They also have hot food ready to serve. This is always worth a look. To avoid the lines call ahead. When you call the store asked for the kitchen. This will save you a lot of time and everything especially pizza will be ready when you arrive. Otherwise expect a 30 or 45 minute wait since it's a well demanded product. The employees were courteous and helpful. However, this location has a serious staffing issue. Myself and about 15 other patrons were waiting 20+ minutes in line to checkout groceries while several checkouts were closed. We all waited 35+ minutes for a sandwich at Markets kitchen from several inexperienced and extremely overworked staff. Meanwhile, several employees were barely doing anything while reorganizing shelves in the store. I'm not sure who was managing this store,but they need to up their game for both the sake of the patrons and employee retention. I won't return to this location if I can help it. read more

They constantly run out of kale, and then when it is in stock, half the time, it's wilted and not worth buying. Many other fresh veggies are past due and old, but they still place them out for sale. They claim their hamburger is ground fresh daily, but it always has a next day expiration date on it. It looks good on the outside, but when you break it open, it is always brown on the inside. If it had been ground fresh that day, it wouldn't expire the next day, and it would not be brown on the inside. I see many items on shelves that are past their expiration date. They obviously do not train their employees on how to properly bag groceries. It's not rocket science, yet these kids can't seem to figure it out. This store is a joke. read more

Definitely have the most affordable groceries. But be wary of the market kitchen ordered a cheese pizza at 12:08 said it would be 1/2 wait. arrived with a car full of kids an hour later and they hadn't even started. Had to walk away or wait another 1/2 hour....boo market basket kitchen. read more

Usually when traveling from Boston we shop at a Market Basket in the city, but today we decided to try out this new location in Athol. This store is great and we are happy that we tried out this new location. The staff here was extremely polite, the store was clean, well stocked, and the savings here were amazing. Overall, this shop is similar to others we have been to, but it is closer to our house and the staff here was superb. read more

I have seen this Market Basket from the highway and decided to stop by on my way home from work. It is a newer store with wider aisles and the usual selection of products. Compared to the Fitchburg stores prices are better (toilet paper multipacks were $1.00 cheaper, for instance). They only use paper bags. I don't know if this is a local ordinance or what. Shoppers were better at following the one way arrows and maintaining social distance. Other than that it was the typical Market Basket experience I am used to. I came from the west and it is not close to exit 17. I decided to try to get to Route 2 from exit 18 on the way home. I could not get a GPS signal at all and didn't see the sign pointing to 2 until it was too late. It was a little white sign, not a big green sign. Eventually I made it to the highway in Phillipston. So if you live in the area it's good but I don't plan to go again. read more

The girl in the bakery I think her name was Sidney. She was belligerent the day I went in taking about some blond girl with blue hair while taking my cake order. She left abruptly to go stalk said girl. I refuse to ever go back to such a poorly run place with such disrespect and lack of customer consideration. We find it's worth it to shop here even though it's a 40 minute drive for us (we live in Deerfield). We have a Big Y and a Stop&Shop near us, but they're very much inferior to Market Basket in every way. The store itself is very well run and very well stocked. My only complaint: they don't carry full-size pita pockets (we get those at Big Y, Foster's, or S&S). read more

I love Market Basket. But I have one consistent point of contention with this one. I'm convinced that some silly manager(s) has hammered it into the baggers to try and cram as much as they possibly can into two bags max. I always bring my 4 bags with me, yet almost invariably they try to cram everything into 2. (I bring the extra 2 along for show..?) They should consider basic properties of physics and realize that with better weight distribution, the bags stretch less, don't dig into your fingers, and are easier to carry. We can carry more than one bag per hand, y'know. Thanks. If it was anywhere else I would give them only 3 stars due to this constant flaw, but like I said, I do love this place. read more

Struggling to cast off infused local ineptitude since opening day, the home or regional management sent several times special people to "fix" this store with varying degrees of success. They (locals) held out for a long, long time l watched it unfold. Now only a few remnants remain of that fleece em and F em add inept *attitude. l say it went for the most part but remaining is a sort of under radar cult in my exp anyway. I try not t o use them but tunnel visioned when l do. Mkt bsk is historically a great company l know it and shopped it for decades many towns, so this is how/why l measure them bona fides. Creepiness manifesting in certain departments still and some produced animal products weak looking w varying quality. Dummies prevail in this area generally although louder and increasingly less significantly as time wakes em up, post idiot cult prez many persist still. Certainly nice reasonable quiet intelligent people need to shop here and do too. A lot of love in spite of the old way. Be careful at the cafe with sandwich orders, they might over salt (or worse) out of spite if you are not regular or look or feel like "one of them" Man it hurts to share but gods honest. read more

Love this store. As far as product is concerned, they have a lot of variety. At the fish counter, you can request that they steam cook your lobster and pick it up 15 minutes later. Good assortment of fish and seafood. Low prices on meats and deli. Hot foods are very convenient, though you may find yourself standing in line for a while for the grill and ready to go stuff. Sandwiches and subs are really good. You have to try the grilled chicken sandwich with barbecue sauce, bacon, and cheese on it. Comes with fries, though you can up it to onion rings or sweet potato fries for a little more $. And I love the sushi. The man who runs that station kicks butt with his prep. He remembers customers and their preferences (who else does that??) and helps me avoid product I am allergic to (sesame seeds). read more

The store is impressive. Out in the middle of almost nowhere(let's face it, Athol didn't have a lot to offer till now.) is an oasis of civilization. The store is modern. It offers competitive prices as well as an assortment of goods that are not always available in other stores. They provide some excellent food, usually(for what they make.) a lot better then what you will find in the area. If the food weren't so good, the place wouldn't always be packed. They have sushi chefs in the store daily, making some great sushi and sashimi. You would be hard-pressed to find better or even fresher. My dad cooks a lot of exotic food, and he buys(or has me buy it.) all sorts of ingredients, not once has he ever come across anything expired or out of date. Market Basket is what you make it. You want to have a bad shopping experience there, well, with a negative attitude, you probably will. The Athol/Orange area have been taken advantage of for a long time. Now there is competition moving into the city. Some don't like it, and they don't like change. I want to say a couple of things. 1.) Is the world a perfect place? That would be a No. 2.) Will changes ever happen if management doesn't know about them? That would be a No. 3.) What sort of experience will you have in a place if you already have a negative attitude about the situation and life in general? I heard some God awful stuff on the school bus and the playground when it came to foul language. Far worse then I have ever heard anywhere else. Staff shouldn't be swearing where anyone can listen to them. If you don't tell management, however, the bad apples won't get taken care of if no one knows about them. Thrilled that a Market Basket finally came to the area. The prices are great, the isles are large, the store is clean, and the staff is friendly. Everything is brand new, with everything stocked, fresh fish, produce and everything you need in between. The only thing good about this market basket store is the sushi, and bakery department which is an easy 5 star review. The rest of the store deserves 0 stars. All managers are incredibly rude and inappropriate. I heard people giggling about provocative things in the next aisle, when I turn the corner it was two managers in red jackets! This is a terrific grocery store. I often stop two or three times a week on my way home from work. Great location, nicely laid out, clean, wide aisles, friendly service at the deli, fish counter and bakery! Huge savings is what brings me here, convenience keeps me coming back. As far as overgrown bag boys....? I am well-pleased if market basket employs those who may be challenged (if that's the case) Don't flatter yourself Twig. Last year many of us stood with and halted our shopping at mkt baskets. It was a great thing for all of us to face the giant problem of greed and bad treatment by many american institutions in recent years. My area was lucky enough to have a new mkt basket that was put on hold at this time but now is open. However it is a sad day because l will mostly return to the other location(s) Athol is sort of beleaguered anyway so although sad l am not too surprised as the following errors have occurred in as many weeks. 1) absolutely no bananas one afternoon (not even green. 2) mkt basket chicken packages that looked uniformly bad but that was the only uniformity. Bleak yellow, almost white, shades of every disturbing color you can imagine. I am sure most people know what I mean, just exceedingly sick looking chicken.Not one out of twenty looked remotely edible. Now today strike three times two., Advertised @ .99 greenhse tomatoes pretty good right? not if virtually every one is borderline rotten... you know pitted on the crown with dimples and small holes here and there. So this is the gondola says me to myself and round the corner to find the main bin exactly the same issue, not even one firm tomato. I wanted to scream but instead bagged 2 vine units and went to get lettuce now at home l see one of them is near punk as well. I picked up the last head of green leaf lettuce.The absolute last one.. no fresh spinich says l? Elsewhere and throughout this NEW store I have noticed much lacking as far as bad store set up as in nothing makes sense the way it's laid out, just generally bad aisle layout planning. And as if this were not enough certain items look as if they are solely there to profit take in a real contrast to either of the 3 other mkt baskets I have shopped at regularly. ALL in all this place is depressing I am shocked at how bad it compares. Shame on the management at athol market basket. read more

Three words: AWESOME, AWESOME, AWESOME! Everyone in our area has been waiting for this store to open up and it was well worth the wait! It's a very big store (but not overwhelming), clean, great employees who are friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. Lots of parking. . The layout in Athol is a bit different from the Leominster Market Basket, but it seems to be a better layout. For example, the pre-packaged cheese (on hangers) and eggs are in aisle #2 with the hot dogs, bologna and kielbasa. This appears to have reduced the bottlenecking which usually occurs in the Dairy dept's aisle #1 at other Market Basket stores. . Prices are lower here than at the local competition and there is a wider selection of products here than what the local competition has offered the community up to now. . Happily, even though the Athol Market Basket store doesn't stretch as far back as the Leominster Market Basket store, it still seems to offer everything Leominster offers. . Something different which the Athol location has is what looks like a small food court. located up at the front of the store beside the Bakery dept. (turn left when you enter the store. . Salads - sandwiches - soups - pizzas -chicken - hot meals - It's a very nice touch. You can grab something to eat there or take it, check out and go home to enjoy! One more thing. While you are in the Bakery dept., try some of the fresh-baked glazed doughnuts which, at the time of this review, are one dozen doughnuts for $3.49. They are every bit as delicious as Dunkin Donuts's glazed donuts, in my opinion. . There is also freshly brewed coffee available too. Not everything will be "running on Dunkin's" once folks taste what Market Basket's "food court", and bakery area offers! Come to think of it, I believe the coffee is the Dunkin's brand. :-) This is a really good store! read more

We love Market Basket. We made the trek from Athol, Mass to Rindge NH once a week for ten years to do our shopping. However, like anything there a couple small irritations with the Athol store. Nothing big. First, the baggers. I think the baggers need some more training. Some look at the bag and food like they have no idea what they are supposed to with it. Then you have the bagger and cashier talking about their weekend plans. They are not paying attention to what they doing. Hey, I've been there. I worked for Victory Supermarkets back in the day. We had good training and were taught to pay attention to the customer. Second; I love a chocolate shake in hot weather. I have stopped at the cafe to order a shake three times and once was told they were out of chocolate ice cream. (look in your freezers) Second time I was told the machine was working. Third time I was told it was too late in the day to start a new batch because the machine was clean and they didn't want to clean it again and through out any extra they didn't sell. This was at 4 p.m. Their weekly circular had the shakes on sale. Couldn't get one. Maybe next week. Final, Market Basket is by far above and beyond other supermarkets anyway around. This place saves me so much money on my groceries every week because I read their circular and plan all my meals with items they have on sale and most important, I make a shopping list and a wish list for an extra I can fit in monthly to try. Their selection is awesome and the store is kept very clean. If you ask any employee a question, as I have many times, they go out of their way to show you exactly where you can get the item you want.
