Waterloo Bicycle Works - We Ride with We Arose and Experience Waterloo

Really awesome bike shop right in the middle of Waterloo. Fair prices, all the bikes and…read moreaccessories you could want, and best of all, friendly faces! They also do repairs (including a free adjustment on my bike brakes). It's always a pleasure to shop here and support local business.

We ungraded a seat on one bike, $30-something seat. Bill is $206.46, to make sure everything is tightened properly. Paid the bill. When the bikes are to be picked up two hours later one of the tires is all of a sudden blown. Inflated it the night before, today it is blown. It wasn't blown two hours ago, but I guess the warehouse is too big to have noticed that. Insulted us in the quality of bikes that we bought, said that they would have given us better service if we bought bikes from them. Right out of their mouths, not mine. My experience is bad customer service. They had a fish on the line with the bill for "set up" and figured they would take it one step further. I didn't ask for new greasing and chains or anything other than to make sure they were both ready for the road. All of the service they provided couldn't have taken more than an hour on bikes that were already put together, even if not perfectly. That's a pretty high dollar per hour charge, which I said fine. We have two bikes to ride. The tire blowing out is fishy at best. Quote a reasonable price instead of assuming a customer wants you to do a complete put together job when the bikes are already put together. Zero concern for the customer or empathy. You should have taken care of the tire, minimum. Thanks for the insults as well.

I had them refresh my tubeless setup, look at my dropper post, and replace my drivetrain. The latter was done well. However, 33.3% is a failing grade. Upon pickup Only 1 tire had a tubeless refresh because "I didn't want to do it through the tire" followed by a criticism of my bike's tubeless valves because they require a full refresh rather than the easy way of taking out the valve core and throwing new sealant in with the old sealant. Finally, the actuation switch on my dropper post was split. instead of getting me a picture of the serial #, to get a warranty started they took a pic of the damage (1.5 inches away from said serial number) then reinstalled it after charging me for new cables/housing that they knew would NOT fix the issue, knowing as well that to get it resolved I would have to redo the work I had just paid them to do for convenience sake. For $310 I would really expect better

My last trip there was to address a bottom bracket issue that I was unable to resolve. I feel like they turned my issue over to a newbie tech who tightened my bottom bracket way beyond specs. I didn't find this out until I had to remove the bottom bracket myself. The issue was finally resolved with a new crank set, still overall, not particularly satisfied with the service or attitude when I go there.

    Goldfinch Cyclery - Kona bike!

Here's the revised Yelp review with Ian properly credited and that detail woven in naturally:…read more Buying a bike from Goldfinch Cyclery back in August turned out to be a fantastic decision. We had just moved to the area, and someone recommended Goldfinch when I mentioned I was looking for a new bike. I'm so glad I listened. I test-rode a couple of bikes at first and honestly wasn't in love with the initial options. Ian, who helped me, never rushed me or tried to push a sale. His focus was clearly on making sure I ended up with the right bike for Eastern Iowa riding--not just any bike. He eventually recommended a Kona they had on display that was already outfitted with excellent tires and some really nice upgrades. I took it out for a ride and immediately loved it. Even though I own other bikes, this is the one I keep reaching for--I've been riding it consistently ever since. What really stood out was that I never felt "sold to." Goldfinch is all about matching you with the right gear, whether that's the right bike, accessories, or equipment. They did a great job getting everything dialed in and even threw in a couple of extras, which was a thoughtful touch. We've been back several times since to look at bags and other gear, and every visit reinforces why I like this shop. They remember my name, they're genuinely friendly and personable, and it's clear they truly care about the cycling community in the Cedar Rapids and Iowa City area. If you're looking to buy a bike or want a shop that puts cyclists first, I highly recommend Goldfinch Cyclery.

I got to test drive a bike on a trail and even rented a bike for several days to try out. I know without a doubt I chose a good bike for me. And then she surprisingly pulls out a color I love at the conclusion of our deliberation. I'll eventually buy another bike so when I have a friend over there's no excuse not to take a ride! My dear avid biker son, who is no longer here, liked working with Gold Finch and now I know why. The kindness of the people who work there is worthy of mention also. Happy to support this small local business!
