immediately. Our server was very friendly and cheerful and she happily explained a few highlights on the menu. ASIDE: That Friday Fish Fry has got to be awesome; 'nuff said! Mind you, Smokin'Hubster makes great omelettes. His breakfasts are all good, but the omelettes are a step above. After visiting Sherrie's - and ordering omelettes - he's mentioned more than a few times that he wants to go back for more. He ordered the Farmer's Omelette and secretly wondered if he he should order a side of potatoes. When he 'fessed up on the way home, he admitted that the omelette was way bigger than he expected and he was pretty full as is. I, on the other hand, worried about finishing my Italian Omelette without additional sides. Cudighi is a local treasure and the folks that do it well tend to do it generously. In fact, this might be my favorite way to enjoy cudighi! Too often the bread makes or breaks the sammich, but an omelette this good is a way better showcase of flavors. Super melt-y cheese, lots of 'shrooms and just the right tough of sauce; balanced without being sloppy. The miracle of the toast is still discussed today. Both the Hubster and I are rye toast fiends and when we learned that the bread is made on-site... done and done. It really made a perfect accompaniment to the omelettes. Flavorful without a bulky chew, so it toasts perfectly and melts in your mouth. If I was a toast snob - and I might be - this would be in the top three of the Best Toast List. It's that good!

Busy place packed with people on a Sunday morning who seemed to all be locals. The service was fast and attentive. The French Toast and strawberry pancakes were delicious as was the Western Omelette. The Biscuits and gravy were loaded with big chunks of sausage and had a spicy kick to them. Only negative was the coffee was really weak. I tasted the creamer more than the coffee. But we would definitely come back when visiting NMU. Prices are much more reasonable than some of the breakfast places in downtown Marquette. Ambiance is low key and the waitresses seem to knock w everyone who walked in.

As luck would have it, I chatted with a new local friend a few days before and 'got the lowdown' on Mama Mia's. Her words and advice were spot on! She gushed over the bread - so good! - and mentioned how she and her mom often shared plates because the serving sizes are so generous. She also said that they used to make their own spumoni and, admittedly, I hoped that was still true (I didn't confirm one way or another). There was a 20 minute wait. Our hostess was running a tight ship and we were confident in her forecast, so we chatted and looked over the carryout menu, planning our meals. It was pointless, of course, because it was still hard to decide! Our server Missy took great care of us, from fetching a craft beer menu to boxing up our leftovers. The restaurant was busy yet we never felt a moment of neglect. The hustle is STRONG here, with servers weaving intricately between the tables with food and beverages. It was a bit like dinner and a show! I had the tortellini Parmesan dinner, which started with one of the best bowls of minestrone that I can recall. The vegetables were on point, firm with no mush. The dinner salad had a lot of lettuce but also a nice collection of 'stuff' including cheese, meat and olives. I loved the tortellini; straightforward and not smothered, it let the pasta shine. Smokin'Hubster had the stuffed shells a la carte and added some meatballs. Everything was well-presented and prepared, super tasty and, well, it tasted like it was made with love. Nonna would approve! Because I had the dinner, I had my choice of ice cream. While I had hoped for the spumoni, the option I chose was amaretto Mackinac Island and it was divine. If they didn't make it on prem, they have an amazing partnership. I can't recall the last time I had ice cream after dinner and I certainly don't ever think that I've remembered it so fondly a week later. Trust me, it's THAT GOOD! In the best Italian tradition, the leftovers were even better the next day. The value cannot be overstated. We were fat, dumb and happy twice with this dinner. Crazy as it sounds, Smokin'Hubster was already planning a carryout order because he wants to try some other dishes (as do I)!! Start to finish, it was the best date night! Lots of street parking and easy to find in the burgeoning metropolis of Ishpeming. Get yourself here and enjoy la dolce vita!

Well, we were just about to embark on a road trip and drive through the area, so we made it a point to try some. Ralph's seemed to be the most recommended and we dropped by for a late weekend lunch. The business is a small grocery store, selling various Italian sundries, frozen cudighi, cheesecakes and desserts, and homemade salads and soups. The more important area is the counter in the back, where you can place your order for sandwiches and other treats. Since we had never tried cudighi before and we weren't particularly hungry, we decided to only start with a single sandwich. Sitting near the kitchen door was a sign for homemade chili and we were enticed to order a bowl as well. Cudighi Sandwich, Medium Spicy ($8.75) - This is a well constructed sandwich on an approximately 8 in hard roll cut in half. The bottom slice is slathered with ketchup and dressed with fresh diced onion. It's sprinkled with flakes of dried red pepper to help increase the heat levels. The top slice of bread has mustard and additional onion, making the bun the perfect environment for a classic hot dog. Instead, you get a patty of some of the most delicious spiced sausage you can get. While it's spiced, it's quite pleasant and not as strong as a typical Italian sausage. The meat is tender and moist with no gristle. As a result of being griddled at high heat on both sides, the exterior sports a very nice caramelized crust. The cudighi is topped with some melted, creamy low-moisture mozzarella. I'd honestly take this over most other meatball or Italian sausage sandwiches. It's that good. (5/5) Chili, 12oz ($6) - A very nice chili. At first I thought this seemed to be a bit watery, but as I took a spoon and mixed it up, I could see a large amount of vegetables and meat mixed in. There is tomato, onion, celery, both pinto and kidney beans, and a lot of small chunks of what I can only assume is cudighi. It comes with two packs of oyster crackers. Super savory, meaty, a delicious chili overall. (5/5) I absolutely recommend a stop at Ralph's while visiting the Marquette area. It's sure to become a regular for us whenever we visit the UP. Bathrooms - This is a take and go place (no seating inside), so there are no customer accessible bathrooms. Overall rating of the food this visit: 5/5
