Need a break from the craziness of The Strip? Check out the only free art museum in the city of Las Vegas. Honoring the belief that everyone deserves access to the arts (five stars just for that!), the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Art is part of the UNLV College of Fine Arts and features rotating exhibits of emerging and student artists. Formerly a gym on campus, it's now one large gallery space cleverly divided into smaller exhibitions. It didn't take us long to see everything. I took my 12 year old grandson thinking he would be interested in the art exhibits. I was under the impression that this was an art museum featuring wall art from different artists (paintings, lithographs, etc). There were exhibits in only 3 rooms and we both found them boring. I paid for 2 hours of parking and we were in the museum for a total of 20 minutes! read more

Beautiful free museum! (Donations welcomed). I stopped by today and I was actually the only person inside, not a problem! I wandered around and saw beautiful artwork that truly makes you think. The employee in the front was super sweet and answered all my questions. They change artwork twice a year, so I'll definitely come back during the summertime. read more

Art in Las Vegas? You bet! We are so lucky to have this contemporary gallery right here on the UNLV campus where emerging artists are featured from all over as well as current art major students. Plus, there are multiple locations around the UNLV campus that feature art. Even though I attended this university, I had a hard time finding this museum. Thank goodness for helpful students. This museum is housed in the original UNLV gym but the ever changing art displays would never let one know that it was once a gym. There is no charge for admission and you are pretty much on your own to view the art unless you have booked a tour. I came to view "Sorry for the Mess" by Justin Favela and Ramiro Gomez. I was drawn to this exhibit as these two young artists collaborated to bring artwork about labor, childhood memories and life in Las Vegas. Being raised here in Las Vegas, I knew I would be able to relate to many of their pieces. I really enjoyed this exhibit and would definitely return again in the future for other shows. When visiting the UNLV campus, be sure to stop in here as you never know what might be on display. read more

I loved visiting this museum! The art exhibits were interesting to learn about and fun to look at. I went on a field trip here and the lady who toured us around was very nice and asked us questions to kind of get us thinking instead of just showing us the art then moving on to the next one. Although I do wish we could have toured the whole museum, I'm overrall satisfied with the visit. I also liked the layout of the museum in general, the lighting and the quietness of the room was very calming and nice to be in. Might visit again if I can!! read more

Visiting this museum today and our wonderful tour guide is so helpful informing our group about the artists and the each individual piece of art here, all while keeping us on a tight time stamp. This is a real art gallery that even though is located on the UNLV campus. What a wonderful space too and all of the staff and students are always reminding the kids not to touch or lean, since allow a lot of tours for the public and such. It is interactive for the kiddos so very family oriented and they incorporate educational fun with two activities that they can reflect on; regular adults welcome to do this too. I did. Such a beautiful gallery that is one of the oldest on UNLV campus, this used to be the original gym. In fact, the gym floor is the main gallery and creaks when one walks. But is so very nostalgic that they have up kept it for so long. The art is amazing and it changed about three times a year. My favorite piece was the Estrada piece. It is Spanish for Stardust, and it is the emotional connection that the artist shares with the community. Also, to mention all of the artists that have art pieces or work here were somehow part of the Vegas at one time or still are. read more

One of the best art museums in the Valley with such a pleasant, welcoming, and intellectual staff! The museum's main exhibit changes about three times a year. Right now, the artist is Amanda P. (@alonglastname). Amanda is on a mission to tell others about her research in science, along with many others, by using art and design. There are so many multimedia pieces in her exhibit, "Connective Tissue" and a large portion of it is even hands on! My favorite part of the exhibit is the 3-D printed busts of women that each have their own QR code to scan and read more about each female Scientist and what she did. The Barrick Museum is one of the best places to catch amazing contemporary art in Las Vegas. This is likely one of the only museums in the city that not only exhibits work from its celebrated and recognized MFA students, but it brings in exhibits from emerging artists from all over. Located in the University's old gym, there seems to be a unique aesthetic to the space itself. The original hardwood floors juxtapose against the uniquely designed ceiling. At one point, the museum only exhibited earlier man-made artifacts. Selections from this older collection can still be viewed in a specific section of the museum. The majority of the museum hosts a range of work from up-and-coming artists. Exhibits change a few times a year, so there is always reason to come back. Another reason to come back is for the great lecture-based programming held in the auditorium right outside the museum. The Art Department hosts lectures from other emerging artists that are usually free and open to the public. Many other lectures are hosted in the space as well. read more

I haven't spent a lot of time at the museum displays. Rather, I often to to the Barrick for the UNLV Forum lecture series. The museum is small as others have pointed out, but it's exhibits are wonderful. I love the little sand digging option for youngsters to enjoy and learn while digging in sand. There's a new exhibit starting in two days called "Visions of Peru." I'll have to stop in and see it. The curators have a sense of community and humor. Small but professional art museum hidden away on the UNLV campus- adjacent lot is reached via Harmon, building is between the WRI and the Environmental Sciences. Come on a Saturday (open noon to five) for better luck with parking. Admission is free and I believe staff are students and volunteers. Shout out to the female employee with the classy English accent who gave incredibly detailed directions that allowed me to find a place I would otherwise have missed. read more

I continue to believe this in the untapped contemporary art gem in Las Vegas. I usually only go on Fridays, post 1PM, where you can really park in any spot out front and not get ticketed and in general is less busy. There is no charge for admission, so be it you are cash poor and need to go for free or you are well funded and are willing to toss in a few bucks into their donation box to show your support, both kinds of visitors are welcome. They seem to have all sorts of options for your kiddo's. Although I have no kiddo's and wish yours might be quiet while people like me are browsing around, I absolutely believe in exposing art to kids when they are young. To be honest though, I was recently in with my "guide daughter," who is 9 and we spent an hour and half in the space discussing art and ideas and interacting with the great pieces hanging on the wall. Contemporary art is a natural fit for kids and creativity, right? The contemporary art shows I see when I am in town are top notch. Really special cool stuff not seen by enough people, SO GO! This museum is also the perfect size. Not too big and takes up a whole day and not too small to be unimportant for you to make the effort to get over the UNLV to see it. I love it! Although I live full time out of the country, I love that this museum is here and remains such a spectacular memory to my visits back to Las Vegas. I will never come to Las Vegas and not visit. read more

I don't plan to visit here ever again. The museum is nice but very small. The helpful, young lady volunteer was very nice. This area is not good. I used to live nearby many years ago and it has gone downhill. If you are not a student, there is no parking for you, none. I parked at a Subway quite a ways away and walked here. Also there is a desert plant garden next door. Twenty years ago it was very nice. Now it is unimpressive, hardly noticeable. read more

I'm glad I visited and the price is right since admission is free. I would have liked it more if they had a greater variety of artifacts. It's just a lot of the same stuff. The parking is metered and I paid for two hours worth of parking but I was through everything in about an hour. read more

The museum here is ok. I decided to come to this museum on October 12, 2017 around 2 p.m. because my tuition is paying for this and I wanted to get my money's worth. The museum doesn't have much, just more of few portraits and statues. The museum has lots of empty spaces and kind of pointless for a little child to come here. They do have little televisions that plays videos for people interested in historic times. They have staff here but they don't help at all. They all sit in their offices hanging around talking with each other. There was one employee cleaning the museum, at least that employee cares about her job. If you are bored and just want to relax for a few minutes, I recommend to come here. But if you want something interesting and get your money's worth, go somewhere else. read more

Perhaps by big city standards, the Barrick is a modest museum, but programming and exhibitions can transcend "modest" walls, especially when access to the museum is free. The standing exhibitions showcase the museum's pre-Columbian and ethnographic art. Most recently, I saw a vast collection of masks. The multitude of colors and designs were eye-catching and inspiring. The gallery space delivers quality, visiting exhibitions, from international to regional. The versatility of the space allows the museum to host a wide variety of shows. The museum also provides opportunities for the community to contribute art in a Community Gallery, which regularly showcases themed exhibitions. In addition to visual art, the museum also regularly hosts lectures and the occasional film series. With all of the programming and outreach efforts (including free coffee Mondays!), it is clear that the Barrick is striving to be a hub for Vegas culturati. These efforts deserve big kudos. Now, if only I could find a place to park! read more

In a City filled with glitz and glam...or at least an offering of those things.. It's quite a beautiful thing to sit back within yourself and enjoy the heart of someone else's creativity. My second trip to the Marjorie Barrick Museum was as fantastic as the first, only this time amongst fellow elite Yelpers. A spectacular exhibit of Comic renderings and the history of the craft alongside some other very well put together art pieces was something more than a treat. If you have never had the chance, do your soul a favor and visit the museum for a fresh perspective on the World around you, and If nothing else.. Sit and enjoy the flow of art around you. Visited this museum on a trip to Vegas last year. They have some really interesting exhibits. I really enjoyed the Day of the Dead items as I am fascinated with this holiday and its intent to celebrate life rather than mourn. Also the Huipil textiles are beautiful to look at and they reminded me of the Mola that the Kuna women create. So much work go into these and they are not just fashion they have so much meaning...much is conveyed via color and pattern and layers. They make the term fashionista almost ancient. :) Anyone with the least bit of interest in history would enjoy this. It does not take a full day but a few hours are needed to see everything in detail. read more

Wow. What happened here? I stopped by on 2/27/13 and the place was nearly empty. No more cool masks. No more wooden artifacts. Almost everything is gone! Everything that made this place a neat little place to walk around has vanished. There's only a handful of paintings, a few modern-esque sculptures and a case of clothing. I know they have no money left, but geeze, there's no pull here anymore. Sad. read more

The staff could not have been more rude. The 2 times we asked someone a question, they acted as if a great imposition had been placed upon them to answer as to where the bathrooms were located. Had the pleasure of attending this museum last night with fellow yelpers. By far the smallest museum I have ever been to, but the knowledge and quality was still there. I've been coming here since I was an undergrad at UNLV in 2002. Back then there was a bigger emphasis on natural history. I recall that there was no less than three stuffed bears, including a polar bear, and a lot of stuffed birds. They also used to have live animals out front, but do not any longer. Now the emphasis seems to be shifting towards rotating art displays, which suits me. My favorite recent exhibit was the Ice Next Time," an exhibition of fictional post-apocalypse textiles, clothing, and artifacts. There is an alcove with relevant documentaries and videos playing that you can enjoy, and the museum often has events for all ages, including fun stuff for both kids and adults. The xeriscape outside is one of my favorite places on the UNLV campus because it gives you a nice shady place to relax and enjoy desert plants (and lots of birds and lizards). read more

This is more a reflection on UNLV than the museum. I couldn't find it! Youll need to bring a student because I'm assuming most people visiting this museum are students. As a first timer to campus, it was hard to find parking, which ended up being very far from the museum and only took $1 which I didn't have. After walking around in 100 degree heat with no directories other than cryptic jumbles of abbreviations, I hit a few dead ends then left when I started to die of heat. I'm looking forward to visiting when I'm more prepared to spend all day finding it or have a friend with parking and directions. read more

This place is now my favorite place to chill and relax while i'm in school. In between classes i eat and then hang out here on the couches. They have a museum as stated, filled with art and paintings and sculptures. There is also a movie theater where they play select movies and anyone can go in and enjoy! They have a kid's section too so if they want to color and draw and have fun! The staff is very friendly so don't hesitate to ask them for help or just anything at all! Such a relaxing place. A very nice little museum tucked away in the UNLV campus. The place was fairly deserted when I visited in early July. The work on show was predominately students work. Of the work there was of course a few stand out pieces which made it worth the visit. The theme of these artists strongly reflect their surroundings in Las Vegas. The museum is a welcome break from the strip. read more

Mixed feelings about this place. The traveling show on view when I was there was lovely. A small display of Mesoamerican artifacts was fascinating and well presented. But, the vast majority of the collection is not displayed, so most of what you see on the website you will not see when you visit. read more
