    Expectations were very high coming in here. I've never had a bad experience (aside from one random…read moretime) at a Michelin ** so knew it was going to be good. My travel agent booked me this and Bel Canto for back to back nights so I was excited to report back on this for her! Alma did not disappoint. I read ahead of time about the vibe and menu choices. You can pick tasting menu or à la carte, but unlike most places, you know what's on the tasting menu and you can choose from the fish forward one or another one. Opted for à la carte, for the first time ever when given a tasting menu option because it was basically designing your own. You can (and should) also add on the "chef's surprises" and then you have your own tasting menu. The service was great while being non-intrusive. It's a more casual and warm vibe than a lot of other more traditional fine dining experiences. Think warm and cozy dining room, no white linens, somewhat open kitchen in the corner. The food was of course the star. It was truly exceptional, as expected. The suckling pig was probably my favorite dish but the tenderloin was also a highlight. Everything was great from start to finish. Highly recommend and will absolutely go back next time in Lisbon!

In fact, though I've nearly explored Lisbon to my heart's content, I would consider returning just to dine here again. For this visit, we opted for the à la carte menu and added the bread service and Chef's Surprises (€15)--an absolute must. The bread was accompanied by a uniquely nutty olive oil (so good I hunted it down at the market to bring home) and a deeply smoked butter that was truly out of this world. I won't spoil the "moments" and Chef's surprises that were sprinkled throughout the meal but they added an element of delight and anticipation throughout the night, with each one memorable and mouthwatering in their own special way. Alma's cocktail menu is uniquely rooted in Portuguese ingredients, but what impressed me even more was their thoughtful mocktail selection, a rarity at this level of dining. I got the Soul (elderflower, lemon, cucumber and egg white) a delightfully refreshing treat that I hope to one day recreate at home, while my boyfriend got the Tamashi, a cocktail made with Amêndoa Amarga Ámen (a local almond liqueur) and Angostura bitters--a lovely, marzipan-meets-citrus drink that gave us the chance to sample local spirits. On to the entrees... since we were dining a la carte, we chose an item each from their chef's classics menu and the seafood (Costa a Costa) menu. FOIE GRAS: seared and served with grilled apple, beetroot and granola... as well as an aromatic bitter coffee foam that cut through the unctuousness of the intensely rich and buttery foie gras to add a roasted, nutty, almost smokey flavor-- just wow. the textural contrast of all these elements made this a truly mind blowing and innovative concoction~ BLUE LOBSTER: poached to buttery smooth perfection, this was a more quietly elegant dish served with roasted leek and corn in a creamy nutty almond emulsion with bright orangey citrusy notes... a gentle symphony of well-balanced flavors Because I simply could not bear to have the meal come to an end, we had to finish off with dessert. The Bola de Berlim was essentially the Portuguese version of the German Berliner, fluffy doughnut holes filled with decadent egg custard (instead of jam) accented with a fragrant calamansi sorbet... a divine and elevated take on this classic Portuguese beach treat. While we only ordered drinks, two entrees and a dessert, our meal ended up being so much more due to the anticipation of the surprises and moments, which were all nothing short of amazing and turned the evening into an immersive journey. If you have one meal to splurge on during your time in Portugal, this is THE ONE. As alluded to earlier, Alma offers two tasting menus--one inspired by the Chef's classics, and the other centered around fish and shellfish (Costa a Costa). Dreaming of the chance to revisit and try the latter (or both?!) one day :')

I stumbled upon…read morePica Pau while meandering back to my hotel after realizing that the restaurant I was originally planning to eat lunch at was closed on Thursdays. It was getting a wee bit late for lunch (~1:30 PM), and I was quite hungry, so when I passed by Pica Pau and saw how packed it was, I knew I had to drop by to give it a try. It's absolutely bustling inside; there are several tables inside and outside, and you can generally just seat yourself as long as there's an open slot. There are very few tourists here -- another great sign -- so the menus will all be in Portuguese, and it will be hit or miss as to whether your server can translate for you. However, the menu is pretty simple, so it's easy enough to intuit what they say (or to just use Google Translate) -- the menu is spread across three blackboards, one for daily specials, another for seafood, and the last for other meat dishes. Everything is just twelve euros for lunch, and it also comes with a drink and bread. You genuinely can't go wrong with anything on their menu. My mom and I both ordered from their seafood menu, and the fish is super fresh and grilled to perfection. It has a perfect char on the outside, and is super flaky and tender on the inside; they add a hit of salt and a side of lemon, but the fish honestly doesn't need much else. The fish also comes with a side of boiled veggies and potatoes, which are a great, neutral accompaniment to the fish. I ordered the swordfish, and my mom got the sea bass, but we ended up splitting both of the dishes between us (especially since they both conveniently came with two pieces). Both were phenomenal, but I did enjoy the swordfish a tiny bit more; it was a bit more tender, and they also descaled the swordfish but did not for the seabass, so it was a slightly easier eating experience.
