Everyone should know by now that Market Basket is the best! But did you know that their takeout food is also the best? I cannot say that I've ever talked to a worker there who doesn't like their job. My significant other and I were shopping for the big Patriots playoff game against Denver this weekend. We were hungry but didn't have time to go out somewhere so we decided on going to the take out section at Market Basket. We've had their pizza before, which is huge and very reasonably priced and delicious! Today we decided to split a steak & cheese with mayo, provolone cheese, and toasted. Omg! This had to be the best Steak and cheese anywhere and it was only $5.99. Where can you get a sub for that price? I swear, I will never go anywhere else for a steak and cheese sub that was a ten out of ten. I don't know why but a week before Thanksgiving the Reading Market Basket has decided to rearrange the entire store. Customers bonded today over how angry we all were, trying to findvthings. I agree with Brenda's review. I have lived in Reading for over 7 years and this location is where I have done all my grocery shopping. Not anymore! I now do it in the Woburn location and they understand great customer service there. Staff in Reading location is just outright rude and are too busy talking to one another while the cashier is ringing in your food and the bagger is bagging. They act like you are not even there. Staff rushes past you nearly knocking you over and never ever say "Excuse me", "Sorry" etc. I will say the staff at the Customer Service window are very nice and Kevin in the butcher area is very customer service oriented. Within the past 2-3 years, the workers at this place have all changed. The cashiers and baggers do not care about you, how they handle your expensive groceries, or how they bag them. They throw everything haphazardly into bags and throw them into your cart. Reading used to be a nice place. read more

This is my favorite grocery store in the area other than Costco, and this shoutout is long overdue. The prices are, like all Market Baskets, incredibly low compared to other stores, and they still have a great inventory (except for Alfredo sauce--for some strange reason they only have Rao's and Ragu amidst a sea of red sauces). I've always been greeted with kind staff members and a friendly face at the register, so top marks to all the people who work here. Perhaps my favorite section of the store is the perennially busy hot food bar: they cook up a cheap but amazingly good steak bomb (always add spicy mayo on it, trust me, it's the secret sauce), sweet potato fries, honey BBQ wings, and divinely seasoned potato wedges. I'm telling you, these are consistently the best potato wedges you will ever eat. Yep, you heard it from me: Market Basket has the best fries. Anywhere. I once asked them if they were baked or fried and received the most hilarious response: "Yes. [pause] They are fried. [pause] In oil." I will note, though, that sometimes the wings and spinach swirl pies are burnt, so do purchase them judiciously on any given day. Also, the wings that need to be heated up at home and that are sold in the refrigerated section below the hot food bar are vastly inferior--don't go for them if you can get the fresh wings: they're definitely made differently. The store is always bursting with people and is somewhat cramped compared to wholesale stores, but it's actually on the bigger side for an MB. The Stop & Shop just outside (which some MB regulars will take the liberty of visiting immediately afterward, myself included, to check for several items on sale that compete with MB) feels like a ghost town in comparison. Lastly, in terms of current COVID precautions taken: the store is no longer enforcing mask-wearing, and at least 60% of shoppers (I was last there a couple days ago) forego mask wearing (if not more). In addition, not all staff members are wearing masks anymore. Social distancing is difficult because the store is quite cramped as I mentioned previously. read more

Market Basket in Reading is by far the best market in the area. While I sometimes find myself at Whole Foods for speciality items they don't carry, Market Basket has the best prices, rapid checkout (tons of lines which move fast), and super friendly staff who can always be found. They also have pita bread which seems like it is delivered fresh every single day. :) The only complaint I have about Market Basket is that they close early (9pm) during the week and even earlier on Sunday. Having visited lots of supermarkets across the country, Market Basket is my favorite and this location is very well run. read more

Overcrowded store and parking lot. Shopping here is a contact sport. The produce and meat departments are bottom of the barrel. However, their made-to-order subs are cheap and delicious (loaded 12-inch Italian for $5), and the in-house sushi chefs do a fantastic job as well. It's always been great, but now it lost a start in my book. Been shopping there since it opened and spend well over $10,000 annually. Love the store and the prices compared to the others in the area. The majority of cashiers (6 or 7) were older females who were always friendly and efficient. What the heck happened in the past couple months? The cashiers are now non-English speaking women who do not stop talking with their friends (other baggers) and do not pay attention to their work. Management needs to train the cashiers and baggers. I witnessed a person in front of me with a pack of raw chicken thighs that had leaked raw chicken juice/blood all over the belt. The cashier picked up the dripping package and handed it to the bagger to bring over to the customer service/manager. Both of them had visibly wet hands from handling the leaky chicken package. The cashier then proceeds to wipe her hands with a dry paper towel (no soap or sanitizer) and wipe the belt. The bagger didn't even bother to wipe her hands and just continued bagging. Talk about disgusting. I left my items there and walked out. Is it that hard to train people in basic food safety? This is a usually a great Market Basket. Staff is the best. The selection has been good during the pandemic. I would have given 5 stars on my visit today--- but was shocked to find that all the signs for "one way aisles" were gone. No one sanitizing carts & no wipes or sprays for the customers to do it themselves. The only evidence of the pandemic was the plexiglass at the registers & everyone wearing face masks. Be aware of this before you head off to shop @ the Reading store UPDATE!! I was back in this store today & had to to tell everyone'THEY ARE BACK'. Don't know what was going on the last time but today staff was sanitizing carts. The 1 way aisles were marked with larger arrows on the floors. I generally do have any complaints about MB, their Staff works very hard. I usually shop at Trader Joe's in Burlington, Ma I Love, Love, Traders Joe, they clean every carriage before each use, which MB no longer does. Stop and Shop no longer does it either! Corvid 19 is still around, I think it says a lot about how much they care about their customers! I just ran in to pick up Gatorade for my Staff, so they can keep hydrated. While I was there, I picked up some cheese too. The women who was stocking the cheese, had on a mask, but it was not covering her nose I politely asked if she was aware that her mask needed to be over her nose? She did not respond or acknowledge my question and continued to stock. the cheese. I repeated the question because I was sure with the background noise, she probably didn't hear me! I was Shocked to find out that she was ignoring me! I told her, I was going to tell a manager, which didn't seem to bother her. I went to the manager and his name was Michael, who has worked for MB for 28 years. We went back to the cheese department to find her. Her mask was still below her nose, although she did pull it up upon seeing her manager. She proceeded to say she wears it 8 hours a day and it gets hot! I get it completely, does anyone like wearing a mask? I thought at least, you are fortunate to work in air conditioning, although I did not say that! I have a serious heart condition and am 64 years old which puts me in the his risk category Because of those reasons, I am extremely careful! When this 8 year employee started to talking back to me, Micheal walked her away. I asked if she was going to apologize to me, Michael did on her behalf. I felt like she should have, as she was being rude, I expressed to Michael, that I felt like that needed to happen. Although Michael did apologized again, it should have been this employee of 8 years that should have. I was very disappointed with how the situation was handled. As a business owner of 35.5 years, I would have handled it differently. The layout is the utter opposite of that of EVERY other grocery store, but it works. The store is clean and well stocked as they are ALWAYS in the aisles stocking the shelves. The variety is decent, but nothing really exotic. The main thing is the pricing. The only way you will find it cheaper will be at a discount "day old" store. The downside is that it is ALWAYS crowded. The morning, early afternoon, right before closing... ALWAYS CROWDED. I came here on a Sunday night at 6:15pm for maybe 6-8 things. They were out of three of them. Waiting at the deli for what seemed like forever as one of the staff talked to a local and then bitched me out when I said they were on number 53 (the number counter was not been updated, but she could NOT take my word for it. HAD to go through the numbers. Whatever). I finally looked at my receipt two days later. Even though I bought less than 10 items, one was rung up twice (2nd time this has now happened at a Market Basket). You'd think I'd learn to check my receipt BEFORE I leave the store. Working kiddie corner - across the way, this location has to be the most convenient for me. That's basically the only reason why I sometimes shop here. The parking is quite strange...and good luck finding anything other than in the nosebleed section unless it's when they first open. Or just before closing. I get tired of trying to squeeze through the endless aisles of rude & selfish shoppers who feel they own them. Not to mention the behavior of their children! I can't for the life me ever understand how parents can allow their children to control not only them, but basically everyone else they come in contact with. Learned behavior...... I realize that I'm now considered an " older adult" When my children were young & they acted up while we were shopping, I would STOP WHAT I WAS DOING and speak to them directly& calmly. I would give them to 2 options... One was that ' we" can not finish our shopping for things that we need if the behavior continues. That we would need to leave the store. If that didn't do the trick I would calmly stop everything, pick up my child, follow through and leave the store. This only happened maybe once or twice because they learned that I meant what I said.... There were no treats, etc. And YES, they may have cried some. But it didn't last. I don't believe in rewarding bad behavior... Do I sound like Dr Phil? Lol... But trust me. This works! Now, back to reviewing the store. I won't buy fresh produce in packages even though it may cost a bit more. I can't how many times I've gotten all the way home, opened them only to find rotten fresh vegetables or fruit.... I am finding that their produce is not worthy buying. I store everything properly, but when I went to slice a pepper the other day, the entire inside was rotten - black spots on everything. Tossed it. I also bought scallions that taste off. Not the first time I've noticed that. At first I wrote it off, now I have only to assume that they are buying inferior produce. I had a conversation with a friend a while back. Her sister won't buy produce at MB because she thinks it's inferior to other stores. We both disagreed. Well, I now agree with her sister. You can't beat the prices at Market Basket, given its status as the highest-volume grocery chain in New England. Yet as a reluctant convert over the past six months (yes, I used to call it The Cult), I've also found that you often can't beat their selection, either. Whenever I'm putting together a recipe with an obscure vegetable or fruit, I'm often surprised to discover that Market Basket has it. And it's fresh. And it's very well priced. The store is also kept spotless and I find the staff very helpful and pleasant. I find the reviews here that poke fun at people who are overweight or less than beautiful pretty morally reprehensible. This is a working class store that serves the working class, a group that works more hours yet earns less in real wages thanks to the failure of trickle-down economics over the last 30 years. Read Barbara Ehrenreich's Nickled and Dimed and give people a break. Although I default to Whole Foods for seafood and dry-aged steaks, I've found that just about everything else is probably at Market Basket. And the bustle beats the "Dead Man Walking" vibe of the Stop & Shop next door, where everyone seems completely checked out, if you'll pardon the pun. read more

Cashier at number 7 stole my dollar bill. This isn't just a regular dollar bill, it is from 1935 and worth 60 dollars! They inspected it and said it was real. We asked to have it back and trade for another dollar bill and they denied us. The lady just put in her pocket! We asked to have it back again and she kept saying no. Another lady said they gave it to another customer. I know she didn't because we were watching! She just kept it for herself! The manager even said she could keep it when we asked for it back! Other Market Basket locations sketch me out, but the Reading location is, dare I say it, nice. Grocery shopping in general can be annoying here because it's always crowded, the workers are always restocking, and people do not know how to maneuver the carts AT ALL. Though I look anti-social when I do this, it helps to listen to music. Unlike Woburn, the Reading MB has a lot of gluten free specialty foods. Additionally, a lot of the MB brand foods are labeled with green GLUTEN FREE tags. I'm not sure if these foods have been verified as such or if they're labeled based on ingredients, but it's nice that Market Basket is trying. I'm ok with their not carrying anything and everything gluten free - it gives me another reason to support my local health food store. Aside from my "weird" food, I think the quality and prices of meat, produce, and dairy are pretty good. read more

This place is so skeevie! George Romero should should shoot his next film here. I don't know where all these overweight people in ripped spandex pants and dirty "designer" running suits come from because, thankfully, I don't see them in town. I guess it's a far away place that has no food. Only that would explain why they lurch around Market Basket, banging into each other with carts absolutely overflowing, and then stand in line up to 40 minutes to pay for it!! One thing that totally amuses me is that when exiting the Market Basket parking lot, you can not turn left; you MUST leave town!! I doubt it's an issue for most of the shoppers since I think elsewhere is where their heading, but I always giggle and think that the town development board said "Well, OK, you can have a store here, but your customers have to leave right away when their done." Avoid the Deli. The meat - and I use that term quite loosely - is gross - and I do not use that term loosely. Stick to the prepacked stuff to the left of the counter if you need ham or turkey. You'll save time, and toilet paper... trust me. The fish? Way too stinky to get near. Unless you are one of "them," just don't bother coming here, unless it is at 7AM. At 7AM, the place is empty and you can just jet right through... and there are some things worth going for: an excellent "ethnic" section where you can find some genuine taste treats: pickled cactus, ginger beer, wild cucumber pickles, Asian soup mixes, and more. Cheap, quite drinkable house brand soda - 89¢ for a two liter bottle of caffeine free cola and all the other flavors. Any other name brand canned or boxed stuff for much MUCH less than Stop & Shop next door. Large boxes of candy - ordinarily $1.25 or $1.50 for $1.00. The place is awful. You will save money. One thing for me though, Bertha... you don't need to wear your "church clothes," but a clean pair of jeans and a blouse that fits would really help brighten my day. read more

First let me say I just moved back to New England after being out of state for five years in California. After living in SoCal all groceries now seem cheap! Well, despite the fact that I usually like to shop for a bargain, I do also appreciate quality. I have compared the prices at Demoulas/Market Basket with their competitors and they come out on top of the heap. They are extremely competitive and frankly have more selection than their counterparts on most food items. This is a newer location, and is ironically right next door to a Stop And Shop. The S&S parking lot is always empty, and the Demoulas/Market Basket lot is always approaching full capacity. This is an obvious tell of where you, the consumer, should be buying your groceries. The store is very clean and well organized, and for the most part the staff is quite helpful given that the place is always busy! I only have a couple of complaints about this location. I live in Reading, but unfortunately cannot turn left out of the main entrance (North Ave) to go back to Reading. Instead, I have to drive around back, by this long plaza, and try to merge with the clogged up Main Street traffic. Second, the "hot food" counter which I believe is called Market Fresh is extremely slow. The first couple of times I thought it was the same staff, but I've noted in recent visits that it is not. They just don't care. They could take a page out of the deli staff's handbook, as they are the opposite--fast and courteous. Overall, this will be my weekly destination for the grocery run, and I recommend if you live in the area to do the same. read more

Thank the God Lord that there is a closer, larger, and less crowded supermarket near me. Right down the road, instead of down the highway and through the seventh layer of Hell. God I hated Woburn. I enjoy coming here more. My visits remind me of the movie Persopholis where Marji gets to visit a real market with REAL food for the first time ever. Splendiferous! My only complaint is that they use recycled bags. I even confirmed it by asking one of the cashiers after bringing my stuff home, and then having the bags fall apart as I'm trying to enter my home. I know bagging in an easy job, but half the time when I ask simply for cold stuff in one, canned stuff in another, it's like they look at me weird and throw it all in. Or put ONE ITEM in a bag....well now you're just wasting a bag. Their meat goes bad in my fridge after 2 days. By bad I mean brown.
