Chicken fried, king ranch chicken, dinner roll, turnip greens, mashed potatoes, sweet potato pie
    Jeremy T.

This is an interesting find with prices from the 1970s. There are 3 dining rooms with the cafeteria line in the central room when you walk in. They have about 8 entrees, 8 or 9 sides, and about 7 pies to choose from on a daily basis. Each day has its own special too. Prices are basically a la carte, unless you order a special meal deal which includes an entree, 2 sides and a roll for about $5.69. I chose to order a special, added a 2nd entree, a dessert and a tea all for around $12. I picked chicken fried steak and the daily entree, king ranch chicken. For my two sides, I picked turnip greens and mashed potatoes. Everything was good, but the roll, turnip greens and sweet potato pie were my favorite items. I can vouch all three of those are homemade. The mashed potatoes were powdered, not homemade. The CFS and king ranch chicken were just okay, I've had better. For the steak, the meat was too tender and a low quality grade of beef. If I lived here, I'd definitely visit all the time...my waistline thanks me that I dont.

Fried fish, roll, deviled eggs, cucumbers in vinegar, sweet potato casserole, pecan pie...

One of Magnolia's all time favorites. Good southern food and lots of friendly people to share it with. Family atmosphere.

I visited Big Momma's often before I retired, and occasionally since I retired (trying to not get fat). I am treated with kindness and respect every time I go there. It's a family owned business and they work their tails off! When I go, I always think about getting something other than the fried chicken, but when I go through the line, I start smelling that fried chicken and I see that crispy skin and I mouth just starts watering. They are the best "home cooking" restaurant in Ouachita Parish. It would cost you a fortune to have the same order at Piccadilly. Everything I have had on their menu is delicious. The family/owners always have smile on their faces. I took my brother-in-law from Oregon here when he visited and he talked about it the rest of his life. If you're a local and you haven't been here, GO! If you are visiting the area, you won't find better food in the entire parish if you're looking for home cooking, but be ready for a nap! I just promised my own brother, who has never been there, that I'm taking him ASAP! PS....their dessert are THU BOMB! AND HUGE PORTIONS, one is enough for two people. Their lunch portions are huge as well. I often got an order to go and split it with my mother.

The food is on a rotating menu so make sure to check you're reading the menu for the right day you're going to be there. We discovered them about 8 months ago while traveling through, needing some less processed options than typical eatout food, and tried it. Sooo glad we did! So now that we're in the area again we knew this is where we wanted to go. We even ordered extra meals to take with us for tomorrow! Ignore the lower star reviews bc they have nothing to do with quality (and no, the food is not bland)! If you want fancy highly processed and over seasoned gut burning food, don't go here - go to an impersonal restaurant serving commercial processed foods. Mother Kelley's is true homestyle flavors, meaning it's not fancy but it's home cooked comfort food (real ingredients) like my grandmother's was (mid 20th century); you'll love it!
