Quality is the same but dare I say even better than the chula vista location! We ordered the following: -fish tacos (must order) -shrimp quesdilla (must order) -aguachile rojo (must order) -quesabirria taco I love that they don't overcompensate with batter when it comes to their fish tacos. You can actually taste the fish and everything about it is SO flavorful! Their shrimp quesadilla was also a surprise banger! Incredibly tasty and can last as 4 meals between 2 people, the portion is HUGE! Not too salty at all but so addictive. Lastly, their aguachile is a must! Driving down University Ave it's honestly hard to miss Mariscos El Prieto. You'll see the flags and the food truck right away, that's what caught my attention. I wasn't even planning on getting mariscos that day but it felt like a sign so I took it as a little treat. It's a food truck setup with folding tables and chairs and a pretty big parking lot since the plaza itself is kind of dead. Parking was easy and there was plenty of space. I walked up and they were doing construction on the tent right above where you order and it was really loud. I feel like that could've been done during closing because it disrupted the vibe. The area is already a little rough so it just made things feel a bit off. The lady working was super sweet. She took my order, you pay right after and they do accept tap to pay which I love because I don't carry cash. They take your name and call you when it's ready. I got mine to go, waited about 10 minutes, and everything came out pretty quick. They packaged everything really well too which I appreciated because aguachile can easily spill. For the tostada they gave two packs of saltines and three tostadas which felt like a good portion. They also had fresh salsas at the truck but I skipped them since my taco already came with sauce. I ordered a fish taco and an aguachile verde tostada. I went home excited to try everything but honestly it didn't really hit for me. The fish taco was a good size with a lot of cabbage and a white sauce, but the fish was a little too soft. I wish it had more crisp and overall the flavors just weren't memorable. It's about $3.70 so fair, just nothing standout. The aguachile verde was the weakest part. Some shrimp textures were off and a few had a strange aftertaste. I've had a lot of aguachile recently and this was probably the lowest quality. I will say they were generous with the avocado and the sauce itself had a nice spicy kick, it just didn't come together overall. There was also an earthy note from the seeds that was very prominent which I have never experienced in aguach For the price, I paid around $20 with tip for both which isn't bad for the portions. Hands down the best fish tacos ever. I grew up on these and they're still my favorite to this day. I've been going to both the Chula Vista location and the University one, and the quality is always consistent. If I'm craving tacos, this is the only place I'm going. No debate. First time trying this location and it's on par with the truck in Chula Vista. The shrimp taco a la diabla came with an extra tortilla and was enough to make two hefty tacos. I love the combo of melty cheese, onions and spicy sauce. The fish taco was airy and crisp. Carne asada was so so but they're a seafood truck so I expected that. There are limes, onions, radishes, crema and what looked to be a chipotle sauce available for self-service, as well as hot sauces of varying heat levels on the tables. Since I moved to the area I've been driving past El Valedor Seafood and the big flag out front with the words "BIRRIA" waving in the wind was all I needed to bookmark the place. Sure it took a few months, but an early Sunday morning grocery run was rounded out with a stop at El Valedor and few of those birria tacos landing in the front seat of my car to be devoured in the comfort of my home. I love birria. My trips to Tijuana always include birria and I'm so happy to see that the craze has made it's way up north. What was once much more difficult to find in San Diego is now significantly more simple. This truck, though one of many serving one of my faves is holding their own with a hearth version clocking in at $3.75 each. Okay, those aren't Tj prices but these tacos also aren't Tj size either. They're piled high with meat and double wrapped in mid-sized corn tortillas. My order of three had me full after two tacos so I had the leftover one for breakfast - it heated up pretty well. Not as great as when served fresh but still pretty damn good. There's tons on the menu here and I always love a $2.00 fish taco served from a truck. Food may be good but they consistently allow a bunch of people to camp and bathe right behind their kitchen/truck using their water hoses, etc. I just can't combine that image with a seafood meal and decide to eat there. I'm not super finicky, but that's way too much. They need to take (even the perception of) sanitation seriously and not allow that to continue on their watch. read more

This food truck has the BEST fish tacos ever!!! It has set the bar for me because now whenever I have other fish tacos, I get disappointed because its not as good as El Valedor's. Definitely order the fish tacos! They are crispy fried fresh and are super hot when you get them. The sauces are a perfect creamy compliment, and they improve with lime and creamy chipotle sauce or any other hot sauce they have on the side. I always get full off of 3 tacos. I also love the seafood consume they give you for free (beware its SUPER hot when they give it to you, but its a perfect starter and I love that they give it to you for free!!!) We've been coming to El Velador for over a year, and I believe they recently changed ownership to El Prieto. Sadly, it's not the same. Not only did they increase their prices, but the quality is disappointing. It's only been a week or two since we last went, and we noticed the difference right away. They forgot to add limes, we had to ask for saladitas, and the cebollitas (escabeche) is awful. Lastly, they no longer serve Agua Fresca. This is not a bad Mexican Seafood Truck. I had a couple griddle fish tacos or "a la plancha" as they would say. I can't remember the price but I want to say about $2.50 a piece, perhaps a bit more. Definitely more than the fried variety. The tacos were very well made and the fish was very tender and well seasoned, but it was definitely a bottom dweller given it gave off a muddy flavor. It's to bad too because if it were not for that, these tacos would of been fantastic. Also, I found it odd that they appropriately wrapped one of the tacos with to warm corn tortillas, of very good quality by the way, and one with only one. A little inconsistent I would think eh? New ownership. It all makes sense now. Eaten here many times in the past approx 15. Approx 6 months ago i had my favorite tostada locita. A couple days later a was sick. I could not pinpoint it on this place so i let it slide. Just didnt go back until 10 days ago. Ordered the same thing and bam. 24 hrs later it kicked in. Lasted an entire week. Have been coming here for a few years and been loving the fish tacos. The older gentlemen that was working the truck was always friendly and made them so perfect. Then two girls started to work the truck and the tacos were ok. But today, a different gentleman was cooking and my 3 fish tacos that normally take some time to make, were packed up and given to me in just a couple of minutes. When I came home to eat them they were Sub-par quality. Totally over-fried to the point of the outside being dark brown and almost black and the fish on the inside were dried up and there was almost just a hollow space.
